Cool but why the dependency with winrar (more exactly the need to get winrar.exe to make it work)?

As I explained above, the WinRAR/RAR license does not allow me to distribute the Rar.exe file.  Here is an excerpt from the license:

   5. The RAR/WinRAR unlicensed trial version may be freely distributed,
with exceptions noted below, provided the distribution package is not
      modified in any way.

      a.  No person or company may distribute separate parts of the package
with the exception of the UnRAR components, without written
          permission of the copyright owner.

      b.  The RAR/WinRAR unlicensed trial version may not be distributed
inside of any other software package without written permission
          of the copyright owner.

      c.  Hacks/cracks, keys or key generators may not be included on the
          same distribution.

Can't be integrated instead some other free or open source (if the license allow) app as 7zip, IZArc ( a cool chinese unzipper ) or similar ?

The Comic Book Archive Creator application does use the 7-zip commandline exe to create CBZ, CB7, and CBT files.  You only need to provide your own Rar.exe file if you want to create CBR files.  Does that make things clearer?

Skwire,  It happened again, and this time, I did some testing and narrowed it down to the point where I can successively reproduce the failure.

Awesome.  Thanks for taking the time to figure this out.  I think I've worked around the issue in this build.  Please try it out and let me know.  Thanks.

Thanks.  I should really point out that the key features of this app are:

  • PDF as an input format.  This means that CBAC will take a PDF and convert each page to an image file.
  • The ability to change the order of images and PDFs in the list before actually creating the CBR/Z/7 file.

I will soon be adding the ability to use CBR/Z/7 files as an input format, too.

should it make any difference on a 64-bits Win 7 if PlayTime is placed in Program Files or in Program Files (x86) ?
Nope, it's just a location, PF/PFx86 has no extra special meaning, other than being more protected from modification by access rights, so you can't (shouldn't) store user-stuff there.

Ath is correct.  So, if you run the default UAC settings on your computer, PlayTime is not going to be able to save any settings to its local config.ini file.

***** I will probably use it for less than 10,000 records, so this is good.

You should be fine with this number of records.

A quick check did not show any bad results from 2 users accessing at the same time. If they both were on the same record, the last one 2 save or change seems to be the one that had the data recorded his way.  It is unlikely my users would be on the same record.

Keep in mind that Snap DB doesn't have any concept of saving individual records, i.e., it's a single flat file.  That single SNP file gets written, in full, each time you save it.  You have to think of this like two people having the same text file open.  Both can open the file and make independent changes but the last person to save will overwrite any and all changes made previously by either person.  Does that make sense?

Any suspected problems I need to test for in using with multiple users on a network?

Yes, what I just described above.

Any chance of using some simple form of file locking (of the database file on the server) which starts for the first user to open the file?

No, since I feel that's out of design scope for this app.  I didn't design it, at all, with the idea of supporting multiple users.

If I seem unreceptive to the idea of your multiple-user scenario, I apologise.  I'm just trying to let you know that you're going to run into trouble if you allow multiple users to modify an SNP file at the same time.  If you simply plan to allow multiple users to use the database for lookups, that is, no modifications, you should be okay.

With the exception of the undo request, the others are certainly doable.  Did you happen to read my reply to your original post, though?

General Software Discussion / Re: Snap DB shared on a network?
« Last post by skwire on July 12, 2012, 01:11 PM »
I am thinking about using Snap Db for a serial/ part number database.  It will be used intermittently by 4 users, from a shared folder on a SBS 2008 server.
Questions:
1) Is there a limit of how many records can be stored?
2) Does it get along with being shared on a network? Any issues to look out for?
3) Will it work as multi-user (simultaneous) or only be one user at a time?

Hi, garyreif, and welcome to the site.  As to your questions:

1) I've tested it with around 80,000 records but, as the number of records grows, it's slower to load the file.  The largest database that I, personally, use it with has a few thousand records.
2/3) Sure, a single user could store the files on a network share (I do that with mine).  That said, I wouldn't recommend using it simultaneously in a shared environment as Snap DB is not multi-user aware whatsoever.

Keep in mind that Snap DB is not an actual relational database.  Rather, it's a simple flat-file system designed for relatively light use.  If you plan on using it in a commercial setting, you may want to explore some more robust options out there.  However, if you can make Snap DB work for your environment, that's great.   :D

Is there any reason your plan has changed?  I ask because my plan was to do the same thing... and with 40's announcement, I have it in my newegg cart... didn't see a downside to using it even if they discontinue it.

Agreed.

I've been running the same WHS v1 (not WHS 2011) box I built for nearly five years and don't have any plans to shut it down.  Except for the occasional drive failure, I've had nary a problem with it.  Even the drive failures weren't that big of a deal since I had duplication on.  In other words, I didn't lose any files.  Great product -- it's too bad they're discontinuing it.

One thing to try is to go to the Services console, right-click the Apache service and choose Properties.  Once there, go to the Recovery tab and set all the dropdowns to "Restart the Service."

Oops.  Thanks for the clarification

No worries whatsoever.  :)  It just bugs me to no end when a CSV file is NOT comma-separated.  I've even seen apps spit out a so-called CSV file that is semi-colon-separated.  Good grief.   >:(

Oooo- I figured it out - I had copied a bunch of aspx code - html and css - before it broke.  After I cleared the clip.txt file, it worked again.  Sorry, I wish I had saved a copy of clip.txt for you to look at...

Wow...very strange.  If you ever can make it do that again, by all means, send me the clip.txt file.  Thanks for reporting this.
