Living Room / Re: Caedes, the Desktop Wallpaper and Artist Community

Thanks a lot, mouser! I'm a big wallpaper collector, and this page looks great

I wouldn't say so... I think that the purpose of the animation is to make people laugh... And that sure was acomplished! ;)

Hehe, indeed ;D
2303
It's a bit old (a friend mailed me the link months ago), but I saw it again because it's truly hilarious ;D

But I agree with jgpaiva. Most of these things also happen in Spain... In fact, I would say that most of these things happen in all of Europe, defeating the purpose of the animation :D

Well, when I bought the computer I had a SIS6326 with 8 MB. Now that's ancient, and it couldn't run anything. Half-Life was very slow, even at a low resolution. The TNT2 was a gift from my brother, who replaced this card with a GeForce2 with TV-Out, for viewing movies. It surely was a change, but nowadays it's pretty old (my brother changed his computer two times since then, the last one being an impressive piece of hardware), and the most advanced games I can run are Quake 3 and Unreal... no Dreamfall for me :(
2305
Yes, but with a TNT2 M64 shaders are not supported, they weren't added so long ago :(

WOW! This is the closest thing to Ubuntu's Synaptic app. VersionTracker also had a similar software developed by themselves, but it was shareware, and sometimes VersionTracker's tracking method goes a little mad (they notify you of old updates). So how does it fare? Does the .NET Framework dependency slow things down?
2307
Yes, if you're a bit of an audiophile or a gamer, a separate card is always better. With the onboard sound chips you're playing the Russian roulette, you can have good results or you can end with a terrible sound as it happened to a couple of friends.

Living Room / Re: LangaList is merging with Windows Secrets
« Last post by Lashiec on November 06, 2006, 11:49 AM »
In the newsletter, it comes a link to a Chris Pirillo post in Lockergnome talking about the merging, with answers by Brian Livingston himself. Apparently, poor Mr. Langa was having TOO MUCH work with the newsletter, I mean, he was managing EVERYTHING all by himself (he didn't even had a service to take care of the registration...)

I too fear the situation Carol talks about... Both newsletter are full of content, and if they're aiming to make it weekly... but Mr. Livingston also mentioned that he was going to hire a full time editor to lower some amount of job

A dollar a month for the premium content shouldn't break the bank.

Maybe not yours, but mine actually is looking BAD (university expenses ;D)
And my new computer will have to wait a couple months (not to mention the shareware software I wanted to buy, and a possible DonationCoder donation). At this rate, I will become a top poster whitout even contributing a single dollar... :-[

Bump mapping? Shaders? I think my card can handle the former, but not the latter... :(

HTML + PHP. It's the combination they use in my university to teach GUI design. You could also try Visual Basic or Delphi as suggested by mouser

Looks impressive, but what are the minimum requirements? I don't want to download 100 MB for nothing, I already did that yesterday with another (bigger) game, and it didn't pass the title screen. And I don't see anything in the documentation...

Living Room / LangaList is merging with Windows Secrets
« Last post by Lashiec on November 03, 2006, 03:47 AM »
I just received the latest newsletter from Windows Secrets, with the news summarized in this topic title (which, by the way, is the subject of the newsletter ;D). This makes Windows Secrets almost the ultimate newsletter for those interested in all things Windows, and it makes me wonder how could Brian Livingston could first enroll Woody Leonhard and now Fred Langa... So what do you think? I personally feel that, although it's a good thing, I fear that most of the newsletter content will only be accessible to premium subscribers, and that normal folks will lose lots of information (as it happens now with current Windows Secrets). If this also affects Fred Langa work (that is, his tips and tricks only accessible to premium subscribers), it might be a lose situation for those subscribed to his newsletter.

Renegade, sorry, but I have absolutely no idea about what you're talking about :-[

OK, I'm dumb and blind. First, Computer Gaming World was a PC games magazine, not a console magazine :)

Second, the magazine didn't close its doors, they only changed the name. With this corrected, I'm back to ripping the whole site ;D

Songbird 0.2 continues to be the same pile of crap. Now it launches, takes years to show the screen, gives an error when it can't load the QuickTime plug-in (for what?), and that's all. I scanned my music collection, and it didn't show anything in the media library (it must be a trend, BSplayer 2's music library it's also not very reliable). I tried to play a song and... good! Nothing happened. It does not have many features, and it feels pre-alpha, it's almost in the planning stage. For now it seems like a hacked version of Firefox to make it accept VideoLAN plugins, and a bad hack, which is even worse. Heck, the preferences option is directly copied for the Firefox 1.5 one, they only changed the "Firefox" strings to "Songbird".

