Reason most fail to be listed is that they do something wrong, eg. incorrect ratios reported, choking clients unnecessarily, etc.

Low end VPS is a real buyer beware situation.

But the deals from reputable providers are too good to pass up sometimes  ;D

eg.
OpenVZ
50GB space
512MB + 512MB
3 virtual cores
1Gbps
2TB / month traffic

for $15/year, was absolutely excellent at the time I was looking and the provider has been very good.

« Last post by 4wd on September 10, 2014, 02:18 PM »
One thing about using the filesystemwatcher to be aware of is that it loses connection to the watched folder after having been up for a while- most especially on network or mapped folders- and that's a known limitation.

Oh well, it's been an exercise in Powershell :)

Completed version, probably some redundant code, requires .NET 4.5 due to one of the procedures, IIRC.

Anyway, it works here OK creating shortcuts to folders and sub-folders in 'My Documents' on the 'Desktop'.

One caveat, I'm not checking for the prior existence of a shortcut the same name.  So if someone creates a folder called 'test' followed by a sub-folder called 'test', the create shortcut command will most likely fail.

Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. #By BigTeddy 05 September 2011
  2.
  3. #This script uses the .NET FileSystemWatcher class to monitor file events in folder(s).
  4. #The advantage of this method over using WMI eventing is that this can monitor sub-folders.
  5. #The -Action parameter can contain any valid Powershell commands.  I have just included two for example.
  6. #The script can be set to a wildcard filter, and IncludeSubdirectories can be changed to $true.
  7. # Version 1.1
  8.
  9. $global:folder = [environment]::getfolderpath("mydocuments")  # Path to users 'My Documents'
  10. $global:desktop = [environment]::getfolderpath("desktop")  # Path to users 'Desktop'
  11. $filter = '*.*'  # You can enter a wildcard filter here.
  12.
  13. # In the following line, you can change 'IncludeSubdirectories to $true if required.
  14. $fsw = New-Object IO.FileSystemWatcher $folder, $filter -Property @{IncludeSubdirectories = $true;NotifyFilter = [IO.NotifyFilters]'DirectoryName, LastWrite'}
  15.
  16. # Here, the creation event is registered.
  17.
  18. Register-ObjectEvent $fsw Created -SourceIdentifier FileCreated -Action {
  19. $name = $Event.SourceEventArgs.Name
  20. $changeType = $Event.SourceEventArgs.ChangeType
  21. $timeStamp = $Event.TimeGenerated
  22. Write-Host "The folder '$name' was $changeType at $timeStamp" -fore green
  23. # Out-File -FilePath d:\outlog.txt -Append -InputObject "The file '$name' was $changeType at $timeStamp"
  24.
  25. $result = $name.LastIndexOf('\')
  26. if ($result -eq -1) {
  27.   $DestinationPath = $desktop + '\' + $name + '.lnk'
  28.   } elseif ($result -gt 0) {
  29.   $DestinationPath = $desktop + '\' + $name.SubString($result + 1) + '.lnk'
  30.   }
  31. $WshShell = New-Object -comObject WScript.Shell
  32. $Shortcut = $WshShell.CreateShortcut($DestinationPath)
  33. $Shortcut.TargetPath = $folder + '\' + $name
  34. $Shortcut.WorkingDirectory = $folder + '\' + $name
  35. $Shortcut.Save()
  36. }
  37.
  38. # To stop the monitoring, run the following commands:
  39. # Unregister-Event FileCreated

You should be able to accomplish this with Powershell using the following information:

Powershell FileSystemWatcher
Create Shortcuts using Powershell

Seems rather straightforward.

Modified the first Powershell script to monitor Folder Creation only, atm just outputs to logfile and Powershell interface:

Code: PowerShell [Select]
  1. #By BigTeddy 05 September 2011
  2.
  3. #This script uses the .NET FileSystemWatcher class to monitor file events in folder(s).
  4. #The advantage of this method over using WMI eventing is that this can monitor sub-folders.
  5. #The -Action parameter can contain any valid Powershell commands.  I have just included two for example.
  6. #The script can be set to a wildcard filter, and IncludeSubdirectories can be changed to $true.
  7. # Version 1.1
  8.
  9. $folder = [environment]::getfolderpath("mydocuments")  # Path to users 'My Documents'
  10. $filter = '*.*'  # You can enter a wildcard filter here.
  11.
  12. # In the following line, you can change 'IncludeSubdirectories to $true if required.
  13. $fsw = New-Object IO.FileSystemWatcher $folder, $filter -Property @{IncludeSubdirectories = $true;NotifyFilter = [IO.NotifyFilters]'DirectoryName, LastWrite'}
  14.
  15. # Here, the creation event is registered.
  16.
  17. Register-ObjectEvent $fsw Created -SourceIdentifier FileCreated -Action {
  18. $name = $Event.SourceEventArgs.Name
  19. $changeType = $Event.SourceEventArgs.ChangeType
  20. $timeStamp = $Event.TimeGenerated
  21. Write-Host "The folder '$name' was $changeType at $timeStamp" -fore green
  22. Out-File -FilePath d:\outlog.txt -Append -InputObject "The file '$name' was $changeType at $timeStamp"}
  23.
  24. # To stop the monitoring, run the following command:
  25. # Unregister-Event FileCreated

