Here's another downloader you might like to try

Thanks, I'll take a look.  The odd thing is it doesn't seem to have a home page as such.  Your link goes direct to the file, and truncating the end of the URL just gets forbidden pages?

A bonus is it will read from a file of URLs.

wget --input-file=<file>

Only thing is I believe you'll need to input the proxy manually - could be a problem if you don't know the authentication.

I don't.  I suspect that's why I can't get Web Downloader to work.  It lets you enter the proxy, but there's a separate field for authentication.  Yet, programs which auto-detect proxies by using Microsoft Internet Explorer do work; applause for Firefox, K-Meleon, Great News, WebSite-Watcher and Local Website Archive.  Oh, and Free Download Manager, but I'd rather avoid it; it spreads a load of stuff throughout the Registry and it's rather too "busy" a program.

Hmm i fell for the blurb that it did support proxies, somewhere in the config files.

Configuration does have settings for proxies.  It's likely that either it doesn't like proxy.pac files, or, more likely, that it needs authentication - and at work, I don't know the settings for that.  Programs that auto-detect the proxy settings used by Internet Explorer work perfectly well.

wget is always a good choice

I struggle with GNU-speak manuals  :(  and may still have the same problem with permissions.

Thanks, folks...  It didn't occur to me that portability and scheduled operation aren't really compatible, but I see what you mean.  I think I should drop "portable" in favour of "no-install," i.e., not needing full admin rights on the computer (tinjaw, you hit the nail on the head).  That still leaves me feeling uneasy at FDM, for example, which in "portable" mode still writes to the host computer's Registry.  It clears up when it exits, but that won't happen in a crash, and also apparently doesn't remember all its settings when used in portable mode.  There's a message in their forums about this, without any replies.

I'm not so bothered about browser integration as I expect to compile lists of URLs manually.  There are utilities like tranglos' VISIT, for example, which capture URLs from the clipboard (I haven't tried this one yet).  I assume most host computers will already have schedulers built-in.  I normally use the one in PowerPro, but could use something else if necessary.

@iphigenie:
i find this http://www.webxpace....et/software/#Downldr - i havent tried it much and most of it is controlled via a text config, but it seems to be an "unpack and run straight" type of tool

That looks nice, small and truly portable.  Apparently the author listens to his "customers," too.  However, it doesn't understand proxy.pac files, nor is there any provision I can see for scheduling.  Star Downloader is another one that expects you to have fixed proxy details, which rules it out for me.  Much kudos to Martin Aignesberger for WebSite-Watcher and Local Website Archive, also to Firefox, K-Meleon and Great News, all of which can be set to use whatever proxy stuff IE is using.

@4wd:
I was scared of wget on the grounds I probably wouldn't understand GNUishness   :-[  I suppose I'll have not choice but to check it out!  Thanks for the link, especially for the GUI shells.

General Software Discussion / Simple download manager?

I thought of adding to an earlier thread, but SMF pointed out it was over 120 days old and would I like to start a new one...

I'm interested in a "simple download manager," in that all I really want to do is schedule downloads for slack times.  However, I ideally want it to meet these requirements:

  • Run on Win98
  • Can use a proxy.pac file, or read whatever proxy Internet Explorer is using (is that wininet technology?)
  • Portable, avoiding he Registry and using relative paths
  • Either built-in scheduler, or, easy control from external scheduler
  • Can be used in a commercial environment

I haven't yet seen anything that matches all those; even FDM isn't really portable.  Does anyone have any suggestions, please?

Thanks in advance...

General Software Discussion / PDF to DOC converter?
« Last post by rjbull on February 01, 2008, 04:26 AM »
I just hit a PDF I needed to extract details from.  PDFtoText (from the XPDF suite) gave a text file containing two page feeds; Acrobat Reader gave a zero-byte text file.  That bodes ill for any other software on that particular file, but it made me wonder again about finding something else that converts PDFs to a more amenable format.  Various PDF-to-Word DOC and other format converters exist; please, does anyone have any experience or recommendations?

