MerleOne,

Would you mind sharing a few example URLs where you'd like to see the sort of change you are interested in?

I ask because I'm not sure where to investigate.  For example, when I view "Show unread topics", I currently only seem to come across topics that have a "new" icon (perhaps that actually makes sense).   One place I was able to come across topics without "new" icons was in "unreplied topics".

Edited: Ah, I think may be you were thinking of at least the "Thread Marks" / "My Bookmarks" page -- does that sound right?

I've done some testing.

Here's what a I found:

Japanse OS + Japanese set as the language to use for non-Unicode applications
-Japanese text seems OK
-Korean text doesn't

Korean OS
-Korean text seems OK
-Japanese text doesn't

English OS + Japanese set as the language to use for non-Unicode applications
-Japanese text seems OK
-Korean text doesn't

English OS + Korean set as the language to use for non-Unicode applications
-Korean text seems OK
-Japanese text doesn't

So if I had to guess I'd say that the language to use for non-Unicode applications seems to be relevant...

Thanks for the response.

Perhaps I can try ClipTrap out on a machine with a Japanese environment taking into account some of what you mentioned.

BTW, I happened across a thread titled "UNICODE version of AutoHotkey" at the AHK forum.  Are you familiar with this?

At some point it seems at least one version of the script worked w/ Opera -- so there might still be a chance...

Do you use Firefox and Greasemonkey?  If so, may be one of the Greasemonkey scripts mentioned in this thread might be adapted appropriately.

Interesting idea :)

I tried it out for a bit and it seemed to work fine for the most part.

I encountered a problem when trying to work w/ certain kinds of strings -- e.g. some CJK-ish stuff didn't seem to go over very well.

The following series of steps appears to reproduce the problem in my environment:

  • Ensure ClipTrap is running
  • Visit translate.google.com
  • For text to translate, enter "test" - no double quotes
  • Choose to translate from English to Japanese
  • Select and copy the result of the translation -- should be two characters
  • In ClipTrap, observe that the second character seems different

Do you encounter the same issue?

Developer's Corner / Re: Anyone tried Google Code Search?
« Last post by ewemoa on May 03, 2009, 09:04 PM »
Thanks for sharing those two

I get the sense that Snipplr covers one type of thing (snippets), while Google's Code Search covers another type (full packages?).  I didn't figure out what Koders covers, but I got the sense that it at least covers the kind of thing that Google's Code Search does.

Does this impression seem accurate?

My favorite test search at the moment is for "beget" in JavaScript -- for this case, I seem to get more results from Google's Code Search than the others (are the results relevant?...good question!).  I wonder if anyone has done a more relevant comparison :)

I've updated to 1.0.0 and it seems to work as advertised (including the new hotkeys for resizing horizontally) :)

I'm not confident of this, but it seemed to me that the hotkeys didn't "take" until after I restarted FARR.  Did anyone else happen to notice this?

On a separate note, I've been trying out the "Center FARR when it appears" option.  I tried out the "and whenever it changes size" sub(?)-option but found that the FARR window seems to "bounce" as I type subsequent characters.  That was a bit much for my heart it seems, so for the moment, I've decided to pass on that, though I'm leaning toward giving the basic option a bit more of a spin ;)

Thanks again, phitsc!

I hope this digression will be tolerated...

But I absolutely love my http://Power Calculator on my PC.

I really like the past computation info in this and in SpeedCrunch (the latter has the option of a portable install :) ).

Now that I've got 2 displays connected to one machine, I finally tried this out.

I particularly like:

option to display FARR on monitor where mouse is

Nice work, phitsc!

I used to use either the following one or one of its descendents -- it was nice that I had teachers who were fine w/ me using it during tests :)

all of my programs (except url snooper which needs the winpcap drivers installed) can be run portably.

On a side note, I noticed the other day that the portable version of wireshark appears to install (and even offers to uninstall on exit) winpcap.  Is it worth considering this sort of behavior for url snooper?

For those interested in a PuTTY plugin, you can see what has me stalled in this thread.

dinesh_ms, thanks for the registry-related tip -- I think in the most recent code that I worked on (it's been a while), I ended up doing something that seems in line with your tip (but I don't remember at this point).

Living Room / Re: Some DC forum-related Greasemonkey Scripts
« Last post by ewemoa on April 10, 2009, 01:55 AM »
Sorry for not responding sooner.

The way the script currently works is by picking out portions of various pages using XPath expressions.  It turns out that the various pages on the forums are...well, varied in structure ;)  I didn't manage to come up with a single XPath expression (or a few) to handle all cases, so at the moment, it's pretty much a matter of adding support for additional page "types" piece-meal.

I don't know if mouser would be amenable to the following idea, but it occurs to me that if the forum templates were tweaked a bit (e.g. adding attributes to particular elements) it might make the scripts job easier, faster, and more comprehensive :)

Thanks for the feedback, mouser and houstier :)

Hope the scripts turn out to be useful -- perhaps some portions can evolve into an FF extension some day...

BTW, I just uploaded an updated version of the opening unread in tabs script.  The description in the OP has been updated accordingly -- the main changes have to do with confirming when more than 3 tabs are requested to be opened at once, spreading out the opening of the tabs over time (kindness toward client and server), and reloading of the page with the unread topics listing.

Living Room / Some DC forum-related Greasemonkey Scripts
« Last post by ewemoa on April 04, 2009, 03:54 AM »
I've put together a page with links to some DC forum-related Greasemonkey scripts.

At the moment, what's available is:

  • Script to change color of dates in certain DC forum posts and topics by age
  • Script to ease opening of unread DC forum topics in tabs

The former script requires that the date format for your user is set up to be of the form YYYY-MM-DD -- if people are interested in other formats being supported, please mention the formats and I will at least give them some consideration.  Also, it doesn't work for all pages that list topics -- if there's some page that isn't which you'd like, please give me a sample URL and I'll consider investigating feasibility.

topic-date-colored.png

The latter script is what I've started using to make viewing unread topics a little easier -- after installation some menu items are added to the Greasemonkey "User Script Commands" submenu.  Some items are for opening some number of unread topics in tabs while one is for opening just the unread topics which have their checkboxen checked.  I haven't gotten the accelerator key functionality working locally for some reason...

For sanity's sake, the script will ask for confirmation if it is asked to open more than 3 tabs at once -- and the tab opening should now be staggered by 1 second each.  The original page listing the unread topics should also get reloaded 1 second after the last tab is opened.

I've been using the forums for a bit now with avatar-displaying off.  If I get curious, I can visit dc using another browser while not logged in :)

I don't know what the potential impact from the perspective of performance might be (nor the work involved to get it working), but each user being able to configure whether they see other users' avatars on a per-user basis seems like another theoretical option -- sort of similar to "Ignore User", but not quite so extreme ;)
2374
If FARR could register as the default browser, would this idea be implementable as a FARR plugin? ;)
2375
The only thing I'm thinking is if you right click a link in a browser window to use a different browser, the browser with the link is bound to have a bunch of right click handlers and you wouldn't want to cut them out of the loop.

Ah, I wasn't thinking of trying to have FARR handle links clicked in browsers -- one of the contexts I had in mind was within windows of IM applications.