Of course, not everything is wrong. The GUI is well designed, and it's very slick. It looks good even on Win98, without alpha blending and in 16 bit color depth.

Personally, I feel that the only reason for releasing this so soon is the hype factor. And it worked. The new version is translated to more languages than 7-Zip, and it was featured on major Internet sites even in 'vaporware' state. That's quite a feat for such a incomplete program.

Another thing to mention is that, although some sites dubbed this one as the "iTunes killer", it's nothing near to that, as it sports more or less some of the problems currently plaguing iTunes (memory hog, lots of components, high system requirements...). Pioneers of the Inevitable had to do better if they want to release a REAL app (and not tons of hype). Now this looks as a bad Mini-Review... ;D
2316
NICE! (I'd have to say it with CAPS ;D). Pity that the archive contains magazines 'till 1989... that means no 16-bit console era, but it seems that eventually they would reach up to the final magazine. I didn't know current issue was the last. It'll be missed. Seems that this year some of the finest magazines are closing their doors.

General Software Discussion / Re: 12 Windows Explorer Alternatives Compared

Plasma Man: it would be pretty useful to have a set of criteria for comparison, indeed - and the ones you list aren't half bad.

Anyone up for doing a *real* comparison? ;)

Buff, that could be the end for the reviewer. It's a very hard task

By the way: http://www.hydrogena....php?showtopic=49526

Grrr... (That's not directed at you - long story.) Not if I get my way... I'm still hammering away for features I want at the day job. (And I've been hammering away for a long time, but it looks like I've finally made some people "see the light". Time will tell.)

Ummmm... OK? ;D

Nasty.

Again, I hope Vista fails massively. But again-again, users are sheep.

Baaaaaah! (says the sheep) ;D

Being Spanish, I say it like it should. Vista. Just plain simple. But since I don't have the slightest about pronunciation, I guess the way would be "Vee-stuh", just like Deozaan says

Yes, the natural evolution of WinZip is PowerArchiver. And it's an excellent program. Those wishing more, go for WinRAR. It's the leader without discussion, and I suspect it'll be forever, since lots of its features are not present in any other archiver nowadays.

I didn't know Corel owned winzip. :o

Well, I think it's not exactly Corel owning WinZip Computing. I mean, they actually own it, but it's due to the acquisition of Corel by this obscure company called Venture Capital. Since then, Corel has bought some important companies, like Jasc or InterVideo. Some years ago, no one would bet on WinZip being part of Corel ;D

Anyway, this detours from the main topic. Although they finally implemented RAR support, this does not make WinZip any better. Let's see how they handle the new interface design, but I don't like that higher compression for WAV files. I'm tired of WinZip implementing proprietary compression algorithms, like the ones implemented in the ZIP specification on WinZip 10

So, mouser, how much are you going to pay me for posting about DonationCoder in other forums? ;D

Or to post in DonationCoder. As long as you pay me good money I'll do it ;)

have you tried Songbird?
It's like iTunes but better support for online music, like blogs and tho..

I don't like iTunes then it doesn't fill my requirements.. So.. go foobar go!

Yep... a total failure I might say. It didn't start correctly on my computer, not to mention it needs maybe a bit too much for a music player. It may be leaner than iTunes, but not leaner than foobar2000, that's for sure. I'll give a try to 0.2, let's see how well it fares

So if you are a tabbed-browser fan, and have been disappointed with plain Firefox, you need to try Tab Mix Plus, it's just packed with cool options.

I think that in two weeks, Tab Mix Plus will be a thing of the past as most of its functions are now built into Firefox 2. I've never been a great fan of this extension anyway. My favourite one (considering that I use Firefox offline, yes, I know, it's pitiful ;D) is Launchy, which provides a new context menu to launch different programs installed on your computer. It includes a predefined set of programs (good set by the way) and you can "instruct" the extension to some more via a XML file. This way you can rid of a lot of extensions, like IEView, IETab (embedding IE engine in a Firefox tab? Brrr!) or Image Zoom, since you can launch Internet Explorer or your favourite image viewer whenever you need to.

Oh, and it doesn't have anything to do with the Find & Run Robot rival program of the same name :)