Thanks in advance...

I mean usually I think to remember a password just after i entered it as mentally I remember the details when I see the website (visually). So I've just logged in and then want to save the passwords to the manager.

I think I see what you mean...  I've got into the habit of, whenever I first sign up, setting up the loginID in KeePass then and there, so I don't have to remember anything afterwards (except to back up the KeePass database).

What I disliked about Keepass and all other password managers is that you login to a website and then have to type in the login again in the password manager to save it.

Not sure I know what you mean there.  If I'm setting up a new loginID, I open KeePass and set the password there, then I'm OK?

Also the hassle of having to open the password manager, find the password and then copy/paste it or drag/drop it in the form is really tiresome.

Check out this bit of KeePass's Help:

Auto-Type: Powerful feature that sends keypresses to other applications.
Invoking Auto-Type
Global Auto-Type Hot Key
Auto-Type Keystroke Sequences
Target Window Filters

It means that if you have the window title correctly set in KeePass, you can put the cursor on the first box in your browser and press the global hotkey.  KeePass pops up, asks for its master password; when that's entered, it fills in the data automatically without you needing to search for the entry.

So, instead of being locked downd to 1 computer with the software on it,

(Windows & IE only)

But you're still locked down to one browser.  Come on, support Firefox at least!

Edit:  Afterthought.  Couldn't you make a Firefox extension, like Roboform and EverNote do?

Most recently, I have been using Antispam Sniper (http://www.antispamsniper.com/).

KenR,

I use TheBat! too, but on Win98.  I don't think AntiSpamSniper works on Win9x?  At least they don't mention it on the site, only WinNT onwards.

Are you using the free version or the payware one?

What are people using to stop spam?  I'm currently using Mailwasher, but not all that happy with it; insufficiently keyboard-friendly, downloads the entire contents of my mailbox every time - I leave quite a lot on the server  - and now seems to have decided to delete mail it thinks is old, even though I haven't told it to.  Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but I can't immediately see ways of changing these settings.  I do like the idea, though, of deleting spam from the server, and never having it in the e-mail client.

Any other suggestions, please?

Thanks in anticipation...

Trick about passphrases is that you need to be able to memorize them, though, otherwise you end up writing them down on a piece of paper or whatever :)

do you have any recommendations for the password?

Not the answer to the question, but allied; you could use KeePass to generate passwords.   Or, look at Johannes Wallroth's Password Generator

A useful tool for creating passwords that nobody can guess. Use a mixture of upper/lowercase letters, numbers and a selection of user defined special characters. Generate up to 1000 passwords at a time and save them to a file.

I'm still trying to decide between it and KeyNote; they both do very similar things.  I tried Stickies for a while, but it was faintly annoying, though I don't remember why now.

@Mandork: You might want to take another look at Stickies as a new version was released just last week.

@Hefty Hippie: if you want really simple, you might try PasteBoard.  But it's difficult to get really simple and an adequate feature set.

MailWasher Pro version 6.0 has been released. And as promised, this is a completely
free upgrade.

We recommend you upgrade to this version as soon as possible to take
advantage of the new features. Also see below about the 2-for-1 deal
on MailWasher Pro this week only.

New Features
============

Easier to use
-------------
Many of you didn't know how to train MailWasher to block spam, so this has
been made easier with the Action column. The Action column lets you specify
whether an email is 'GOOD' or 'SPAM' and from this, MailWasher will quickly
and automatically learn which of your email is spam and which is good,
saving you time.
All the settings for options, email accounts and spam tools are now able to
be changed in one area. All accessible via the 'Settings' button on the front
of MailWasher.
Additionally, there are many small tweaks to improve your experience of using
MailWasher Pro.

Recycle bin
-----------
Many of you never knew you could rescue accidentally deleted email. So a
button called the 'Recycle Bin' has been placed on the front of MailWasher
and this allows you to restore any email you have lost.

A new look
----------
MailWasher is now a bit brighter and shinier. It was looking a bit scruffy,
so hopefully you like the subtle changes.

