Living Room / Re: Free Mousepads?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 16, 2009, 06:04 PM »
No one else uses a trackball? Besides me? I love my trackball from logitech! And before that, my microsoft trackball explorer.

I still have a logitech trackball plugged it. I hadn't actually used it for a while and then tried to use it and it didn't work. When I looked the battery had leaked nasty white gunk. A good scrape with a screwdriver and it is working fine again.

Since I started to suffer with a bit of RSI I find ringing the changes (keyboard, mouse and trackball) helps avoid a sore hand/wrist/forearm.

Yep - works fine on my keyboard.

Anyone tried installing iTunes or Quicktime in the past decade? They bundle each other.

Not totally fair comment - you can download QuickTime without any additional software.

The reason you can't download iTunes without QuickTime is that iTunes uses QuickTime as part of its functionality.

I am not commenting on the quality of either product (IMHO they both deserve to be called crapware) but I thought it only fair to set the record straight.

Having said that iTunes does indeed install a pile of crap with it - including the totally unnecessary Bonjour service and the pointless iPod nonsense for anyone who doesn't want to use the software with an iPod.

Oh no - Caddyshack!

It's a good application. Had earlier availed it through VNU. Upgrade is a bit expensive. It's normal Xara upgrade price. Gizmo could have arranged for a substantial discount on all Xara programs.

Strikes me that the upgrade price for a first purchase (and free app if you don't want to pay at all) is a pretty generous discount. They are unlikely to offer a bigger discount than the upgrade price as existing customers would also use that offer rather than the normal upgrade system.

How about VirtueMart in Joomla - easy to set up and you have all the Joomla functions available if you want them.

General Software Discussion / Re: How to upload SWF
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 14, 2009, 09:17 AM »
If you want to embed the SWF file in an HTML file and then upload it to some webspace (using FTP or similar) you just need to edit the HTML file produced by Camtasia to customise it and include any other content you want on that page, change page titles, meta tags etc. and then upload all 4 files. Don't change the file names though or you will break the embedded code (and ideally when you export the HTML from Camtasia save with a file name that has only lower case letters and no spaces). So long as the four files are in the same folder on the webserver it should work fine.

You can't do this on a website like screencast or YouTube because all they are interested in is the original SWF file - you then have to create your own HTML file and use the embed code provided by the video file host (screencast, youtube etc) within the BODY tags.

Sorry I did not understand what you wanted to do.

If you want to get it onto Screencast check out the tutorial at http://www.screencas...tutorial.aspx?id=310 This shows you which files can be played. SWF files can be uploaded and played but ther are some limitations.

The instructions I gave above are for uploading a webpage with your SMF file ready to play on normal web space - not on screencast.

To upload your SWF file to screencast you need to do the following:

1) If your SWF < 100Mb in size: Go to your screencast "My Library" page and click on the "Upload" button. Browse for the file and wait until a tick appears. That is it.

2) If your SWF file > 100Mb you need to download the tool for uploading larger files from http://www.screencast.com/tools.aspx and use that to upload your file.

After you have uploaded your SWF file it will be playable in the built in player provided it obeys the rules in the tutorial (linked above).

For future reference you might want to download Jing from the Techsmith website (see http://www.jingproject.com/).

Jing is another screen capture tool from Techsmith (and is free) which allows you to create SWF movies that can be uploaded automatically to screencast (the freature is part of Jing). It is much simpler to use than Camtasia but you can load the files it produces into Camtasia to add effects.

As I understand it Screencast was originally set up to work with Jing.

You need to upload all 4 files into the same folder on the server then point your browser at the HTML file.

I hope Baby Cody didn't get hurt when doing his aerobatics ;)

Nah, he had one or two crashes but that is the beauty of heather moorland ... lots of soft heather to land in (he is probably a bit fragrant now too!).

Unfortunately neither of them had long enough legs for the walk (and Cody needs a lot more practice flying) so they go a free ride with my friend Liz:

hitching.jpg

Hogan and Baby Cody really hit it off - here they are having a private chat by a nice little stream:

bystream.jpg

(actually they were moaning about the lack of a picnic).

Baby Cody is also making some new feathered friends:

Thanks - the village in the background of some shots is Reeth in Swaledale.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reeth and http://www.reeth.org/index.htm for more info on the place.

