Find And Run Robot / Re: last window id
« Last post by ewemoa on February 02, 2010, 05:37 AM »
I added support for Emacs in FarrFolders.ahk by adding the snippet:

Code: AutoIt [Select]
  1. else if f_class = Emacs
  2. {
  3.   WinActivate ahk_id %f_window_id%
  4.   Send, ^x^f
  5.   Send, %f_path%{enter}
  6. }

Both files and folders are supported -- at least they both seem to work locally.

Note: This code assumes the user hasn't changed the standard keybindings of Emacs for the find-file command.

General Software Discussion / Re: Cache My Work: reopen your Apps after reboot
« Last post by ewemoa on February 02, 2010, 02:29 AM »
you avoid rebooting your computer because it means you'll forget what you were working on. Every time I have to reboot because of some install/uninstall/patch, invariably I forget half of what I was working on because I don't remember all the docs and apps I have to reopen

Yes, I often feel this way too.

I hope this type of thing because incorporated into applications (support for restoring state -- e.g. open a file and position pointer to a particular location) and the os eventually.

BTW, lanux128 mentioned SmartClose in another thread -- perhaps it provides some similar functionality.

I'm curious (famous last words?), how many Python-using folks here use PyChecker or something like it?  I found it useful for the few things I used it for and IIRC it can point certain kinds of things out that the interpreter doesn't tell you about.

To drift a bit OT, FWIW:

For Perl, I tended to use -w and use strict, both of which helped.  (It appears there's now a Perl::Critic.)

For Javascript I used jslint.

May be there's a pattern here? ;)

well the voldemort key does not work in Farr - thank god. farr seems to be a bit more advanced:)

maybe i am too tired and don't get it. can you elaborate?

OT (and much later in time...), I guess, but here's my take -- "Voldemort" is a reference to a character from a popular book series [1], and an alias for that character is "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" (see: https://secure.wikim...ia/en/wiki/Voldemort ).  Earlier in the thread, I see the uttering:

or you can just press the i-don't-know-what-it-is-called-key right next to the alt button.

But where I'm confused (back on topic) is about the claim that the key in question doesn't work in FARR...if it's the one I think it is, it works for me...

[1] Not mentioning the series name is my attempt at recursive humor here ;)

I'm w/ epopul and azgarth -- use two of these.

and if you have young kids they will play with the ball.

I can attest to the phenomena of at least one young visitor repeatedly finding amusement in playing with the ball.  Lucky for us, the balls are large enough so that finding them is not too difficult after the visitor's departure.  (Hmm, perhaps there was an element of noticing that the user of the trackball ended up shifting their attention from the pc to the young one in question...)

Does that sound about right?

Yes.

Thanks for checking :)

I haven't thought it through much but it occurs to me that the presented idea might be adaptable to some non-git things too.  For example, perhaps it might work for Mercurial?

After watching Linus' talk on git (thank you Mark0, tinjaw) and talking with mouser, Mercurial seemed worth looking into, so...

Checked the forums here for previous mentions and below is a brief summary of some results:

now it seems to be called:

If any Mercurial users have things to add, please pitch in :)

Prompted by tinjaw's recent post, I've started watching this talk again.  I'm taking notes this time and found the following transcript to be helpful:

(Not surprisingly, I'm finding that listening / watching to the talk is more entertaining, but interfacing with the transcript takes much less time.)

On a side note, if you want to see some (lots?) of tests for a piece of Python code, Mark Pilgrim's Universal Feed Parser might be something to take a look at.

General Software Discussion / Re: djvu files?
« Last post by ewemoa on January 23, 2010, 06:16 PM »
Thanks for the suggestion.  I downloaded the plug-in and tried it out a bit.  I didn't realize that the package comes w/ DjVuViewer.exe, an executable that can be used without a web browser -- I had the opposite impression when looking at the name "Lizardtech Official DjVu Browser Plug-in" and the system requirements (IE 5 or later, Mozilla 1.0 or later-based browser).

Unfortunately, the plug-in doesn't appear to be as portable as I like (e.g. it appears to modify file associations w/o asking) and I didn't succeed in getting DjVuViewer.exe to view a djvu file when I passed the name of a djvu file to it on the command line, so ATM I think I'll be continuing to evaluate other options.

(FWIW, I didn't start w/ IrfanView -- my initial testing was w/ WinDjView and djview (in DjVuLibre).  Being able to comfortably use IrfanView might have been nice as that'd be one less thing to look after ("system administration"-wise).  Perhaps this will be some additional incentive for my brain to rewire ;) )

The original blog seems to be down but check out this pdf of the article I found online, it's a excellent brief intro the branches and merges.