Vista Compatible
----------------
Yes, this version is fully compatible with Windows Vista. Finally.

Updated spam algorithms
-----------------------
We've updated the spam algorithms so you should see a big difference in the
spam catching ability of MailWasher if you're using FirstAlert.

2-for-1 deal (This week only!)
------------------------------
If you buy MailWasher Pro this week, you'll get an additional copy for free.
Visit http://firetrust.com...her-pro/promo/HJY945
to get this special offer.
Of course, feel free to pass this special offer on to your friends.

General Software Discussion / Stickies 6.5a released
« Last post by rjbull on January 17, 2008, 04:48 AM »
Zhorn Software have released a new (to me) version of many people's favourite sticky notes application: Stickies 6.5a

v6.5a
What's new since version 6.0c

New features

    * API to allow integration with other applications
    * Skin language v4 supported (scrollbars, alpha drawing, suggested default style)
    * Typing [ followed by ] gives you a checkbox which can be double-clicked to alter its state
    * Several buttons will repeat if the mouse button is held down (scroll up, scroll down, page up, page down, dimension conditions)
    * A new GPO setting to log all network stickies to the server, for administrative monitoring
    * Wildcards are now available for use with window classes when attaching
    * Alt-space brings up the text context menu
    * Advanced AttachShowSystemWindows=1 ini file setting to control whether additional windows are shown in the attach dialog
    * Advanced AllowTransparentBackgrounds=1 ini file setting to control whether stickies colour can be set to the region colour

Fixes

    * Some context-sensitive help was not opening correctly on the General options tab
    * Attaching using a wildcard was not working correctly
    * Storing an empty sticky no longer generates an error
    * Warning about using a skin with regions is now displayed correctly pre-Windows 2000
    * Stickies set to Autowidth near the right of the screen will now load back in their correct positions
    * Context-sensitive help is now set correctly for the Change Title dialog, after other similar dialogs have been displayed
    * Autowidth stickies now size the correct side as they're loaded
    * Skin button action "attach" now works
    * Tooltips are only created for buttons which have a conditional display when that condition is met
    * Attached stickies can now be rolled up
    * Sleeping for values larger than 99 would only sleep for 99 of that amount
    * MAPI usage under Vista will no longer crash Stickies
    * Double-clicking words inbetween two <<file://>> elements now works
    * Crash caused by restoring a closed sticky when it's only just been modified fixed
    * Crash when "Bring all stickies to front when one is clicked" is off, "Confirm closure" is on, and user clicks delete multiple times fixed
    * Searching for terms in the Manage dialog which contain [ or ] no longer causes a problem
    * Chinese IME drop menu "Candidate words" no longer closed mid-selection
    * Copying a stored sticky within categories now copies the text of the sticky as well
    * Starting a drag and drop in Manage, moving over the categories, and then not dropping onto a category no longer causes the category list selection to get "stuck"
    * Crash when opening a context-menu search term from the Manage dialog fixed
    * Pasting non-Western characters, and text from Office 2007 into a sticky works better
    * Sizing the sticky by the bottom-right corner will no longer snap to a zero width or height
    * Sizing the sticky by the bottom-left corner will no longer "disappear" the sticky when snapping is disabled

Changes

    * Stickies brought back from store have a create date of when they were restored, not Jan 1970
    * Tab order on the Sleep/Alarm dialog improved
    * Blank stickies which have a title are now closed rather than deleted
    * Single-clicking the task-tray icon while the Manage dialog is showing search results is much faster
    * Context-sensitive help tooltips now use 8pt Tahoma, so non-Western characters can be displayed
    * Improved handling of URL launching when a <<file://name with a space.dat>> is present on a sticky
    * Exporting categories in the Manage dialog currently does so as plain text, not as RTF
    * "Green" on the Font menu is now green rather than lime
    * Font colour menu items text is now set to that colour
    * Styles and Skin dialog skin preview improved - no more odd colours around it
    * "Recurring" icon altered in Manage dialog to be less similar to the "Sleeping" icon
    * The code which puts a sticky on the screen rewritten from scratch
    * The "Double-clicking the title bar:" option now does only what it says, and doesn't also prevent skins from rolling

On Software Design by Gregory Braun Website Password Keeper is priced at $19.95.

