ouf!! I'm stuffed... good rant there, Ralf

Although I believe Black Friday actually refers to the fact that, being the biggest shopping day of the year, it puts the year-end profit margins into the black; that is, profits-a-plenty.

Living Room / Re: How To Ask Questions The Smart Way
« Last post by Edvard on November 20, 2007, 02:18 PM »
Y'know it's not the question that is stupid, it's the way it's asked is not likely to get a good answer.
Let's rephrase the theoretical poster:
Subject:New Gignaplextor card troubles - Need suggestions.
Message:Hi all, I bought a new Gignaplextor Supervidium 2.0 GTIIIx ver. 2.5a from Good Deals yesterday.
I installed the card and drivers (with the included driver disk) I rebooted to a black screen and hung system.
I re-installed my old video card (so I could have a working system to do troubleshooting) and hit Google. A post on another forum suggested downloading the new drivers from the manufacturers website, I did so and the same result. There are no posts relating to this card behaving badly with my old motherboard (a PXD Technor 7J with integrated flux capacitance) but I've had problems with video memory not being recognized before. A driver update and a BIOS setting fixed it, but I wonder if anyone else has had problems with this card.
BTW- I am running DoorsOS YQ Service pack e9th54 on a 3.11432GHz box with 4G RAM
Now, isn't that better? A few minutes spent putting some details on your post and I bet you'll get more help than you can shake a Gig-stick at...

Concerning Mr. "CANZ U TEECH ME 2 H@CK? I WANNA B A 1337 H@X0R!" you could even re-phrase that and end up learning more than you want to know:
Subject: Need hacking help, really it's for a good cause...
Message: Hey guys, I think my uncle is surfing kiddie porn and I want to stop him. The only way is to find evidence on his box, and he never lets his laptop out of his sight, so I'm going to have to hack in. The only lead I have is an ip I ripped from when he IM'd me a week ago. I have nmap and a few other tools, can anybody give me advice on how to crack this jerk? PM me or let's get together on IRC.

Bill's Windows Swill
That Bill-I-Will! That Bill-I-Will! I do not like that Bill-I-Will!
"Do you like my Windows Swill?"

I do not like it Bill-I-Will. I do not like your Windows Swill.

"Would you like it here or there?"

I would not like it here or there. I would not like it anywhere. I do not like your Windows Swill. I do not like it Bill-I-Will.

"In the computer in your house? Would you select it with your mouse?"

I do not want it in my house, will not select it with my mouse. I do not like it here or there. I do not like it anywhere. I do not like your Windows Swill. I do not like it Bill-I-Will.

"Would you use it with a CISC? Would you use it in your RISC?"

Not with a CISC. Not with my RISC. Not in my house. Not with my mouse. I would not use it here or there. I would not use it anywhere. I would not use your Windows Swill. I do not like it Bill-I-Will.

"With a cable modem through a LAN? Use it ! Use it! Use more RAM! You may likeit . You will see. Try it in a new P III!"

Not with your modem or a LAN, DSL or more RAM! Not with a CISC, not with my RISC, not in my house, not with my mouse! No AMD or new P III, Bill-I-Will, YOU LET ME BE!!

"You do not like it, so you say. Try it! Try it! And you may! Try it and you may, I say!"

BILL!! If you will let me be, I will try it. You will see.

(Clickity-clickity-clic*...BOING! FREEZE! CRASH!!)

Say! HEY! I LOATHE that Windows Swill! I do! I loathe it Bill! I knew! I KNEW!
PLease remove it from my house, disconnect it from my mouse.
Keep it and your cheesy CISC, keep it and you leave my RISC.
Please pack up your new P III, return to your MONOPOLY.
Leave me with my stable Mac, close the door and don't come back.

Keep your modem and your LAN,
Your DSL, and more RAM.
Take your software and you SCRAM!!

I will not use code full of SPAM.
I'd sooner eat Green Eggs and Ham!

Note: no Linux was harmed in the creation of this parody.

