OK. I just realised that MS Word encryption got better over the years.  :-[

Anybody here knows if the (native) advanced security options in MS Word (which allows to choose AES and RSA encryption) are any good?

[A few months later]

OK. Definitive end of AxCrypt.  I lost some valuable data after MS Word crashed. Axcrypt wiped the files before it was recovered by word, and so...

are solutions like truecrypt or folder lock "crash proof" (for example : would a crash in MS Word make the file unrecoverable if encrypted with one of these encryption tool, or would the encryption have absolutely no effect on the file recovery?)

Thanks for any advice...

At one point I tried to fight the silly ms naming convention, but more recently, I decided to go with it for consistency (rather than fight it) and it has made my life easier.  Accept the convention and things get less painful.

Same conclusions...

I had a tree structure like this but you end up spending more times shuffling files than working - and a lot of things could fit in more than one category so in the end you are never sure where to look for things.

So I went to a much flatter set up and better search.

Same conclusions too!
This is why I've decided to put all my energies in filenaming instead.

the only problem with it if what Armando is saying is true (storing snapshots on the OS drive)...

I double checked :

Non-system partitions/removable media can not be used to store snapshots

Which is understandable.

FirstDefense is probably the ideal solution if you have a huge hard drive. My laptop is too small for it.  :)

There is also RollBack Rx. But I've read bad things about version 7. I don,t know about the newest version. For someone who just needs a way to rollback after some software testing, RollBack Rx seems like the best solution though. Of course, it needs to PERFECTLY reliable. Otherwise, what would be the point?

After having tried many info dump programs, my favorite is InfoSelect 2007.

They also have again (after a many years hiatus) a 30 day trial version.

www.miclog.com

Pricey but in my opinion the best!

Greetings,

Brahman

A weird old friend of mine ( :) ) uses info select. I tried it almost for a whole week and I liked it. I don't remember what version it was though... 7, maybe???

But... I found it expensive, and not worth the move. Some quick comments on what seemed like drawbacks to me (at the time, I was looking for an "all in one" Outlook and Notetaking solution):

- Sync with palm : seemed more complicated and less reliable than my current Outlook to palm solution

- GTD implementation : not that easy to implement an easy to manage GTD system

- Calendar : compared to Outlook, the calendar is not as nice and feature full

- Drag and drop : not as intuitive and well implemented

- Pretty heavy on RAM if you have big databases

- Not great with images and graphics (I don't even know if you can store images in its data base... maybe you actlually can with the newer version...

- "Abstract" : there's a level of abstractedness to it that made me feel like every thing (my data) was... floating. OUtlook makes me feel like every bit of data has a specific and well defined spot...

BUT...

- InfoSelect's searching capabilities are AMAZING : quick, fluid, and I loved how ot graphically represented your data and search results. You have to see it to understand...  :-[

- Very very flexible : you can classify and organize your data in many many different ways... In some ways, I found it almost too flexible (hence, its "abstractedness"....)

- I loved its outlining features. "Wow" is all I could say.

The "notetaking" thread has some info on Info Select. Not much though. It was "rejected" pretty early in the epuration process.

PS. I don't think one can really compare ONeNote to Info Select : they are really two different beast. (edit : actually, why not... ...)Info Select is very much a PIM and email program (some will say it enters the EITKS category...) program. OneNote is not exactly what you'd call a fullblown PIM... Well, I wouldn't. Even if Zaine files it under the Calendar, PIM and Outlining section...
2359
Interesting... Similie looks nice.

I wonder if there would be some add-ons for Outlook for a kind of "lifelong timeline"...??? Something that would use the Outlooks "journal" capabilities or something like that... I might do a little search tomorrow...

The reason I'm referring to Outlook is that it seems like it would be useful to have such a timeline integrated to one's calendar, task manager, etc. Just a gut feeling. :)

Hey!!! thanks so much, Tom.  :-*
It's already late here, but I'll have a look at CbC right away. Sounds like a greeeaaaat add-in.
It could actually be part of the solution to one of my big summer problem -- see the thread Working with (display+format+restructure) big amount of data (text+graphics)?