PhilB66,

Gregory Braun used to offer earlier versions of some of his programs for free, but it looks like he doesn't any more.  Maybe that's how oldfart came by a free version.

2370
I can't remember this one being mentioned yet (apologies if it has been): Fast File Renamer

Fast File Renamer: Rename multiple files at the click of a button!

Current version: 1.0,  February 05, 2007

Fast File Renamer is a freeware program which can help you with the tedious task of renaming large numbers of files. The program can be used by anyone who needs to keep large collections of files organized (such as mp3 files, image and graphics files, web-site-related files, system files).

Fast File Renamer also has a 'simulate' function where you can preview the effects of any changes before applying them and it supports the use of the '*' wildcard character (inside the pattern which is to be deleted or replaced).

Looks simpler than most folk here will want, but then, if you have a simple task, this may be easier to use.

2371
I should have added: Notesholder has a feature whereby you can minimise it to a narrow vertical bar on the right edge of the screen.  It pops up whenever you "bump" the bar with the cursor.  I've only seen this before in PowerPro, but a mouse person might like it.  Sorry I can't remember whether it's in the freeware Notesholder Lite as well - worth checking - but it's certainly in the registered version.

Some people here have mentioned Flashnote as a small fast note-taking app, but I haven't tried it, and it may not have global search which I would consider imperative.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Locate32 used for Local Dictionary search
« Last post by rjbull on January 14, 2008, 05:00 AM »
czechboy,

Locate32 has a "File containing text:" box on the Advanced tab; you'd probably have to tweak the macros in FARR to make use of it.  Otherwise, take a look at WanyWord and BareGrep and BareGrep Pro, which might be more appropriate tools.

2373
Mainly for simplicity and ease of use by someone who's more of a mouse person than a keyboard person.

Hmmm, I'm more the opposite!

CHS included) but she didn't like them at all and reverted to sticking paper notes up all over the place.

Pity, CHS has good organising abilities for a clipboard extender.  However, a few more possibilities.  Are you aware that you can set up KeyNote as a clipboard extender?  Then you have good organisational possibilities as well.  That might be the first thing to try as appearing to tick all the boxes, and freeware to boot. Don't forget the author posts here as tranglos!

JBLab Secure Notes is another small notekeeper with some nice features.  It doesn't automatically keep clips, but has a "smart paste" feature that helps make sensible titles for nodes when you paste from the clipboard into it.  Be aware, though, that the program hasn't been updated since May 2005.

There are plenty of other choices for notes, but most aren't automatic clipboard extenders.  E.g., Horst Schaeffer's MemPad, where you can set a hotkey as a toggle to minimise to tray/restore.  Bayden Systems' SlickRun is a program launcher that has a mini-notekeeper built in.  Notesholder is like a continuous ribbon of paper holding your notes; the free version is good, and the shareware one naturally has more features.  But if your wife likes sticky notes, how about the computer equivalent, of which a myriad exist?  I use Magic Notes (shareware), but ZhornSoftware's Stickies is a very well-liked free one.  DC currently has a members' discount on NoteZilla.

2374
Why the particular desire for the context menu for general notes?  Would a hotkey to pop up a notekeeping program be adequate?

This from an ancient post by mouser:

Big Religion Chart

The ReligionFacts Big Religion Chart is an attempt to summarize all the complexities of religions and belief systems into tiny little boxes on a single, quick-reference comparison chart.  Yes, this is impossible. As we always warn with our comparison charts, this is no substitute for reading about religions in greater detail, talking with religious adherents, etc. But this religon comparison chart can (hopefully) be a useful and accessible way to "get the gist" of some unfamiliar groups and compare basic beliefs and practices of the world's religions and belief systems.

Does nothing like all you want, but an interesting quick summary.
