Dormouse,

I too shall stick with 2.2 and hope that it doesn't need any sort of major fix or update for a long time. I like it as it is now. As far as the "access from anywhere" concept, I can effectively do that now by syncing regularly to a USB Flash drive and then keeping that drive with me as much as reasonably possible.

The local option was added very recently and it is obviously in response to those complaining about being forced to use a server-only version. That's a good sign IMO. Hopefully they will decide that a large enough piece of their user base wants to keep their Evernotes data local.

Of course if a large enough market really jumps on the new online version, that will be enough for them to go with the online version alone. Let's face it: software is a market-driven product, like most, and they will go where the most money is to be made.

None of the Evernote apps have a license number.

What you need to do is uninstall. Reinstall the older version and start the upgrade again. While it is downloading the updated version check your user Temp folder (in XP is is at c:\Document and Settings\<user id>\Local settings\Temp and you should be able to find the installer.

Once it has downloaded quickly copy and paste it as IIRC the updater deletes the installer when it finishes.

This is the full version installer.

Exactly, Carol.

I used to go crazy trying to locate the "full" setup file to install after, say, reinstalling the OS on my PC.

Lack of a way to easily reinstall the licensed version has always been a "downside" to me.

General Software Discussion / Share Large Files Immediately With Eatlime
« Last post by J-Mac on March 22, 2008, 11:49 PM »
Saw an article about this web site at LifeHacker recently:

http://www.eatlime.com/

If you register you can upload files up to 1 GB. Without registering you can go as large as 100 MB.

And the really neat part is that your friends can start downloading the file while you are uploading it!  If you test it by uploading a large file there and then start downloading the same file, you are getting the file back virtually in real time.  Brilliant!!

Jim

Follow-up Notes:

1) In the comments at LifeHacker some are recommending http://www.pipebytes.com/ because they have no size limit on files uploaded. However they allow only one download and then auto-delete the file.   :o

2) Also, a commenter at LifeHacker says that Eatlime previously did business as YouSwap.com and that many times uploads would suddenly fail with I/O errors. I haven't yet confirmed this myself though.

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by J-Mac on March 22, 2008, 10:47 PM »
Well, as SQLNotes has been progressing and I read that it has matured a bit as an application I decided to try it one more time. Installation (Full) seemed to go fine. I restarted and then just left it alone - that was this morning and I had other things to get done today.  Tonight I opened the program and while it looks a little different it still doesn't work here!

Different issues completely this time:  I cannot do anything at all with the program once it is opened.  If I click on the New Grid... icon or select File>New from the menubar, all I get is "Warning 1: cmdbar......." in the bottom status bar.  That stays on there for about 30 seconds and then disappears - nothing I do wipes it off earlier than that. For some clicks on the words down the left side - like Search, Mantis, etc. - I get that same "Warning 1:" message; for others I get "Error 3:..." and that hangs around for about 30 seconds also. After cycling through these for a short time the entire application suddenly locks up and the sqlnotes process burns 50% of my CPU, which is certainly not acceptable.

This computer is running on Windows XP SP2, fully patched, and the OS was recently reinstalled in mid-February so the machine is fairly fresh. Has anyone seen this before?

BTW, this just doesn't seem to be a match made in Heaven!!

Living Room / Re: [SORTED] how big is a webpage :) broadband - 1 or 10GB?
« Last post by J-Mac on March 22, 2008, 09:59 PM »
… Basically, I think the 200KB number is a bit skewed. It was probably true about 5 years ago, but sites are moving towards much richer and visually intense experiences now. The money is in delivering fantastic experiences to people that are likely to spend it. i.e. Those with broadband. I'm not saying that people with dialup are poor and won't spend money, but there is a much better chance to make a sale to someone with broadband.…

It's certainly possible that the data was dated - as I mentioned above it was a web hosting site - not a site that hosts, but a forum or advice-type site - and was showing how to determine bandwidth for those who are trying to select a hosting plan at various hosts. I do remember that it had some examples and one was CNN.com at 200 kb; another was Yahoo at 70 kb. It showed the sizes of several different well-known web sites and seemed to average close to 200 kb for the types of sites that would commonly be browsed on a mobile device -- remember, at first I thought that was what tomos was talking about.

But like I said, this data could be old; I looked for a date but did not find any on the page. I looked at about 8 or 10 sites from a Google search and I wasn't really looking at which ones I used - I didn't expect to have to pull it up again!

