Living Room / Re: Change title bar name (in any application)
« Last post by Armando on September 11, 2007, 10:19 AM »
i'm looking for permanent change - i'd like to stick version numbers on all software - in all that wasted real estate - tried using ResourceHacker on Media Player Classic using String Table and it worked ok. But Metapad did not work in the same way - i realised here that the the title bar changes depending on what you are doing and suddenly it's complicated ...

I believe justice might be working on something...  :)

Armando - you have to configure WordToys via the new "toys" menu. Don't forget to click on the "save settings" button at the bottom of the menu when you're done confguring it.
The problem is that there's not even a Toy Menu!

JUst a quick update :
my bad "luck" continues.. this time with WordToys : installed it, but no new toolbar etc appears. Weird. Will have to spend more time on that one I guess.

I wonder if these problems might have to do with the fact that, at some point, I trialed OneNote 2007... Hope not, as I don't see how I could now bring my system to a "pre OneNote 2007" state.

Ditto... (well... Do you include word processors in your "text editor" category?) In my case : add PIMs. :-[

Thanks Lashiec.
I agree that Comodo is not perfect.
My experience has been better than with other FW though.
I mentionned here some problems I've had with it, and the (acceptable, IMO) workarounds.

PS : I'm intrigued by Eset's firewall too...

Also, the live preview is VERY useful.
Yes... Also... Not sure but I think that this is one reason I didn't stick to Rename Master, and why I prefer Bru and Flash renamer
2285
I think I've tried them all!

my favorites :

Bulk Rename Utility (I like BRU's UI by the way. It's just a matter of getting used to it.)
Flash Renamer (UI is more sexy, I admit)

I use both, extensively.
I usually prefer BRU (when I have to rename 1000s of files), but I enjoy Flash Renamer better for presets and the ability to save batches of complex regex renaming operations. Indispensable. (Is it only me or is it much harder to do that with BRU?)
Anyway : both are extremely powerful, quick and not too resource hungry.

Fantastic Job Darwin. Highly appreciated!

[Edit : interestingly, my post was not sent when it was supposed to be sent... Sorry if it seems out of sync  :-[ ]
Interesting debate.
If an app depends on that, it is wrong.

In my non-programmer opinion (IMNPO), only If the OS concoctors "decide" so. Right? It cannot be “wrong” a priori, but only because of some more or less arbitrary decisions. But, anyway, this does not seem to be the main problem.

The main concern, if I understand mouser's point view well enough, is that Vista is letting the user think that a specific app is "right and compatible" (behaving properly, functionally fitting...), when it (Vista) actually and secretly treats it like an outlaw,— virtualizing it and... potentially jeopardizing important user data and settings!

Things SHOULD be more transparent. I, the user, want to always know what’s happening with my data, settings, etc., if possible . The registry is already a semi-mess (app. settings are often hard to backup)… it shouldn’t become even more complicated!

Let me use an analogy - say you are an analyst and call a company to talk to their CFO. You always say to the receptionist - 'can I talk to the CFO' and she transfers you to Steve. Well after a few calls, you just get Steve's personal number (instead of his extension) and call him directly. A few years later, Steve is fired (all those millions he embezzled!). So now you can't reach him because you are not going thru the proper API (interface). However, for those people who call his extension, the company puts in place a redirect in the PABX system, so that anyone who calls Steve is actually transferred to Lisa. The same applies to his email. Steve is now virtualized.

The reason this works is that people don't want to talkt o Steve, but the CFO. And apps should also not write to hardwired locations.

I'm not sure if that is a good analogy. Having your data being virtualized (God knows where and... when!) is not the same thing as having a phone call being redirected "to the new CFO".... 1st : what kind of data would you lose in the process? If the company is well organized : none. 2nd :  I’d be very stupid if, while talking to Lisa, I’d think I’m talking to Steve… While in fact, Vista’s virtualization would try to fool me by cloning Steve and making me believe that I’m talking to the same… Steve, and even more frightening, would store what I said in a different file than usual, where  nobody can find it.

IMHO, what you’re describing seems more like a metaphore of,  I don’t know… the WINE implementation for Linux (where data is not virtualized, but where Windows API are implemented on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix.)??