This is not to dismiss ravenlaughs' post, really, but... I find that screenshot captor is a great program.
I don't see bloat but flexibility and VERY useful (and easy to use) features...
I wonder : where is the bloat exactly?
Its memory footprint is also quite small...
It's stable...
It works well...  :tellme:

Thanks Jim! That's kind. I might have more time too in a few weeks -- maybe, maybe... hard to predict these days! -- so I should be able focus more on that "problem". Hopefully.

(If only I knew how to code!!!  :stars: )

Some time ago i noticed that the more "cleaning/repairing" programs i ran, the less stable my windows OS became.
So now i never run any registry cleaners, disk check repairers, etc.

I think the reason is this:
Inside every computer that has Windows OS installed, is a tiny little miniature bill gates.  And when you run these types of programs you make it very angry and it throws a fit and starts trashing things.  That's just my theory,

;D

Another option;
run weekly backups with FirstDefense-ISR on your OS partition.
Faster, easier than acronis.
Run an incremental backup (superflexible is my fave) on your data partition.

That's what I do. I think it's pretty secure. I have a clean install of XP as a base image in FD-ISR. If things go really bad, I boot to that one. There's a long thread about how to use FD-ISR in security forums.

My strategy:
A base snapshot (windows, + drivers + barebones utils)
A working snapshot (the one I boot to everyday). You can afford to screw things up here)
An archive of the working snapshot (that's a 'last known good config'). It'll have all the programs you installed in recent history.

If you install something that craps your computer, I boot to the base snapshot, recover the last archive to the working snapshot, and then boot back to working snapshot. I hope it makes sense.

All in all, I feel pretty protected. I disconnected windows' own history, as this is a lot safer.

You could have as much as 10 archives if you wanted to, but I'm ok with one.

HTH

Nice strategy for quick recovery…
I don't want to hijack this thread, but... urlwolf, I wonder... In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of using Acronis / FirstDefense-ISR ? Can you store your snapshots on an external hard drive?

(I think that that what put me off when I first checked FirstDefense is the fact that the snapshots have to be stored on C: and I didn't have enough space to afford an extra 25 Gb -- and more -- on my C: drive.  But that might be wrong...)

Use Total Uninstall to monitor installations and removing the crap afterwards. You have to learn how things work in Windows before being able to use it correctly, but it's worth the effort. Since I began to use almost three years ago, computers ran as fast as they should. BTW, if you give it a try, monitor only trivial software, like games and apps, forget about drivers and Windows updates, as it could do more harm than benefit.

I've heard good things about Total Uninstall and I think I tried it a couple years ago. Would certainly be pretty handy too...
2365
Buy a big additional /external harddisk + Acronis Trueimage and make weekly images.
Problem with this is that when I find out that there's problems it will be a pain to revert to  an identical installation without problems.

Justice, that's what I've been doing for years and I think it's the best strategy.

It's not that much of a pain if you have a Windows partition separated from your documents. You'll lose maybe... what...  30min. max? And you'll be pretty much sure that your system will be exactly how it was before... And you can do something else while the image is restored... Go for a walk, listen to the birds. Play on you 2nd computer :)

You could combine that with Altiris if you want (I don't -- too much management!). That way, you're sure you won't break anything that's not recoverable!

Although I generally don't image my system every week (because I don't install enough stuff to justify it) -- every 2-3 weeks -- I will image my system every time I feel like testing a bunch of new apps, especially if I've heard that they can potentially be dangerous.

PS. Make sure your images work! I've never had problems with Acronis, but who knows... One potentially useful habit, IMO : never use my 500 Gb backup and Image hard drive for anything else than... backuping and imaging.

General Software Discussion / Re: A "Wiki Word" add-in for MS Word?
« Last post by Armando on August 28, 2007, 07:19 PM »
Hi everybody,

I haven't been able to put much thought and energy into this problem in the last few weeks... Even if it seems to me that a "Wiki Word" functionnality for MS Word would be extremely handy. (And not just for me, of course.  :P )

I read something about a product called "ZuluPad" which sounds similar to what you want. Don't know if it would have an "export" to Word function, etc. but you could contact the author. There's an open source version (according to here: http://www.gersic.com/zulupad/) and a paid version. I don't know anything much about either program.

As far as rewriting the macro...  Word already has internal linking, and the macro is doing text searching (but not efficiently). I thought you could just generate the links.

Actually, probably best to ask on one of Microsofts Word forums.