But you do seem to have a lot of knowledge about this so I most humbly bow to your expertise!   :D

Thanks!

Renegade,

I think those estimates are for actual tested downloads, which would probably include compression. Don't have it now but it was on a web-hosting Q&A page I found last night by Googling.

Not certain though - it didn't mention compression there.

Tom,

If you want to calculate a representative bandwidth monthly for your friend, let's try it.

Average web page = ~200 kb   (That's a little high, I think; Yahoo is about 70 - 80 kb/page while CNN is about 200 kb/page).

Assume he will download (view) 20 web pages daily:  200kb X 20/day =  4,000 kb or 4 MB daily  (I'm using nominal conversions rather than actual)

For a monthly total, say 4 MB/day X 31 days = 124 MB or .124 GB/month.  Allow a factor of 1.5 or 2.0 for "financial safety". That makes it .124 X 2.0 = .248, or about a quarter GB per month.

Now that's assuming viewing 20 pages daily only. No ringtones, games, etc. downloaded. If you want to include something for that (and I certainly would!):

Allow ~ 5 downloads a day @ ~ 100 kb/download = 500 kb X 31 days = 15,500 kb / 15.5 MB / .0155 GB X 2.0 safety =  .031 GB / month

Add that to the web browsing and it's about 0.248 + 0.031 =  0.279 GB

Remember, though: 20 web page views daily is extremely minimal.  I'm using that only if your friend is financially prudent.  In reality if he is going to be checking email also he will be up at or near the 1 GB limit.

Hey -- Wait a minute - Is this for browsing on a mobile phone device? Or tethering?  (Using the mobile device to connect a PC to the web.)

If a PC, get the 10 GB plan at a minimum!!

An extra gig is €20? That's insane :o

Especially considering that bandwidth @ $2.00/GB is expensive... (You can buy it for $0.18/GB through Amazon S3, but that's servers, not home use.)

Makes me glad that I live in South Korea. Bandwidth is like water here. I'm pretty sure that I chew up more than 10GB per month, as I can chew 1GB in a day fairly often. I kind of feel sorry for everyone that can only get metered accounts.  :wallbash:

@Renegade:

Is that Amazon S3 bandwidth? Or storage/Disk space?  I thought that was disk space but could certainly be wrong about it.

@tomos:

Problem is that the wireless companies, at least here in the USA, charge for overages by the KB rather than GB. They don't make all that money they rake in by being generous, that's for sure! Here it is almost always beneficial to go with the higher plan if they are uncertain how much they'll use. Unless they become locked in for a long period of time. If they want to be careful and try to save as much as possible, they should go with the 1 GB plan and use it normally but track usage daily. If they get too close, stop for the rest of that month, and then jump it to the next level the following month.

But I haven't yet heard anything from anyone using SQL Notes that has clarified anything for me.
OK, how about these metaphors:

  • A very large Excel sheet where you can control which rows and columns are displayed. Multiple views of the same sheet. Making a change in one updates all others
  • A standard 2-pane outliner where the 1st pane (outline) is dynamically generated, not a static outline
  • Wikipad with wiki links in both the wiki content and in the wikiOutline
  • A database where you can add fields as easily as records or "Easy MSAccess" as superboyac once said
  • All this data is visible (live) by ODBC enabled applications (Word, Excel, Access)
  • Can pull data from on-line database for local browsing. If Mouser created a read-only account on DC MySQL server, you could have a local copy of whole DC content... 1 click refresh... wouldn't that be nice?
  • And the list goes on and on

I hope this helps. The free phone call would certainly help too. Anytime...

Pierre,

There is no denying that you have offered help to many potential users. But as I mentioned recently to superboyac, I need application-specific documentation to 1) Learn at MY pace, which may differ greatly from anyone's one-time helpful comments, and 2) I also need same documentation to reference as I need it.

The app has been in beta and the thread about it was made over five months ago and I haven't seen anything that I would need to get involved with SQL Notes personally. IMO, it is as important to develop a user-friendly UI as it is to develop a strong application!  If that ever happens then perhaps I will try it again. Without an interface I feel I can use and reference docs, I am going to continue my quest for a database app I feel comfortable with, and a notes program for day-to-day use.

Thanks!

Putting it another way - I usually have no problem when someone explains something to me the first time. I really do catch on quick (regardless of what my wife says!!)

