Living Room / Father's Day Memory of Fathers and Computers.. Your stories?
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2008, 09:47 PM »
Do you have a memory of your father and computers? Or maybe you are a father and have a story to share about you and your kids and computers?  I'd love to hear it.

I started learning how to program a computer a little over 30 years ago when as kid in 1977 my father bought a big old Cromemco Z2d (which looked exactly as it does in that picture).

The computer had no games for it, and I was desperate to play video games on it -- so my father bought me some early books on BASIC and writing basic computer games (for the kids of today you will find it hard to believe that these "games" involved no graphics or action, but were all text based; in those days game listings in basic used to be printed in magazines).  The joke in the family was always that my father deliberately bought the one computer that had no games available for it so i'd have to learn to code myself.

My father was a consistent encouragement in learning how to program for the decades that followed.  He used to give me assignements, talk with me about programs, let me stay home from school if i worked out a plan of something new to learn.  When the IBM PC came out we were on the waiting list and we used to spend hours walking to and visiting the few computer stores that were in manhattan at the time, and browsing the bookstores checking out computer books.  He was always buying great books on computer programming and encouraging me to learn new languages. that's how i discovered my love for programming.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Character Table Plug-In
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2008, 03:19 PM »
The reason it's suddenly working is because of what Tomos said -- you copied it in but FARR needs to be told to reload plugins or else be restarted.  When you opened up the plugin manager you caused it to reload the known plugins, which solved the problem.

I suspect your problem is the one described here:

I hope to have it fixed this week.

This is a really nice roundup, which focuses on profiling tools but includes a little bit of everything..

Response times, availability, and stability are vital factors to bear in mind when creating and maintaining a web application. If you’re concerned about your web pages’ speed or want to make sure you’re in tip-top shape before starting or launching a project, here’s a few useful, free tools to help you create and sustain high-performance web applications.

I’ve tried to include a wide variety of tools that are easy to use, and have tried to keep them as OS and technology-independent as possible so that everyone can find a tool or two.

Some of my favorites that i've written about on the forum before:

Seltzer maker (gift from my father) - https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5598.0

Dymo labeler (gift from my father) - https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6851.0

Cordless power tools (gift from my father) - especially the surprisingly useful cordless circular saw

Wii Fit - excercise videogame and hardware (clunky but i believe this will herald in a new era of exercise videogames; i'm tempted to explore the issue of developing such software)

General Software Discussion / Re: The LiveCD List
« Last post by mouser on June 15, 2008, 10:57 AM »
thanks for the post.  for those who don't know what a live cd is:

From wikipedia:
A Live CD or LiveCD or CD Live Distro is a computer operating system that is executed upon boot, without installation to a hard disk drive. Typically, the LiveDistro is named after the bootable medium it is stored on, such as a CD-ROM or DVD (Live CD/DVD) or a USB flash drive (Live USB).

The term "live" derives from the fact that these "distros", or software distributions, each contain a complete, functioning and operational operating system on the distribution medium. A LiveDistro does not alter the operating system or files already installed on the computer hard drive unless instructed to do so.

there's no reason searching history should be slow (you can email me at [email protected] if you want to experiment and try to get it fixed); but otherwise, use whatever program works best for you

Works fine, but it raised some questions about Licensing: There was not a Licence defined in the file or on his website, so I'm not sure if I should have done that or not?

i don't want to speak for gogogadgetscott, but given the context, and the fact that source is released with this, and the spirit of this site, it seems clear to me that it's a pure good thing to share modifications like this, and i would consider these plugins open source by default

I think basically all FARR plugins have been released as open source -- though maybe not "formally" with a license.  it's a good idea to include a clear license in them saying so.  we should choose a default license and include it with all the samples, then others will follow suit.

I think i might have fixed this launching issue for the few people who experienced it.. we shall see.

vitalyb i'll look into that.

i agree.. the solution needs to be a  background indexing and rescanning of updates which could take place behind the scenes, it's just something i havent gotten to because of core farr work.  the farrfox source code is open source c++ so if anyone feels like messing with it, please feel free :)

is your pc connected using the wifi intel card? if so that's why. it's only sniffing on the marvel card.

I'm curious to hear what gadgets and gizmos people have discovered and love.  The more unusual the better, but anything that remotely falls into this category is fine.  I've got a ton of them i'll post in a bit.

Url links and photos please!

forget about auto-adapter detection, disable that if there is any doubt, it's just a convenience.
the main thing is to set your adapter, start sniffing, and see if the packet count starts increasing in the status bar as you surf the web.

It's detecting the Marvell but not the intel.
I do not understand why Winpcap *STILL* has trouble with the intel cards.. it's been a long standing issue with winpcap and it's completely beyond me why it never gets solved, but it's out of my hands.

Really nice page Jim -- I can see why it would be hard to maintain, just because there are so many programs listed and always changes happening.  It is a very nice resource though.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: GTDTiddlyWikiPlus for FARR (alias pack)
« Last post by mouser on June 14, 2008, 01:24 AM »
I think we are going to need a mini toolbar/addressbar for html mode.  the only question is whether to let it be toggled on/off and how.  We can start collecting features you think should be on the toolbar now (addressbar for url, open in external browser, save current url in alias, font size maybe).

The idea of a command and hotkey to switch into html view and load last page is a good one.

I guess i probably need to add ability to set view size in alias as well.

I am still troubled by the idea that we are getting dangerously near the precipice of making FARR a "browser with some extras" which is not what we want.  We want FARR to be a launcher with some extras including a mini browser for specific tasks.  If people want to use a nice big browser, they should use their browser.  We don't want FARR to try to be competing with real browsers in terms of surfing features.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: GTDTiddlyWikiPlus for FARR (alias pack)
« Last post by mouser on June 13, 2008, 10:30 PM »
Just thought of a potential problem with this alias pack -- it will OVERWRITE your wiki file with new installs. Not good.
So please just use this for testing until I figure out a good fix for that.

I have added a new subdirectory to the FARR install: MyLocalData\
This will be the recommended location for all FARR alias packs (and maybe plugin options files) to store user-specific data files.
The files here will NOT be overwritten on program update but can be initialized if they dont exist (which is what was needed to make tiddlywiki work).
In the future I will add the easy ability for users to move this directory anywhere they want on their pc.

So, you can now safely use the tiddlywiki aliases without worrying about our files being erased on update.
And you can add the FARR directory MyLocalData\ to your backup jobs if you want to backup the files here (note: this may not work with VISTA yet).

on a separate matter.. it's pretty clear we need some way of saving FARR htmlview window sizes -- it's annoying for the window to be too small to display these pages properly.
