There's some good stuff there! I'll ponder it and use what parts of that advice my feeble abilities can manage!
 ;D

Edit: let me try asking a more targeted question:

I have perhaps 5 "big ticket" programs that you'd think of needing "famous" installs for - Firefox, LibreOffice, and so on. A lot of the smaller stuff is little stuff - consider DC stuff. How do I use those aggregators you mentioned to "watch for updates" to stuff like the little utilities here? For example the stuff by Skwire, Chris G, MilesAhead, they all have varying links to x versions. Then misc install copies all over elsewhere - so how does an aggregator know where to look for them?

yay geek porn!
Some of the exact tones change per speed and modem type.

I suppose it would be a little too obvious to suggest keeping a list of your current favs and customizing notes someplace - like a notebook, text file, or database?  ;)  ;D

I use Softvoile's Flashnote for this, and keep a file on each machine I use. Since it can be popped up with a hot key, it's great for impromptu jotting while still providing a standard dual-pane tree interface for whatever level of organization you feel you need to keep.

Well, beyond the text list, even better is a giant super zip of all the install files, because having to retrieve them all is half the nuisance (wait, goddammit Chris G's Unzip Snack isn't here yet either? Hehe).

But yeah eventually a list of tweaks would be nice too, it's just so much work. In a way more my style is just sitting my laptop next to the desktop machine and playing the "what's different between the two" game : )

General Software Discussion / Customizing a second (or more!) computer

I am just starting to use my laptop more. I am discovering just how many useful things I have done to my project machine over the years, so now that I am reaching for toys, I keep going "eek! that's not on here yet!"

One of these years I want to make a super batch of all the little toys I use. Today I just dug up MilesAhead's BBSS again...

: )

Random note, As much as a reminder to me as anything:

I am starting to use my laptop again, which also has XP, so I can use that as a cross-test system for the times when certain coding snacks seem to be misbehaving on my primary system.

So one of these months I'll get to that...

There's a lot of good in Notefrog.  But on a completely shallow personal level, the interfaces leave me taken aback with shock as a user and a developer.

Completely shallow, I know... but as someone who loves designing the UX, it's something I have a hard time getting past.

It reminds me of my "dark colors" phase I went through enthralled by the Matrix, Johnny Mnemonic, some alien tech from various SciFi shows, and so on. That was a time when tech felt "cool", without any of the Big Brother and Shadowrun-Corp tracking themes currently going on today. However, the button placement does look pretty erratic even by the context of those influences.

Kinda Random, kinda late. Were we doing any of that?!

Sorry, nice post, but anything at all from 2007 is meaningless in 2013!

Basicially, they can/will-try to tap anything.

More Prenda Law fun:
Motion To Delay Sanctions Against Prenda Lawyers Denied
http://yro.slashdot....renda-lawyers-denied

Slashdot's copy:

"On Friday, Paul Hansmeier, a Minnesota attorney who has been pointed to as one of the masterminds of the Prenda copyright-trolling scheme, filed an emergency motion to stay the $81,000 sanctions order while he and his colleagues could mount an appeal. Today the appeals court flatly denied his motion. Two appellate judges signed this order, and it gives Hansmeier the option to make a plea for delay with the district court judge. That would be U.S. District Judge Otis Wright, the judge who sanctioned Hansmeier in the first place. Hansmeier is also getting kicked off a case he was working on that was totally unrelated to Prenda's scheme of making copyright accusations over alleged pornography downloads.

On Friday, the 9th Circuit Commissioner ordered Hansmeier, in no uncertain terms, to withdraw a the case involving Groupon since he has been referred to the Minnesota State Bar for investigation. The commissioner has delayed Hansmeier's admission to the 9th Circuit because of Wright's order, which refers to Wright's finding of 'moral turpitude.'"

Huh. But wait, there's more...
Blogger writes about predatory publishing, is threatened with $1B suit

Or take this from the Prenda Law saga:
"Hilarious New Team Prenda Argument: Judge Wright's Order Is Irrelevant Because of Gay Marriage"
http://www.popehat.c...use-of-gay-marriage/

Now I know I really missed out on the "funniest profession" I should have studied in school - Law. But why do all those boring cases when you can threaten to sue for (pinky) One Billion Dollars and assert Gay Marriage to throw out a judicial order!

It's not every site that has its own Character Map:D

Not only does he richly deserve all the credit he gets but he also deserves our support (?).

Perhaps we should set up a Truss Fund for him?

Tie him up?!

There's a nifty thing called hyperlinks that allow people to see the entire URL without having to actually display the whole thing. (c:

"With those changes, there are no longer any web trackers on this site. I do have the Stats widget (part of the WordPress Jetpack add-in), which counts site visitors and helps me determine which posts are most popular and which search terms visitors used when coming here via search engines. It doesn’t gather any additional information about visitors, as far as I know."

Ghostery notices:
Facebook Social Graph
Twitter Button
Amazon Associates

Not sure what those are if not "web trackers".

Living Room / Re: "Half of our users block ads. Now what?"
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on May 16, 2013, 12:30 AM »
Would it increase your revenue if someone invented an application that would automatically click ads? The app could then discard the results of the click or perhaps place the results (and cookies) in some kind of browser-based sandbox.

They already exist, and I think they violate terms of the ad agreements.