But I haven't yet heard anything from anyone using SQL Notes that has clarified anything for me. Anytime someone asks me to give it another try, they just point me toward the beta site and tell me it is really easy once you get started. I just can't seem to get to that "Aha!" moment that I usually do with most applications. I haven't said much because I figured it was only me who didn't "get it".

When you are on a forum filled with coders you can start to feel really..... "duh"=like!

I had exactly the same reaction Dormouse ... SQLNotes simply baffles me and I have tried it 3 or 4 times and ended up deleting it again. I also suspect it is going to cost big time when completed!
-Carol Haynes (March 21, 2008, 11:35 AM)

Make that three of us, at least.

I must not be "geeky" enough!  When I last tried it the documentation wasn't quite what I need to get going with something like this. (Sorry Pierre - I just couldn't "get it"   :( )

I need something where the developer has taken care of the program stuff and added a UI that is more or less self-explanatory.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your preferred File Manager
« Last post by J-Mac on March 20, 2008, 11:02 PM »
hello

can anyone tell me IF any of the mentioned or other file managers are independent of explorer.exe?

I am not sure how file managers work

do they uses explorer.exe to get access to the folders and files and then displays the information with their own style?

do they use explorer.exe to perform its tasks? (eg copy, paste, etc)

or are they totaly independent of explorer.exe?

I am asking this, because I see very little or maybe zero difference between file managers and explorer.exe, when I compare the speed, system resources consumption, stability, etc

I love the interface of file managers, but I really need a more optimized, stable and fast file manager than explorer.exe, that will be able for example to open fast a dir with many subfolders, etc and not just to offer customized buttons and menus

thanks

kalos,

Though I can't say with certainty, I believe that all I have tried do run on the back of explorer.exe and subsequently use Explorer's feature set as well as add several features of their own. And I must take exception and say that some - if not most - of the third party file explorers do add more than just "…customized buttons and menus…".

The only two I have experience with are Directory Opus and Total Commander, and both offer a number of additional features that you cannot use with explorer.exe on its own.  I'm not sure whether or not you've read through this thread - I realize that it's a long one - but if you want to know what specifically these utilities can do above and beyond what explorer.exe does you can find a lot of it here in this thread.

You'll find better and faster searches, the ability to unpack/extract various types of compressed archives, multiple panes and tabbed interfaces in which you can drag and drop files to move and/or copy them, access ftp servers directly from the file explorer replacements, color-code files and folders that you want highlighted for whatever reasons, and more that I am not taking the time to list here.

The easiest way to find out just what they can do besides look different is to read through the posts to help you decide which you might like to look at more closely, and then download trial versions and give those that interest you a try. Can't hurt anything, and you may find out that there is something you can use.

I used to use Sonic's MyDVD Deluxe Suite and then their DVDit a couple of years ago for all my DVD authoring. They were pretty good and had virtually every tool for most formats - but that was before MP4 Video was out, I think. Now Roxio bought them out and I'm not certain what they have done with them. I did try Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 but they come out with an entire new release each year - no upgrades for current users - and 9 was pretty much a bust, so I abandoned it.

But I'll keep an eye out for a good MP4 video editor.

Don't get me wrong - there are some online apps I really like and use: Toodledo for my tasklist; Backpack by 37 Signals for kind of a personal intranet site. But I use my notes apps for far too much that I don't want online only.

Good thing I also use One Note 2007 and AM Notes!

Jim

Early posts indicated that the local storage was gone, but when most there complained about this they changed their tune and said that something will be done to add local backups in the future - but nothing like that is there yet. Definitely sounds like what will be added back will be a very limited local storage - they're really pushing the "sharing your notes with friends" concept.

I hate that!

Jim
2347
I have Evernote and OneNote 2007 and I am thinking the same way.  I see what they are trying to do with Evernote 3, and I imagine some will like that. But not me!

Jim
2348
Online storage raises privacy issues as well.

Yeah, you have to sign in to use your Evernote database, and then you have to mark everything "Private" or "Public".  I really hate that because it is too easy to accidentally make public that which you had meant to keep private. Too much risk of that for me to want to put anything online. Plus, they can easily expose all your private data - those who maintain the servers are not infallible.

Jim
2349
Awww man -- they are making it an "online application".  Trying to make a social network out of Evernote. Interact with Facebook and all that. It says they will try to add some local database support back in before the beta is over, but it doesn't sound like a priority for them. I don't like that at all.

Hopefully they will support 2.2 for a while, because I won't bother with the online version. I don't need nor want that. It appears they have a new CEO at Evernote and this is his big thing  -social networking.

Booo!