IIRC, the reason this guide was written was not to trash Newbs, but to promote the 'help you help yourself' mentality. Regardless of your intelligence or experience, it really is UNhelpful to both parties to post something like:
Subject: I NEED HELP NOW!1!
Message: Dude, WTF i instlled a brand new Gignaplextor Supervidium 2.0 GTIIIx ver. 2.5a and now i get a black scrn!!11! please reply instrctions. I need thes to wrk now!1!!
Now, this theoretical-but-not-uncommon person is obviously in distress, needs help and needs it very soon, but this kind of post is NOT going to get helpful folks on your side, I don't care what their view of your relative humanity.

I briefly attended a few local Mycologist Club meetings and they mentioned that they pulled in more cash at their last annual Wild Mushroom show after going from a $2.00 admission to a "donate to the club" admission.
Several times when I've gone to a restaurant with a large group of people, we were hit with a 15% gratuity. None of us ever had a problem with it, but discussing it later, we concluded they would have made almost twice that if we had all tipped individually.
Go figure....

And I figured that #36 was a third-party confirmation that the "donate what you deem appropriate" scheme is a solid one.

Fish bones FTW!!

Living Room / Pac-Man + Zork =
« Last post by Edvard on November 09, 2007, 05:44 PM »
Wth?! Why would anyone invest the time and effort to build such a useless game?
Well, I had just got back from a party where the concept of a Pac-Man + Zork hybrid came up as a joke. So, being 2am with a little alcohol in my system, I thought it'd be funny to code it up (as far as I could before collapsing). So, a couple hours later it was looking complete-ish (minus the ghosts' AIs and graphic assets). The next morning [read: aftenoon] when I woke up, since I have an inability to realize sunk costs, I decided to throw some crappy AI in for the ghosts, put a few graphics on it (courtesy of FastIcon.com) and voila! A domain name purchase or two later, and here we go.

General Software Discussion / Re: split PDF files - context menu program?
« Last post by Edvard on November 07, 2007, 12:16 PM »
Here's an AutoHotkey script I have in my "Send To..." folder.
It uses PDFTK and you'll have to change the program file paths, but here it is...
file = %1%
filesel = %1%
If file =
{
FileSelectFile,filesel,3,,Select a PDF to Burst,PDF Documents (*.pdf)
file = %filesel%
}
If filesel =
{
MsgBox,0,Pdftk Burst,No files selected
ExitApp
}
SplitPath,file,,filepath,,name,
newdir = %filepath%\%name%
FileCreateDir,%newdir%
Loop,%file%
    sh_file = %A_LoopFileShortPath%
SplashTextOn,400,75,Pdftk Burst,Now bursting %file%
WinSet,Enable,,Pdftk Burst
WinActivate,Pdftk Burst
RunWait,E:\Program Files\pdftk\pdftk.exe %sh_file% burst,%newdir%,hide
Sleep,200
SplashTextOff
FileDelete,%newdir%\doc_data.txt
MsgBox,64,Pdftk Burst,PDF Burst Operation Complete
ExitApp

;To Do---
;
;select output directory

I would recommend compiling to .exe and using the standard "Open With..." tool to select it.
What it does is create a folder in the same directory as the pdf file you are bursting, and fills it with the pages from your pdf.
Hope this helps!

hmm... Google OS is Ubuntu based.
So it's not really a New operating system, just Google schmarm slathered on top of the current touted-as-easy-to-use Linux distro.
So what's the difference?
The Name.
If anybody named Joe Schmoe is going to trust a Linux distro AT ALL it'd better have a major brand name on it. Microsoft, Google, Adobe, you get the idea. I bet average folks would even take a second look at Sun's offering if they called it JavaOS and shilled it through Wal-Mart.

Holy carp! Nice detective work, Edvard.

YOU SEEE!?!?! I just do a little googling, and I'm already in over my head.
Yes, I will probably be watching for November 26 just because it is intriguing, even if I probably won't get involved.
Y'know these things resemble a real-life, real-time Samorost game.

I suppose a longer-running game would offer more opportunity for action, but you also run the danger of stagnation.
Like in high school when a D&D campaign that ran WAY too long, we started losing players pretty quick.
Given a ticking clock and the allure of an exciting end-game would keep folks interested, as well as allowing room for new games to start up, and new players opportunity to get in early.

After reading a bit, it seems to me that if Red-Monday is an ARG, it's playing out like this is the pre-game heat, which will set the stage for the actual game, which is set to start Nov. 26.
A very novel twist, I'd say.

Here's an even better write-up of what it's all about, written by a former PuppetMaster.