Baby Cody is currently staying with me and I thought I'd give you a sneak peak of what he is getting up to.

First off he arrived in a large cardboard box and I was initially concerned about the muffled complaints but was relieved to find him looking relatively happy as he climbed out of the box!

inbox.jpg

On Sunday I took Cody for a walk to see a bit of the area and his new best friend Hogan came along for the ride (together with my friend Liz).

The two friends had a good time and got up to all sorts of tricks ...

First Cody tried out his wings and landed carefully on a pole ... not to be outdone Hogan gave chase and posed for the camera ...

onpole.jpg

Then the showing off really began as Cody tried his wings at aerobatics ...

inair.jpg

Finally they just took in the view together ...

I have a few more trips and adventures planned for Baby Cody in Yorkshire but he is already wondering where to go next - anyone else in the UK like to give him a treat before he flies off to a new country? If so sign up in the United Kingdom list at https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=19293.0

« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 04, 2009, 07:05 PM »
You could install CCleaner and capture its version of Add/Remove programs under Tools (which loads a hell of a lot quicker too). Works fine for me using SnagIt so I don't see why SSC shouldn't capture it easily too.

Not sure I assume they are the same ting since they appear after you register for the free version.

Has anyone check to see whether 64 bit support is included with this offer?

« Last post by Carol Haynes on July 31, 2009, 04:41 PM »
Sorry my soultion is to use my Canon MX850 All-in-one network printer. Press scan on the machine and choose the machine on the network where you want the scans to go from a list and the application you want them to open in. Then press the green button for colour and grey button for greyscale. Just stick all you scans on one by one (or even use the sheet feeder) and press the grey/green button and when you get back to the computer they are all on screen in the application you selected.

Absolutely brilliant.

For those without such a nice setup SC will do a great job.

General Software Discussion / Re: Down with Foxit!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on July 31, 2009, 07:20 AM »
I used to use JawsPDF but have Adobe Acrobat installed (part of a suite I installed) so I use that now.

JawsPDF has now become gDoc and I haven't tried the new version of the software but given the quality of JAwsPDF I would guess the new version is worth checking out. See http://www.globalgra.../en/gdoc/gdoc-fusion

NitroPDF might be worth a visit - I used to use that one ages ago and it worked very well but they had a fairly draconian upgrade policy which I didn't like. I also found NitroPDF didn't coexist well with other PDF apps (though they may have fixed that now - it was quite a while ago).

Given that you are a registered user of Foxit have you actually contacted them directly to ask why they are behaving in such a cavalier (and stupid) manner?

Note you don't need to download this from GAOTD - you can do the following:

Go to: http://www.paragon-s...stration/db9pro.html

and regsiter (I presume this is 1 day time limited).

You get registration details by email and a login to the user area where you can download the full installer without the GAOTD wrapper.

The Paragon website gives the following compatibility information but there is some debate on GAOTD as to whether the free version actually has the 64-bit support. I can't test it because I don't have a 64 bit OS installed at the moment.

Supported Operating Systems

    * Windows Vista (32/64-bit)
    * Windows XP Professional (32/64-bit)
    * Windows XP Home
    * Windows 2000 Professional
    * For server operating systems backup see Paragon Drive Backup Server Edition

Supported Hard Drives and Removable Media

    * Parallel ATA (IDE) HDD
    * Serial ATA (SATA) HDD
    * SCSI HDD
    * All levels of SCSI, IDE and SATA RAID controllers
    * CD-R/RW
    * DVD-R/RW
    * DVD+R/RW
    * DVD+/-R (DL)
    * BD-R
    * BD-RE
    * USB 1.x/2.0 and IEEE 1394 (FireWire) devices
    * PC card storage devices

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 3.5?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on July 27, 2009, 05:50 PM »
I updated - no problems.

A few add-ons said they wouldn't work but I forced them to install and they work fine.

Auto update isn't offered but if you go to Help > Check for update it updates automatically and fine.

My only niggle with 3.5 is that if you close the last tab it closes the browser (which is a change in behaviour).

In VMWare you can boot from a recovery CD - you can also mess up the VM MBR to your hearts content and see if it restores correctly.
2325
If you just want to test this stuff why not do it in a virtual machine - the worse that can happen then is that the drive file gets killed and you can delete that!