Yes, Darwin, primarly Word Documents. Some xls and pdf too, but, right now, mostly doc. I'm going to take a look at WordToys. Thanks a lot for the link! I didn't know about this add-on. This could certainly be a good temporary solution. i'll post back in a few hours (1st--> have to go grab something to eat; 2nd-->going to talk with Justice about SwitchToTask and TitleChanger. He just PMed me :) )

@wreckedcarzz : yes...Switcher 2 looks nice...

unfortunately, I won't be installing Vista anytime soon.  And I'm not even sure if switcher2 would allow me switch easily between a bunch of very similar windows, even with the "search as you type" feature. If 10 windows have almost exactly the same name, except for a number (this is what happens when you create multiple windows of the same document in Word -- a very convenient feature if you're working with/on a long document and want to see several parts at once), typing a few letters, or even a number for that matter to get to the window is still... not optimal. It could be part of the solution though... if the other important part of the solution enables me to give different meaningful names to each window -- something that most titlebar/caption name changers can't seem to be able achieve in certain situations (like renaming the titlebar od multiple windows of a same document). Like I said elsewhere, right now I use justice's SwitchToTask with Farr... But I'm looking for a more complete solution.

@ PhilB66 : Thanks!

Notepad-X won't do it. WinTabber looks interesting... But I wasn't able to try it. It gives me this error : "Run-time error '429': ActiveX component can't create object." I’ll have to hunt the web a bit to see if i can find an easy solution to that one. Maybe later today!

Thanks everybody, for all these links!
Actually, Matodate is the only application I didn't know. But... it's not going to work out.
I've trialed/tried all the others in the past. They don't really solve the problem I'm talking about : switching easily between many many windows belonging to the same application AND sharing similar names.

Living Room / current tasks/windows switchers solutions
« Last post by Armando on September 07, 2007, 12:19 PM »
I’ve approached this (small but annoying) problem in this thread, and there also... Please let me approach it differently here (don't worry, Ken, I'm not trying to compete with world hunger here  ;) )…

One problem that does not seem to be very well addressed by current windows/task switchers solutions (correct me if I’m wrong!) is the difficulty to work with multiple windows (let's say more than 10) of the same application AND... with similar names.

Exposé and alike solutions work well when you only have a few pretty different windows (easily and rapidly differentiated by their colors, shapes, icons...) . But If one creates multiple new windows of the SAME document in MS Word (to work on different parts of it "at once"), or if one work on multiple spread sheets sharing similar names an content, it can be very hard to find them rapidly and to work without headaches (... especially on a small screen). Exposé, making the thumbs bigger, organizing stuff on the task bar (eg : using taskbar shuffle), etc., don't seem to really solve that problem.

IMO, one thing that could solve the problem – (for me at least) and I'm a bit repeating what I already said elsewhere -- would be to be able to rename windows as one see fit (BUT the renaming solutions that I've tried don't work in certain situations -- e.g. : multiple windows or views of the same document), and use something like farr to swiftly jump from one to another!

But maybe there are already solutions (or possible solutions) for similar problems… Anybody?

Everything loads -- slowly -- but fine.
Darwin, I think their firewall is just blocking your IP address.
Never criticize GemX or they'll do-organize (or even worse --> Wizquote) you.

BTW (Off-topic Alert! Code Red!): How's the PhD coming? I think we need to form a support network...!

[off-topic] I'm in the process of making huge decisions right now. I’m on a big grant, do well, etc. BUT I feel pretty unsatisfied. All summer, I’ve been thinking off leaving the whole PhD thing where it is and... do something else ("what" is another question).
For some reasons, I can't make up my mind. Anyway... I have to decide today or, at the latest, tomorrow.
Otherwise… Yes! A support network could be a -- eventually -- a good idea… [/off-topic]

Today is a damn busy day for me.
so I'll just say that I tried Actual Window Manager but it doesn't do what I'm trying to do better than justice's ahk script: it doesn,t work with multiple windows of the same document.

The work around I've fonud in the mean time (have to find a way : working with all these similar windows is otherwise a headache) is to assign the specific MS Word windows numbers (multiple MS word windows of the same document have the same title + a number) to specific areas of my document. Then, with justice's other great script (SwitchToTask.exe) + farr and its great new custom hotkey system, I can just type "ctrl+shift+tab", the number and… voilà. Not perfect but extremely convenient (this is gives an idea of how useful a true farr alt-tab plugin would be   …)

Hummmm.... It works, but the name won't stick if I'm renaming different windows of the same document. The script doesn't take into account specific windows handle, maybe? I wonder if it would be possible to circumvent this limitation by modifying the script...???
PS. I don't know AHK enough to do that myself...  :-[