Thanks. ZuluPad is nice, but what I'm after is the same “wiki word”/cross linking feature BUT available in Word (and between MS word Documents -- of course, in an ideal computer world, it would be available in all applications). (BTW, there's a nice Mini-Review of ZuluPad / ZuluPad Pro by cthorpe here on DC)

I can't imagine that there isnt someone out there who has already made a set of macros to do a "wiki" structure in word.
Finding it is another question.

Yes... and I really wish that somebody would come up and say : "yes, it does exist! here..."

As tabletguy suggested, I guess that I will eventually have to ask about such a feature on a specialized Microsoft Word forum.

And ALSO… to be fair, I should really invest more time into the investigation of some of the suggestions proposed by Jimdoria. The abbreviation "vba" frightens me a bit (as I'm not a programmer...), but I guess that it's never too late to learn new skills...

Find And Run Robot / Re: [feature request] FARR2 as dialog extender?
« Last post by Armando on August 27, 2007, 08:14 PM »
Yes…

But I believe that using a hot key to send whatever results (paths) chosen in farr directly to the active (open/save) window would probably be enough for most operations.

I'm not sure what kind of benefits a GUI integration would add... Maybe more fluidity. It would probably be quite tricky to code.

It's a great idea.
But I really wonder how such a plug-in would work...
What were you imagining? Something like a hot key to send farr's results to the open/save window? Or a real GUI integration?

There's just one flaw in the developer's promo.  He talks about doing this to thank his subscribers -- but those of us who've paid for the software already don't get a thing!  Darn...  I'd settle for half price on his e-book.

;D I see this often - discounts on licensing to thank loyal customers...
[...]
I dunno - I've always shaken my head at this is well.

Yes, I guess it's a bit awkward.

In fact, he's most probably not "thanking" anybody as much as he is trying to convert all the subscribers who haven't bought AP... yet. That's me! In other words, he's really targeting those who are interested but haven't made the move. (Don't get me wrong : Rodger is a nice guy!! But... he's also also a salesman)

In any case, even if the price is very good and the eBook on time management looks interesting, I think I'll just skip this version -- there are some aspects of AP that still need to be improved (IMVHO) to justify using it instead of Outlook 2003. Of course, I'll keep an eye on its development. :)

PS. Tom, you could send a letter to Rodger and ask him if he'd be willing to propose a discount on his eBook for his actual loyal customers...!!

General Software Discussion / Re: Ideamason on special
« Last post by Armando on August 25, 2007, 05:49 PM »
@Grorgy : thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and reactions.

@Darwin and others : you are probably aware of that but there are a lot of different views expressed about IdeaMason at www.outlinersoftware.com.

One comment in particular, posted by dan7000 (May 10, 2007 at 03:45 PM), confirmed that IdeaMason would probably be a bit hard for me to work with :

I’ve been using IdeaMason heavily for 2 months now, and I’m pretty disappointed.

It won’t work for what you want to do, because as far as I can tell, it doesn’t really handle external documents well at all.  There is a special “documents” tab that holds external documents, but those are not integrated into the rest of the program at all.  In other words, that tab is nothing more than a link list. You can’t associate any comments or even a citation with the external doc.

And, most disappointingly for your purposes, those documents can’t be searched.

One work-around is that you can create a “library” item, which has a “source on the web” tab, and view your external document there—it allows you to enter a local file:: url.  Library items can have comments and citations associated with them, so that solves that problem.  But you can’t easily view your document outside of their viewer, and, again, IM search does not search within the external document.

IM has a lot of other flaws for what it’s supposed to do.  I used it to research and write a major paper for my final year of law school, which is due tomorrow. I was really excited about it, and thought that it would help structure my writing process.  But it just slowed me down, and continues to do so, because of all the work-arounds I have to use—and because it is so painfully slow.  However, I do think it’s a nice concept, and someday I’ll write the IM folks with my wish-list and see if they’re responsive.

Of course, this is just one person's opinion. But what caught my attention, is what seems like and awkward management system of external documents... In my case this would be a HUGE issue. I’ll be watching for IM’s development, but it seems like I’ll just skip that version.

PS. By the way, grorgy... I hope you won't be put off by the comment I posted! I'm not trying to make IdeaMason sound like a bad app! It actually looks like a great app and I've mostly seen very positive reviews... but I'm trying to see its potential shortcomings to make a more informed decision...
