General Software Discussion / Re: 12 Windows Explorer Alternatives Compared
« Last post by Lashiec on October 16, 2006, 10:41 AM »
After reading the article slowly at home, I realized the guy gave a very quick test drive to some of the explorer alternatives. Lines like "At first glance xplorer² appears fairly average, digging deeper shows it to be a powerful File Manager" or "Having only used it for about 30 minutes total (so far), take these comments with a grain of salt" really makes you think about that possibility. Not to mention this other line "As it stands right now, I can’t pick a “winner” between Servant Salamander and Total Commander"... How come can he choose Total Commander after 30 minutes with it? Once you discover the 3rd party site, full with plugins, you almost feel overwhelmed by the power inherent in it.

Also, I would not recommend freeCommander as the budget alternative to anyone. If you don't want to spend a penny, it's way better to go with xplorer². freeCommander does not have a good design to start with, but then again, xplorer² is the one I use, so I may be a little biased :)

General Software Discussion / Re: CNET: Last hurrah for PC-based software?
« Last post by Lashiec on October 13, 2006, 05:17 AM »
Say NO to web based apps! ;D

Talking seriously, I don't want to live in a browser, perpetually connected to a big corporation server, with all my data available to every bad hacker around the block... There's market for web based apps, of course, and it's a excellent solution for certain scenarios, but for other things, I really prefer normal software as always.

Okay, so I confused foobar and musikCube wrt. source code availability. Feel free to chop my head off :)

We'll do that ;D

I see you're catching the hang of it. Good work. Maybe we can create a foobar2000 ColumnsUI configurations design group (proudly sponsored by DonationCoder.com ;D) and sweep the floor with all those cocky users showing their configuration in the Hydrogenaudio thread :D

Is Songbird a MP3 web server?? Last time I checked it was a iTunes clone with a embedded browser (thanks to Gecko and XUL). But who knows? The latest proof of concept don't work on my computer, so I was unable to check any capability >:(

What's happening lately with security software? All newer versions are giving serious problems to users. Do they test the programs thoroughly or what?

General Software Discussion / Re: My favorite software! What's yours?
« Last post by Lashiec on September 28, 2006, 06:49 AM »
My favourite ones are:

- xplorer² (I always wonder how could I live without it so much time. Indispensable)
- Opera (THE Browser. A perfect example of a good software design. It really helps on the Internet)
- foobar2000 (Hard to learn, hard to master. But no other can match its features)
- XMPlay (Or how Winamp should be. An small program with big features)
- WinRAR (The perfect compression tool. I don't think anyone could do better than this)
- jv16 PowerTools (Not only registry cleaning, but a lot of other tools who do their work better than separate programs. It's also very compact for its features)
- EDXOR (The perfect Notepad replacement)
- Wallpaper Master (Invaluable. The only thing I care about it now is how to download more wallpapers)
- Total Uninstall (The first program I install after formatting the HDD. It saves my computer life so many times than I more than thankful)
- CCleaner (Custom cleaning. That's its power)
- PSPad (Much better than Free Pascal IDE ;D)

I think that covers all.

OK, so I'm much better now. Relaxed and calm. Let's post something about foobar then.

My biggest question is whether you can easily save full configs. I mean let's say a "skin" or "template" or "config" consists of a layout, but the layout is dependent on several plugins I may not have. Can you easily package up all dependent files to share with others? I would imagine there's an easy way to share configs, but if it involves much more than equivalent Winamp skinning I can't say I'm inclined to fiddle with it. There just doesn't seem to be much real benefit.

No, it's impossible. musicmusic (ColumnsUI programmer) has something like that in his ToDo List, so maybe something is possible in the future, but for now the only way of sharing a complete foobar config is sharing the .fcs file (ColumnsUI configuration) and the same foobar2000.cfg, together with the directory containing the plugins used by that particular configuration. And I've seen that several times in Hydrogen Audio...

superboyac: can you post some info on how you have configured foobar? I used to use winamp, but after realizing that I don't care about skins and don't use visualizations these days, I've switched to foobar. Default setup seems pretty okay to me, although I wouldn't mind albumart or something :)

Look on the link I provided at the beginning at the topic. It's VERY useful for those people who want to understand how foobar works.

