You'd think MS could do better. Or maybe just license Nuance's "dragon" technology. Seems like they could do that cost effectively. They've done it with other tech in the past, like defragmenters...

Sure it's "fair", it's just that the licensing terms and availability of compatible applications should be taken into account. :D

Compression of every format, including RAR and 7Z, very much depends on the type of file being compressed. For example 3D OBJ models tend to be compressed extremely well by 7-Zip - better than RAR even. Whereas Terragen .ter terrain files tend to compress better with RAR. There is no clear winner as far as I know. Hopefully 7-Zip's format will continue to gain support and it can be more safely used as a general compression format in the future but for now RAR is a safer bet from a compatibility standpoint.

Super cool VDub filter. I'd say it looks just about as good as A Scanner Darkley - so as f0dder said, why hand trace? :P

Yes, I like the idea of "getting up early for me". Now I just need to figure out what would be worth it to *me* to get out of bed that early, consistently. ;) Interestingly if there is ever anything I really *am* looking forward to early in the morning then it's a whole lot easier to get up. I actually rather like my job, but it's not like I eagerly look forward to it every day, hehe. But let's say I was getting up to meet my girlfriend and go for a hike or something - that'd definitely be more motivating than just getting up daily for work. So it's all about finding good reasons to get up, reasons to be excited in the morning. Maybe if I go to bed every night with at least one thing left undone, and save it for the morning, I'll be eager to get up the next day. lol

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Maya for Free

Carrara is really a steal right now. For the stuff most hobbyist users will need it is a tremendous value and essentially rivals Maya, etc. for capability *in that market*. In other words you take Carrara's ease of use and accessability, and feature list and it compares quite favorably against the obviously more capable but also harder to use Maya and other such high-end apps. A lot of the greater capabilities of those apps also come with a large learning curve. And amusingly Carrara even includes a few things Maya doesn't - like an effective instancing system. :D

Mukestart that's actually a really interesting distinction. As a non-programmer I can't claim a deep enough understanding to say whether that's really legitimate, but somehow it makes a little bit of intuitive sense to me. ;)

I think there are two things that are important in what you said.

1: Try waking up even earlier, even if it's earlier than you "need" to. Yes, I thought of this after reading your initial post when I was writing my own. I haven't *really* tried this. But there are some potentially fundamental issues with it which I'll go into in a moment.

2: Do "something" when you wake up. This is interesting and I think it's good advice, that I haven't really stuck to before.

So I think I can say it's possible you are right, since I haven't really given either of those methods a good try. Here are my issues and thoughts however (most are solvable, but not necessarily easily/cheaply/efficiently):

A: I find it phsyically very difficult and a very long process to wake up at almost any time of day. There are rare moments when I simply wake up almost instantly and it just somehow works, and I wish I could channel that at other times, but I can never do it at will. The brain state that controls me at wake time is a different one than one who might resolve something the night before, so even though I may have intention to just spring right out of bed and "do my thing", my morning brain puts a quick stop to that. I don't know quite how to circumvent that.

B: I have done the early morning thing for many years before now, so it's not a matter of time spent doing it. I do have some associations with early mornings - school and work of course. I'm not sure whether these are involved.

C: I also find that 8 or less hours of sleep is best. More than that almost always makes me more tired. 6-7 seems fine most of the time. Less can be an issue, but even then it's not usually major.

D: I do not drink coffee on a regular basis. I'd say about once a month. So lack of stimulants could be a big issue, even though you "only" drink once a day. :D

E: I don't watch TV, don't have a TV (watch movies, etc. on my computer though). When I wake up in the morning my time is purely functionally oriented. I take about 20 minutes to get ready for work so I wake up about 20 minutes before I have to go. That's it, no leisure time, no "getting other things done" time. I think of extra time awake before I *have* to be awake as wasted and unpleasant. This may tie into my poor time management. There are few tasks I can think of that would be genuinely productive for me to do in the morning that would be short enough to fit into a reasonable morning timeslot. I suppose all my forum checks could go there, that wouldn't be bad. A general morning 'net check. Exercise would be a good thing too...

F: The biggie: cold. It's almost always way colder than I like it to be any time before 10AM. The cold is a big part of what keeps me in bed where it is invariably warmer. I could get a space heater or something, but it would have to be on a timer. That too is feasible. It's not something I've ever tried. But my assumption is that if the outside temperature were pleasant or even warm, I'd be more inclined to get up. I simply detest the "shock" method of waking up - getting out of warm bed into cold air, splashing water on the face, taking a morning shower, etc. I don't do any of that because I don't like it.

So perhaps a lot of it comes down to attitude or ingrained habits. I don't really know. I do still feel that there are people just more naturally inclined toward day or night schedules, or somewhere in-between, and it is very hard for me to argue how well my natural sleep cycle tendency works in terms of time spent sleeping, awake time, ease of waking up, etc. 4AM to Noon seems to be my sweet spot...