Thank you for pointing this out and taking the time to increase the chances of availability

General Software Discussion / Re: djvu files?
« Last post by ewemoa on January 23, 2010, 04:06 AM »
I tried viewing djvu files with IrfanView and that's worked in my limited testing -- but I find myself pressing the space bar to try to view the next page (some how the brain hasn't rewired to work with Control + PageUp / PageDown just yet).  This, understandably, leads to the "display next file in the current directory" behavior, which makes sense, but... :(  The last viewed page doesn't appear to be remembered (at least not AFAICT) either...

I've reverted to trying WinDjView and djview -- not quite sure which I prefer just yet.

Being unfamiliar w/ Dropbox, I visited Wikipedia and found the following text:

The Dropbox client enables users to drop any file into a designated folder that is then synced to the web and to any other of the user's computers with the Dropbox client. Files in the Dropbox folder may then be shared with other Dropbox users or accessed from the web. Users may also upload files manually through a web browser.

My rough understanding of the idea being presented is (assuming you have git installed locally):

Set Up
Get Dropbox account (on their service) and client installed (on your local machine)
You now have some local folder which gets synced automatically w/ the Dropbox service
Create your git repositories within/under the folder in question (can be shared via the Dropbox service w/ other users)

Use
Use git as usual(?)

Does that sound about right?

Thanks for sharing :)

I watched a bit of the video demo.  It looks to me like if you want to automate a series of GUI tasks, you write a script that contains functions (like: switchApp, click, wait, and type) that take arguments that can be text or images.

Sample script from first video:

switchApp("System Preferences.app")
click(image of network system preference)
click(image of ethernet option)
click(image of "Using DHCP")
click(image of "Manually" from combo box / drop down)
wait(image of text field labeled "IP Address")
type("192.168.0.1\t")
type("255.255.255.0\t")
type("192,168.0.254")
click(image of "Apply" button)

Note the use of "backslash t" to tab between fields.

I guess there's a fair bit more to it than this -- there are tutorials and examples at:

Find And Run Robot / Re: can FARR be used to rename a bunch of files in a folder?

Came across this today - which could be useful: Rename Master

Thanks for mentioning this!

(I did a search of the DC forums and noticed that it had been pointed out before -- but this was before my time here :) )

I've been using ReNamer happily, but Rename Master looks worth trying.

Thanks for the code!

It seems to work fine in my limited testing of two screens :)

P.S. Using your code seems more robust than the alt-space / window menu alternative.  I tested with an Emacs window and found that it doesn't bring up a window menu in response to alt-space.  Perhaps this type of situation is rare, but I find it nice to have this alternative.

That's why I keep a "center window" hotkey in my main AHK script...for those windows that get stuck off-screen.

Nice!  Sounds like a good idea for a separate tool/script -- does it work for multi-display situations too?

Or, you can use this procedure to bring off-screen windows back.
1) Focus the window by clicking its taskbar button.
2) Press alt-space, m, down-arrow.
3) Now, without clicking your mouse at all, move the mouse around.  Your window should be stuck to the pointer and easy to retrieve.

I've tried this one before with success -- though I don't remember whether I've tried it with multiple displays.

In any case -- thanks for the tips

I experienced not seeing the ClipTrap window today even after choosing "Show ClipTrap".  It turns out that I had rotated my screen :)  A little tweaking of the ini file plus restarting the application seemed to fix things.

I don't know if it's worth trying to do anything about it, but I thought I'd mention it on the off-chance someone else ever encounters the issue.

SO: If you are an ahk coder, go to your autohotkey /Compiler folder and delete the upx.exe executable.
For reference, renaming the upx.exe executable seems to be enough.

In my case I made a duplicate of the Compiler folder with a different name (plus renaming upx.exe) and pointed the custom scripts that build my AHK executables at the Ahk2Exe.exe that lives in this folder.  That seemed to work.

So the contents of my AutoHotkey folder now look like:

  • AutoScriptWriter\
  • Compiler\
  • CompilerNoUPX\  <-- this is the new folder that contains a renamed upx.exe
  • Extras\
  • AU3_Spy.exe
  • AutoHotkey Website
  • AutoHotkey.chm
  • AutoHotkey.exe
  • license.txt

I still have the option of using upx.exe locally -- though reading f0dder's "Packing, data handling, stuff - revision 2" posted above (thanks f0dder!) I wonder if I'll ever have use for upx.exe for the sorts of things I'm likely to do.