Of course foobar2000 is a music player geared toward users with some expertise on computers and want to make an audio player to addapt to his/her needs, and not the other way around. Things were worse before 0.8 (I started there), so don't complain too much. Also, I might add, that you have not spent too much time on foobar2000 page, superboyac. In the main page you have the "Optional Components" link, which lists some useful plugins, along with another links to the most popular components. And then you have a link to the Hydrogen Audio wiki called "User Guides", which have links to Bachi-Bouzouk excellent user guide (I wish I had something like this back then) and the tremendously useful foobar2000 0.9.x Components wiki page, which lists almost all components available for it. Months ago (before 0.9.x release) there used to be a web page containing lots of ColumnsUI configurations, but unfortunately it's now closed...

... BUT two of the most popular configurations are available in Hydrogen Audio threads. First you have Navigator Suite and then Azrael

I remember that in the old days, you have to actually wander through Hydrogen Audio to find something. And the so called "official" Third-party components page contained much less components than its Japanese counterpart (pitiful). Feel free to ask anything about foobar2000, by the way.

By the way, how do you add hyperlinks to text, like f0dder did?

My software is popular.  Problem is there are so many freeware alternatives to software that some software just doesn't work well under the shareware umbrella.

Well, I've got to admit that this is true for most of your software, except (maybe) for Cfont Pro. I can't really think of any free font manager (at least one still in development as freeware), but then again, it would be almost impossible to make a living with only a font manager as a source of income.

For $1,000 I'll tell you a little secret to make money from free software.  ;)

Getting a work at the Mozilla Foundation? Or at Sun Microsystems... ;)

Shareware should have worked, so it's strange. Maybe your software was not very popular all over the Internet... that's the main problem of shareware developers. Anyway, the new direction is more than welcome! ;D

WHOA! I planned to write a good post about what's great about foobar2000, but I'm so dense right now that I can't write anything... No, on second thought, I'm really angry, I've just received the results of the last exam I did in September and I'm really not happy with THAT results. Not to mention that the T3 used by the university (or T1, I don't know the type of connection exactly) feels like a 14,4 kbps modem. GREAT! Now I'm outrageous! I'll post something tomorrow >:(

To make the volume slider appear, do a double click on the status bar (where it says "x.xx" dB) in foobar 0.9 and above. In 0.8.x you need a plugin indeed. To learn Tagz (foobar2000 own script language), this is an excellent tutorial: http://tagz.brother-john.net/

It feels so old school that the different information in the top of the screen is directly ripped from the Metal Slug series, but the game is radically different of course. It's good enough, but for a MAME fan like me, I'll take R-Type anytime of the day ;D

I planned to get a 19" one. At first I wanted a CRT, because I had bad experiences with my friends' TFTs, but they were generic screens, and early models as well, with lots of flickering and other bad things produced by their high response time. But nowadays, things have changed a bit. I saw a 19" ViewSonic screen and it looked quite good, so I'd probably go for that one (or maybe a LG). As for the graphics card, I plan to get a Radeon X800. It's not exactly using cutting edge technology, but for my games and the different emulators I use, it's more than enough.

Hummm, I'll take a look at it when I change the computer (hopefully before Christmas), but I don't know if I have enough money for two monitors (I wanted to buy a decent computer, with ALL decent components, not like this one, with bad speakers, average soundcard...). Bah, I also can buy the 2nd monitor later :)

I have a decent chair, with good arm support. Unfortunately, the arm support is not exactly flexible and I can't sit in relaxing position when I'm doing something trivial (like posting this text ;D). I've got to change the desk to something bigger to better accommodate the computer. I also thought about the two monitor system. Does it really make a difference?

Ah! OK! A new concept. That's always a good thing, more in these days, when most games seem similar and Electronic Arts gets richer and richer by releasing "new" games which should be sold as expansions and not as new games (Think FIFA...). Would it be something groundbreaking like Warren Spector's work? :)

WOW! You have some cluttered desks around here. The most intriguing is mouser's one. So clean, both the computer and the desk... for a genious coder I was expecting something along the Enterprise and the Millennium Falcom combined ;D. And a round desk! Does it feel that comfortable? I always thought that round tables were a pain to use with computers...

Sorry I can't show you mine, but unfortunately I don't have a digital camera at hand (or a good mobile phone)...

A really big project, huh? Big like The Elder Scrolls II (playing time)? Or big like The Elder Scrolls IV (graphics :o)?
Well, time will tell.