I will consider your experiences and advice though. Somehow I doubt I will change anything fundamentally, but it could be interesting to essentially have my work day in the middle of my day - wake at 5, go to work at 9, return at 5, sleep at 10 or 11...

Yeah, I get what you're saying. Certainly I would agree that filtering based on headlines/titles alone is silly. I'm not sure that's entirely what's happening, but that obviously plays a big role. One would actually hope that this sort of system would result in more content being read that otherwise wouldn't (provided it's of quality) in that - if people trust the system - they ought to investigate anything that shows up in it at least to the same degree, if not more so, than they would any other source of media. That being the case as long as one person actually takes the time to read something and discover its value, despite a poor headline, they can then call other people's attention to it, potentially giving it more exposure than it otherwise might get. Perhaps even more interestingly they can choose their own headlines to encourage more viewers, which throws an interesting twist into the whole thing.

Anyway I still come back to what the root of the issue is and I think one of the problems, if there are any, is these sites claiming (are they?) that they obsolete other media. They don't, they're just supplementary. I don't think *any* one form of media or media outlet very often truly obsoletes another, and this is no different. If they're claiming otherwise, well it's in their best interest to do so, it's simply marketing, and marketing hyperbole is nothing new. But it's definitely incorrect, and it can be annoying to hear that, and worse to hear people echoing it.

Yet this is no different from things that have been going on forever. This is directly reflective of how people always react to these kinds of systems, services, phenomena, technologies. It's just like fashion, which does intensely annoy me. Sometimes I even rant about it, so I suppose I can identify.

I guess I just wonder what all the debate is accomplishing; what end it is potentially working toward. Are you (or anyone interested in this) trying to show people that the marketing is hype, are you trying to get Digg to actually change for the better, etc? It all seems kind of undirected to me, like we could argue all day about it but even if we agreed... what then?

Haha! OK YouTube came back. I heard Fett's Vette ages ago but never saw that video. Great stuff. Love the dancing. :D

Zaine, dug your selections too. The Spock one is hilarious, World On Fire is really touching, and I love that Hem song (fell in love with that band a few years ago when their debut came out) and it's well used in that commercial as well.

I'll have dig through my video archives and see if some of my old favorites have been put up on YouTube yet...

I think this is very interesting. I'm wondering, as it seems pmowbray is, whether this is being intended as a sort of general software license model like the many open source models (GPL, etc.). In other words, as said, would there need to be some kind of "regulating body" - a group that determines the terms of the license and also enforces it for those that choose to use it? Interesting concept, perhaps outside the scope of what is done here now, but a potentially wortwhile and ambitious project.

I really like the idea of the survey and I highly encourage implementing it. I think it should be required once for a license as an alternative to donating. *However* I am thinking that a *later* survey (after the person has used the app for a while) might be a lot more valuable (and hence a better stand-in for a donation). So how would you get someone to come back and take your survey later instead? I don't suppose collecting the e-mail address only on initial licensing and then sending out an expiry notice and request to take the survey for unlimited future licensing would be tolerated. How about having a completely optional survey (that you can skip with one button click) that precedes each download of a major version release? That way you do get your ongoing feedback, which I think is of greatest value.

Quite frankly I think this whole "relicensing after 6 month is intolerable" thing is kind of ludicrous. We get this software essentially for free and only have to do something to ensure that every 6 months? Small, small price to pay IMO. The question is how valuable is each user of your software, paying or otherwise? If pure numbers are what matters then do everything possible not to nag. But that does beg the question: why donationware? You see lots of *freeware* author's pages that have donate links on them. Is that software donationware? Perhaps it would help in this discussion to more clearly differentiate between donationware and freeware. I think I get the basic differences, but there are some potential gray areas.

On a final note, I rather like the idea of "pay what you want" software and I wonder how it would fair against a donationware model. If you *must* pay something, even if it's a minimal amount, how much would that put people off? Interesting stuff.

I do have more stuff to say on this but I've kind of run out of steam. I'll keep an eye on this thread and add more as it comes up though.

Nudone, I'm not so sure about that. It may not have been difficult for you, but I've definitely done both - night owl and early riser - and night owl is *way* easier for me. Right now I get up around 8:30AM for work every morning and it's *always* a struggle. Yet if I get the same ~8 hours of sleep and go to bed around 4AM, wake up around noon, it's totally natural and totally comfortable. There are actually even evolutionary arguments for "night people"... http://www.systemsth...mind/nightowls.shtml

I've had a somewhat similar experience. I definitely consider donations much more seriously now, and do donate more often. I suppose it's the same with you; discretion is still exercised, but things that truly deserve donations actually get them from me now. It sounds like the same for you. If there are more like us, the donation model can be successful.
