General Software Discussion / Re: Earning the 'daemon' inside DaemonTools...
« Last post by Ath on February 13, 2012, 03:21 PM »
Hm, is that the same Daemon Tools that caused me so much compatibility trouble with all kinds of software, a few years back?

Switched to Virtual CloneDrive then and all was fine, as I'm not using the fancy 'game compatibility features' (yeah, right!) of DT anyway ;)

This has been suggested last week in this thread in the same forum.

Guess/hope it's on the todo-list :)

why?
It seems that everyone except you thinks this search for an alternative for numeric input is not a good idea ;)

General Software Discussion / Re: Zentimo/USB Safely Remove - Are they needed anymore?
« Last post by Ath on February 11, 2012, 12:09 PM »
If only the default Windows Vista and Windows 7 didn't make me confirm a totally superfluous messagebox after selecting to 'eject' the USB drive, just like Win XP only gave a toast message, I could live without USBSR! And though USBSR has a lot of overly fancy features, just that 1 single error in the standard driver keeps me installing USBSR on all systems owned by me, and the one I operate at work all day.

In case of the skinchart picture, a selection like using the lasso tool of lots of graphics editors would be the easiest way of handling that process. Then counting the pixels inside would give a percentage covered by it.
But what would that need to be compared to? Total no. of square mm, but how to relate that to the pixelcount? (like Renegade already said) You would need a confirmed measuring standard on the same photo to be able to compare, like the crime-scene photo's you see in TV series like CSI.

General Software Discussion / Re: Finding Outlook Express password
« Last post by Ath on February 11, 2012, 08:45 AM »
If you could open the registry files from that account, you could extract the (probably encrypted) password from there, put it in a new local OE-account with the same credentials and probably read the mail.
Then the NirSoft tool, mentioned above, could be used to capture the real password.

Unfortunately the easter eggs of smf don't include other nice number to word gimmicks:

i have to keep walking usb sticks back and forth to the other room
No network connection possible between those machines? Wireless perhaps? Or a NAS in your network?

Got no spare/left-over laptop/PC, sorry, but transport-cost from here would probably be higher then buying a cheap-ass new one anyway ;D

Never have suffered any data loss...
Hm, must confirm the other way around. I did have issues after copying files, and not being able to read them 5 minutes later on another PC. After waiting for the light top stop flashing, ofc.
And write-caching is in it's default Off setting in most Windows installs.

Never had these issues after using either the native Windows USB Eject stuff, or USBSR (or Zentimo during the short time I used that), so I'm sticking to the 'Better Safe then Sorry' practice, and accept losing a few seconds every time I have to eject one of my several USB drives.

Thanks!

Tried them, and they work. Though I hardly ever use frames, so currently have no use for them :-[

I've never really paid much attention to USB Safely Remove or Zentimo, but lots of people are using these programs so maybe I'm missing something.
It's become quite popular after Microsoft mutilated the USB eject stuff, that was working just fine in Windows XP, in Windows Vista, and didn't fix it with Windows 7.

General Software Discussion / Re: numerical input
« Last post by Ath on February 10, 2012, 06:02 AM »
we need ten numbers
we have ten fingers
with a device that recognizes which finger we tap (easy to implement) we can "type" numbers, as far as I can imagine, much faster, by tapping our ten fingers
Ok, step by step: :)
sit in front of your computer, with the keyboard lying in front of you
stretch all your fingers on both hands in the direction of the keyboard
move your hands over the keyboard, until your fingertops reach the number keys atop the qwerty/azerty keys
spread your fingers equally (and possibly bend a little) until all numbers have a corresponding finger over them
start thinking and typing numbers

Voila!

And if that doesn't work for you: http://www.virtual-laser-devices.com/

I'm with Stephen and mouser on this one (or rather, two :tellme:).

Both features would be Nice To Have, imho.

General Software Discussion / Re: Is WinZip still worth updating?
« Last post by Ath on February 10, 2012, 02:10 AM »
7zip is good, but the interface is mediocre
That's just a matter of taste, personally I like the bare-bones look and feel, but you can replace the toolbar images for a nicer set, if you like.

the 64-bit version does not show up in the context menu of XYplorer on Windows 7 64-bit systems
It does in Xplorer2 and Windows Explorer, so that must be a XYplorer issue :o is your XYplorer 64 bit too? If not you might need to install the 32 bit version (of 7-zip) too.

Edit: added 7-zip 32 bit note

It did actually happen, other smf 1.x installs also have shown that. Appears to be one of at least 8 easter eggs in smf ;)

One possible exception would be strictly single digit numbers if the verbal integers didn't require an "Enter" or "Plus" between digits and the keypadder did.
And even that will probably be slower, as voice recognition will take a few hundred milliseconds to process the audio.
