Cool!! I knew I saw that somewhere!
Thanks nite_monkey. I'll try it right away.

... Actually, the more I think about it... it could be a feature of the super "farr alt tab replacement" : could be able to change the windows titles displayed in its list ...

Here's a possible application: press alt-tab, right "bi", press "enter" and bam : the MS word "bibliography" window view (normal unfriendly name : "thesis.doc:8") of your thesis appears!

But i digress.

Thanks Darwin.

I just found the Change Caption feature you're most certainly referring to.

Available in: Actual Window Manager, Actual Window Guard.

The Change Caption action allows you changing window's caption string to one you like better.

Hint:  The Change Caption action is useful for instances where the default caption is needlessly cluttered with superfluous information you don't need to see (like program version numbers, folder paths, active database filenames, etc.) or times when you want to disguise a window's identity.

Possible triggers: Startup.

Like the quote says, the feature is either available in Actual Window Guard at $29.95 or in the whole Actual Window Manager "suite" at... $59.95 (now that's out of the question...).

let's see if somebody comes up with some other solutions...  :)

Yes. thanks Carl.
I've been encrypting already encrypted files for quite a while now and never had any corruption problems. But... As a good (pseudo) scientist, I've learned that when n=1, it's better to gather a bit more data before drawing any conclusions...
Ok. So now n=... what...4? We're getting there... :)

 ;D

I actually only got worried that using AxCrypt on a couple of already encrypted files (using one of MS Word's 2003 advanced encryption option) could potentially be harmful.... I'm not trying to hide any secret plans to hack into Mouser's computer and steel farr's source code...

I'm sure I saw a little script somewhere that can do that -- here maybe?
Does anyone knows if it exists?
(I often open multiple windows of a unique documents and if I could retitle each of them, it would be easier to switch between them rapidly, using Justice's efficient AHK "task switcher" script for farr.)
Thanks!

I see... Thank you f0dder.
(Even if I logically saw no reason why would some data corruption occur, I was more or less worried that it might happen...).

Living Room / encrypting an already encrypted file
« Last post by Armando on September 05, 2007, 02:51 AM »
Hello...
I haven't found much on that subject (encrypting -- mistakenly or not... -- an already encrypted file).
Is it something bad to avoid? I'm specifically thinking of encrypting an allready encrypted Word files with another "encrypter" (TrueCrypt, AxCrypt, whatever...).

Thanks!

Sadly, Armando the thesis writing is far from over... What this last month represents is more a last gasp for summer - I had a house full (literally!) of in-laws with whom I could not really communicate (they're all Korean) and spent a lot time on DC. I actually got a lot of PhD work done, too, but it is more planning and writing the skeleton - I still have to flesh it out. As of tomorrow, I will be teaching three classes again so will have to organise my time better. Hopefully, I'll be able to participate here as well.

Oh! I see.
Good luck with your teaching jobs. I know it's a lot of work...
I'm in a completely different situation (PhD related though). I hope to have it sorted out tomorrow. Hopefully...

thanks for posting here tom!
I'll be really happy test these apps when I have more time! I have some huge decisions to make (to leave my Ph.D. program or to... hang on patiently  ).
i'll report here, of course.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Settings backup software?
« Last post by Armando on September 05, 2007, 12:42 AM »
@ app103 : thanks for taking the time to answer.  I asked because I find that backing up and restoring registry settings are often an... "uncertain" enterprise. I've pretty much given up on it (as a routine). But of course I do see (and know...) how it can/could sometimes be practical for very specific situations (like the "takbar situation" you describe). I've now become lazy and use Acronis (and before that : Partition Magic) whenever I need to restore something...

Whoever designed the stupid registry system should be shot - resuscitated and then shot again!

humfffff.  :o Poor guy. But... Odly maybe : thanks carol.  :-*  Yes, strangely it feels good to hear you say that. I hate -- with a deeply rooted passion -- the way the registry is handled.

Even if you are happy tinkering in the registry it is really hard to back up applications settings as there is no easy way to determine what needs to be backed up.
[...]
This is one of the big headaches of the Windows System - everything gets scattered about all over the place as the programmer see fit. OK there are guidelines set out by Microsoft about what should and shouldn't be done but MS is often on of the worst culprits at breaking those guidelines - some MS apps add literally thousands of registry entries - the thought of trying to track them all down is a nightmare. Some of these registry changes (like entering serial codes and activation details) are often hidden from registry monitoring apps - and some don't even seem to use the registry at all (or files accessible to the Windows File System).

I expressed some similar views there
IMO, the registry -- if any -- should be for the OS exclusively.

With the great advancements of virtual solutions and todays more powerful machines, I agree with you guys (Josh and Carol... and Edbro?) : the best way would probably be to get rid of the old code, and start from scrtach. Yes, Mac took that risk a few years ago and it was a great move...

