BrowserTraySwitch / Re: Firefox 3 + IE6
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 02:14 PM »
a couple of things i need to know first:
1) can you set the default browsers sucessfully from within the browsers themselves? ie if you tell FF3 to be your default, is it obeyed? same question for IE?
2) can browsertrayswitch not switch to either of them successfully? or is it just switching to FF3 that doesnt work?

« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 01:17 PM »
ok i understand now -- very low tech and simple concept, but it makes sense.
it also makes sense in terms of the difference in cognitive difficulty of recognition (easy) vs. recall (hard) -- that is, its relatively easy to *recognize* your pin when you see it, even if its mixed in with a lot of noise, vs. trying to just recall it from memory without any cues.

maybe if there you like to I can write a simple js code which would do all the filling
i dont think thats necessary -- the pdf should be sufficient for everyone.

Glad people like the newsletter -- as always your suggestions of ways to improve it are always welcome, either posted here or emailed to me in private ([email protected]).

ps.
One of my biggest frustrations with the internet is how hard it can be for the little guy to get recognized.  If you feel like there is something that should be in one of our newsletters or on our blog, please don't hesitate to contact me about it.

Developer's Corner / OpenSSL Vulnerability?
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 11:47 AM »
This sounds awful..  Anyone with a better background in security want to jump in and tell us how big a deal this is in practice?

Almost two years ago in 2006 Debian decided to clean up their OpenSSL implementation. They found a few lines of code that were causing Valgrind and Purify to complain about access to uninitialized memory. Without a major investigation into the purpose of the suspect lines of code they were simply removed.
...
For the purposes of all the OpenSSL algorithms there was no deficiency. Encryption and decryption and hashes would be calculated correctly. The problem was that the PRNG used for generating keys by the OpenSSL library had been crippled when those critical lines were removed back in 2006. This was not discovered until just this week when Luciano Bello discovered that without those lines the only ‘random’ data used to seed the PRNG was the PID of the OpenSSL process. On many Linux systems the PID is limited to a positive signed 16 bit value. This means there are only 32,767 possibilities. When new keys and certificates were generated by OpenSSL they relied on this number to provide all of their entropy.

ps. I should say that I have come to loathe McAfee in terms of their shoddy and sloppy false positive behavior, but this security blog they have is consistently good.

Developer's Corner / Forking in Open Source Projects - Debate
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 11:23 AM »
Dare we say that the Coding Horror blog has been a little weak lately.. But today's blog essay was on a subject that I have been thinking about recently.  I was talking to DC member Gothi[c] about collaborating on an open source project, and i raised the possibility of using a custom license that would discourage or disallow forking.  I'm not a big fan of forking for a variety of reasons.

So I thought we might use this as a jumping off point to talk about the issue of "forking":

Forking is incredibly difficult to pull off. It is a painful, but necessary part of the evolution of open source software. Just as in real evolution, I suspect that most forks die in vast, nameless numbers, before they become strong enough to engender any forked progeny of their own. Forking is the absolute bedrock of open source software -- but it is also not a path to be chosen lightly.

Living Room / Re: Options to use Donation Credits to purchase stuff
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 11:00 AM »
Note that the first and main decision i make when evaluating any new idea is: "how much time is this going to take away from me coding?" so with any new plan we have to consider that, or consider whether any new work can be done by a volunteer.

Veign, maybe the question should be more general like:  What else would you like to be able to do with your donationcredits:
1) donate to special event funds set up by DC
2) buy shareware
3) gamble it away in a new DC Cody Casino
4) have funner ways to give it to the site
5) use it to purchase dc swag
6) other -- specify in thread

And in general one more think i want to add to this thread is that it would be really nice to find a way to encourage people to participate more in giving out their donationcredits to others on the site that contribute stuff to the site.  like the plugin writers, mini-review writers, general helper-outers, etc.

perhaps it's because i just woke up but i watched the video and felt like i was being subjected to a new form of torture.  20 minutes of watching numbers being slowly and randomly typed into a grid.  are you sure this isn't some new technique that the government is inventing to sneak by the geneva conventions?

I welcome the suggestions.. App's twist on the idea is also interesting, the idea of having something special that occasionally came up that the credits could be used for, something that would be sentimentally worth more than the actual monetary cost -- i think that is key. For $100 in donationcredits we will send a life sized Cody to your door so you can get a singing telegram from the DonationCoder mascot.

DesktopCoral is a program that is only useful for very specific types of uses.
See these discussions for why some people use it:

once its transparent and docked, you are stuck forever!!!!

just kidding -- you can still access settings from the tray icon right-click.

the general process for configuring Desktop Coral is to make it non-transparent, then dock it where you want, then change settings and make it transparent after you have it exactly how you want it.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Translation Plugin
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 02:47 AM »
It would probably be a good idea for adding a command in FARR to install a plugin, so as to avoid users having to manually unpack files in the FARR plugin directory themself.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Google Translation Plugin
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 02:45 AM »
I've checked the google translate plugin updating and like czb im not seeing any trouble.  its telling me that verstion 1.01.04 is installed and is on web.

I suspect that what might be happening is that you have google translate manually placed in a slightly different subdirectory than you should.

As czb says go look in your FARR plugin directory -- see if you dont have 2 dif subdirectories for it (maybe one double nested in like Plugins\Google_Translate\Google_Translate or something like that.. if so , delete it.

I suspect the problem is that the update from the web is installing, but you have an old copy in a dif location which is not being replaced.

Just tried it -- that's pretty cool cbbibleboy -- the transparency effect and dynamic grid sizing is pretty nice.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: perform random URL queries (Random Submitter)
« Last post by mouser on May 16, 2008, 12:11 AM »
More evidence that Scott, who requested "Random Submitter" back in early 2005, was a visionary ahead of his time:

A new program featured on BoingBoing today:
AntiPhormLite confounds BT's spyware by simulating random browsing

New version uploaded.

ps. I don't know if it's my imagination, but it seems to me that google has improved the grammar/syntax constraints on the translations.. they don't necessarily make more semantic sense than the used to, but they seem more likely to result in reasonable sounding prose.