I'll try and add in the shortcut bit now.

FWIW, all the VPS' I've got atm, (only 4 - but they're addictive), I got through deals via Low End Box.

Low End Talk, their sister site, is a good place to do any research on a provider, eg. FortaTrust

I'm currently in the UK and I hit a paywall no matter which link I use.  This happens in both K-Meleon and IE.

In IE however, using the Google redirector I can see the whole article for a couple of seconds before the paywall feature kicks in.

Same thing in Cyberfox, see the whole article for a couple of seconds then the paywall happens.

However, these are practically always hardware related (in my personal/anecdotal experience at least).

Just to add to this, I've had the same experience here with Delayed Write Failure and in almost every case it's always come down to one piece of hardware - the SATA or USB data cables.

For SATA - those cheap, non-locking ones that were so prevalent a few years ago.  Low contact pressure combined with with the heating/cooling cycles within a PC case don't make for a happy combination.

For USB - the constant plug/unplug or the mechanics of the plug/socket sometimes result in a marginal electrical contact.  (eg. On my netbook there's one USB port where if I plug a cable all the way in, the device isn't recognised - pull it back 1 mm or 2 and it's fine.  Thus any decent vibration will result in the plugged-in device suddenly disappearing from the system.)

My neighbour is a kiwi. I forget whether it was her or someone else pointing out the pronunciation of 'e' is often like 'i' in New Zealand.

Normally it's the other way round, (for me anyway), quickest way to identify a Kiwi is get them to say the Number of the Beast  ;)

Works every time, even in the back blocks of Nevada ...

I would have thought that if you click on the "Get Shipment Label" you'd more than likely confirm your email address as a potential spam recipient as well as get taken to a site that possibly adds all kinds of tracking cookies and whatnot.

I've been getting these for months, yet another reason why any email that contains HTML goes straight to the bin.

What has this got to do with letterboxing?

Inscription
In Memory Of
James Perrott
Who Died May 23rd 1895
Aged 80 Years
Also Mary His Wife
Who Died March 12th 1898
Aged 79 Years

Answer
He was the guide from Chagfordw that started letterboxing by installing the first letterbox at Cranmere Poolw.

The History of Letterboxing:
The year was 1854, and a Victorian guide named James Perrott placed a bottle in the wildest, most inaccessible area on Dartmoor, England, along the banks of Cranmere Pool. In it, he included his calling card so future visitors could contact him and leave their own calling cards. Little did anyone know, this small act would be become the hobby we now know as letterboxing.

His grave is in St Michael's Church, Chagford.

I thought it may be of interest to someone - the cottage we're staying in, in Chagford is named after Cranmere Pool.

At some point I'll work up the energy to walk to it (~6km) ... or not  :)

Your best alternative, and also the easiest, is to get a cheap 3G WiFi router and just not bother to put a SIM in it.
Instant portable WiFi HotSpot - I do this all the time with the added bonus of being able to use a SIM from whatever country I'm in to give internet access to my phone, tablet, and netbook.

Something like the TP-LINK TL-MR3020 which can usually be picked up for less than AU$30.

However, if all you want is a simple, cheap way to connect all your devices when there isn't a ready-made WiFi or mobile network available, a portable WiFi router is probably your best bet.

* I should point out that the TP-LINK TL-MR3020 requires an external 3G USB modem if you want that feature - I use a ZTE MF60 (integrated 3G modem).

Is there any way to not see the black command window from loading? Can you put on the backround?

You could use cmdow to implement the command line with the /HID option.

Your AV will most likely complain about cmdow due to its be able to run commands in a hidden window - this automatically makes it something to be avoided like the plague as far as they're concerned.

But given that @anandcoral has found the original program, that'd probably be easier.
