I #guess# a workaround would have to deal with some 'temp' folder, because the GooReader download meter will always claim it is downloading ALL of the book - even though the reader only will let you display the first 20 percentage. But the rest may of course be scrambled.

General Software Discussion / HowTo save an entire google "20% preview" book?
« Last post by Curt on May 30, 2012, 04:57 PM »
I am pursuing a subject, and need to read AND SAVE TO DESK some old Danish books, today only available via Google Books, and unfortunately only available "yellow"; meaning I can only save the first 20% ("preview") of each book. This will not do! I need all of each of them, and they are no longer for sale - I have not even been able to find used copies for sale. As far as I can see, Google Books is my only option. Have 'you' heard of a desktop ebook downloader that will bypass the 20% limit, or will/did Google maybe strangle any such?

Giveaway of the Day - free licensed software daily. SerialSafe - SerialSafe is a portable software serial/license manager.

http://www.giveawayo...eday.com/serialsafe/

SerialSafe is a portable software serial/license manager. The program allows you to store serial numbers, license numbers and license files directly into the programs database.

This allows users to keep all their sensitive software registration information in one place. The software does not require installation, thus making it portable for use on USB sticks and other portable media (even web storage).

another well respected family member is Where Is It?, now at version 2012.
$40 lifetime key. http://www.whereisit-soft.com/

WhereIsIt is an application written for Windows operating systems, and designed to help you maintain and organize a catalog of your computer media collection, including CD-ROMs and DVDs, audio CDs, diskettes, removable drives, hard drives, network drives, remote file servers, or any other present or future storage media device Windows can access as a drive.

The primary goal for WhereIsIt is to provide access to the contents of cataloged disks, even when they are not available on the system, or even they are not your own. You can browse their contents, search for files or folders you need, use imported descriptions and thumbnails, organize data using categories and flags etc

WhereIsIt can be used to handle any kind of data, including downloaded programs, magazine CD-ROMs, music collections like MP3s or audio CDs, graphics collections, document backups, etc

Do you archive/store your downloads (mainly install files)?

-yes, if it was a purchased program, or some useful hard-to-find or abandon ware.
If the register key is not too long, I will make it part of the filename,
-if it is too long for that, I will create a text file with the same filename as the installer, +txt.

for the first time in five years I have printed a DC post.  :deal:
Thank you, Paul Keith!

On a side-note your post also made me think about modern Cell/Mobile Phones and their integrated cameras and media players; their picture and sound qualities are like it was thirty or even forty years ago.
But I think that problem has been discussed elsewhere.

Found Deals and Discounts / Kingsoft Office Professional for free today
« Last post by Curt on May 23, 2012, 09:54 AM »
Kingsoft Office is fine. Really fine.
The giveaway version is "Professional"; they have no "Standard" except the always free version.

Two minor problems, though:
Notice during installation how doc and rtf cannot be separated:

And another problem is that the auto-updater is installed to Start with Windows, without asking.

But otherwise a really fine giveaway ♥

Sorry to be a party pooper but I like aero ... but then what do I know.  :-*
-Carol Haynes (May 22, 2012, 03:44 PM)

-pleased to read your post, Carol, because I was thinking the thread obviously was an exclusive ('excluding') club, so I didn't dare to post and say that I think Aero is one of the best visual improvements ever on Windows.

Judging from justice's screenshot, Win 8's design is still missing something.

The so-called 'stable' version is still version 4.5 as it was back in November. However, Dr Explain is continually being updated in >Beta versions<, yesterday to version 4.7 RC build 606.

Tomorrow (?)'s offer is the same as the previous offer: 60% off.

Found Deals and Discounts / WinOne (regular $US 20)
« Last post by Curt on May 21, 2012, 06:14 PM »
only $US4.95. That's a massive saving of $US15.00 off the normal WinOne purchase price!

The thread's original title's "WinOne ... (regular $US15.00 )" is a wrong price.
The listed normal price is $20, making the quoted saving correct.

However, either the homepage or the program has not been updated for some time:

Main features

Supported operating systems include 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP and Win32s

-or none of them! Does any one know?  :tellme:

--------------------
Interesting features includes:

WinOne® can be set as the default start up shell, replacing the Program Manager.

WinOne® is mail aware. When this feature is enabled, the message "You have new mail" will be displayed when new unread mail is waiting your mail box

SoftMaker eM Client (a component of SoftMaker Office Professional)

Contemporaneously with the release of this service pack, SoftMaker eM Client Professional is being updated to version 4.0. This new release offers completely rewritten access to Google Calendar (including Google Tasks for the first time) and is able to import PST files directly, without Microsoft Outlook installed.

To update SoftMaker eM Client, use the Help > Check for Updates command.

Version 3 didn't live for long.

-yes, it does. The problem is that there is no extra line break, so you are not seeing it. Look for the word FOLDER.

General Software Discussion / Re: Write text over the wallpaper
« Last post by Curt on May 21, 2012, 12:18 PM »
but really writing on the desktop is actually typing text on a transparent wallpaper on top of your normal wallpaper.
Can you explain the transparent wallpaper on top in detail .
I have never heard of this before

-no details. I simply read what was stated:

Because BGInfo simply writes a new desktop bitmap and exits, you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.
-technet.microsoft

I used to have it running on Vista with "normal" wallpapers at the same time. It was working very well.

But what is it that you want to type on your desktop? Five words, or a chapter, changed once in a while or almost all of the time? Is it info from you or from some program?

Come visit the ISRM exhibit 'Slide Rule' Calculators (1972-1977) the 40th Anniversary of the HP-35 at the Boulder Valley Public Library, Boulder, Colorado, during the month of May 2012.

We say, without fear of being proved wrong, that every individual who has to make calculations can, at times, use a slide rule to great advantage, and this statement applies to the commercial man. The slide rule costs but a few shillings, and takes little time to master. To refuse to investigate the potentialities of the instrument is to adopt a non-possumus attitude.