I don't think it would be reinventing the wheel — farr would bring features you don,t find in other task switchers (like digit keys/f# keys to launch results, search as you type, etc.). Also, of farr could replace the alt-tab feature, it would bring more coherence to the whole task management thing in windows. Why should we have to hit alt-tab and use a certain interface to switch between windows/tasks, alt-space to launch an app with yet another interface (farr), etc.? Not that it's a bad idea per se, but I like the idea of a central interface to manage windows/tasks… Dunno… seems sexier to me  ;)
Hit alt tab (or whatever) and farr appears with a list of windows, press a number and bam. Or start typing, press a number and bam. Of course, there could be options to have tasks appear in a certain order, grouped by titles, application, etc. There could be an option to give custom names to the different windows (potentially useful if you're working with several windows having similar titles)... Anyway... The usual alt-tab replacement features... + some more and farr's own special features!

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: why I dont receive reply email notifications?
« Last post by Armando on September 04, 2007, 01:10 AM »
What can also occur is : if you forget to visit a thread the first time you get a notification for it and the "receive notification for the first unread reply" option is checked, you won't receive any other notification (until you go visit the thread). THat happened to me quite a few times.

Edit : the solution is of course to uncheck "Receive reply notification only for the first unread reply." be prepared to receive quite a few emails though... :)

And of course... Congratulations to you too, Curt. No jealousy, please.
But… one must admit that Darwin's 18-19 post a day (average) for the last 3 weeks is quite something. That's more than almighty mouser's own all time average.  :P

Reading this page posts, I realized that you contributed a lot in only... three weeks (443 posts, since August 10). Most certainly, must be approaching the last miles of thesis... writing.  ;)

edit : contextualizing things a bit more...

PhilB66 : Yes... I remember trying that. I don't remember why I didn,t keep it though. Will have to take another look at it I guess...

Thanks Lanux. Well, nice one!...
A lot of useful options (some that I particularly like : sorting by title, etc.).
If it was transformed into a farr plug-in, it would benefit from farr's powerful features (and other plug-ins)...
Of course, that's probably not easily feasible.

(hope that this is the right place to post that...)

I like justice AHK script and use it often. (Thanks man!) Farr seems to me as the ideal alt-tab companion, or even replacement

As I wrote on the Switcher2: Expose Clone (Window Arranger) for Windows thread

IMO, Farr could become a full-blown task switcher (it's already been mentioned several times) which would  list all applications, the way we want it, etc., etc.. Farr being the central interface to deal with programs seems pretty logical to me. There's already the Switch To Task, an AHK script by Justice. The problem is if you don't remember the title bar name of the app. you want to switch too...
…it’s a bit problematic.

And later, in the middle of a very deep and cerebral conversation with darwin :

I agree with your comment about the resource/functionality ratio. That's why I believe that using farr as a task switcher-manager would be very appropriate. One app to rule them all...

and, even later :

by the way, Mouser... I know v2 is imminently pending, and I also know that this suggestion has been talked about in the past, but... has the "farr as an alt-tab replacement" been considered?

... :) So?

What about an "alt-tab" plug-in?
2320
Nobody's off-topic here.

I shall do that -- on my way to the FARR board.
2321
One app to rule them all...

OK, Golem, I hear you...  :P

Interresting. Never thought about the connection between Gollum and Golem. (shame on me, of course)  :)

Edit : by the way, Mouser... I know v2 is imminently pending, and I also know that this suggestion has been talked about in the past, but... has the "farr as an alt-tab replacement" been considered?
2322
In the same vein as TaskswitchXP, there is also M$' own alt-tab replacement powertoy. I've tried both and they offer similar functionality, but as always at a greater resource cost than I am willing to pay for the functionality returned...

I find TaskSwitchXP more practical and configurable than the "alt-tab replacement powertoy", but I agree with your comment about the resource/functionality ratio. That's why I believe that using farr as a task switcher-manager would be very appropriate. One app to rule them all...
2323
I find all the implementations of exposé on win XP rather clunky or too resource  hungry. So I’ve settled on TaskSwitchXP.

TaskSwitchXP is not perfect and there are some features I’d like to see in it (like to be able to permanently organize tasks by title or application -- "permanently" is a keyword here). I wrote to the developer, but it looks like he's too busy or doesn't care too much... :). Anyway, it's pretty good otherwise.

Anyway... Fear of "off-topicness" brings an end to these lucubrations...

Great Armando! I know that this is already on his to-do list, maybe your note will help promote it up the list! Your saved searches request is a great one as well, and shouldn't be too difficult to implement given that there is a history of searches available already.

He's already answered me!
Actually, he told me both items are already on his to-do list.
So, yes, lets hope they get... promoted.  :)
