Not sure if this belongs here, but this was fun to watch:

Also I think it is a pita that we now assume unknown gender is female.

The picture shows a toddler with ponytails, so it's fairly unambiguous. ;)

I think it would be totally cool to have a game-like 3-D subsection to the forum, where you have to move around in a virtual world of corridors, and either the walls or columns must be clicked on to open files. As a trial concept, I envision an experimental virtual UI which exists as much for the development of the 3-D UI concept, as for a forum of random ideas. Like the original DOOM, maybe keep the pixel count low at first to counterbalance the heavier data rates and prevent stack overloads or RAM lockups. You would need a game-like layout, with users having unique visible bots. Thus, users could interact with each other in real time, as well as with the virtual environment. Like a first person shooter, but no actual shooting; more instead like academia, with dialogue balloon pop-ups over the bots. Invisible spectators might appear as anonymous glowing firefly dots which can move about freely.

What you're describing sounds like a combination of VRMLw and Second Life.

It sounds like she doesn't really know what she's doing anyway, so if the cost of buying a Chromebook for her is a bit much, she might not be any worse off with an inexpensive SBC (Raspberry Pi or Odroid) running Linux with the basics (Browser, Office Suite) installed.

I just found this 9/16" (0.5625" or ~14.3mm) punch, which might be suitable.

Seems like I'm going to spend more money trying to find the right punch than on the rest of the project combined. :(

EDIT: I ordered it. If this doesn't work out, I guess I'll be doing it manually with a paper cutter and scissors.

Found a 1/2 square hole punch on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/...0:g:1agAAOSwsN9W~gdk

True 15mm would be 19/32 or 15.0815mm which might still run afoul of the rounded edges. 1/2 inch is 12.7mm which might not be too bad, and is a "standard" size to can potentially be found as apposed to cu$tom made..
-Stoic Joker (May 07, 2016, 08:09 AM)

That particular one is 1.5 inches. :)

But yeah, I came to a similar conclusion myself this morning and decided to try a 0.5 inch hole punch. I'm pretty sure I saw one at a local craft shop in my search last week, and with rounded corners, so I'll be checking that out soon.

That said, after making some test printouts at various sizes, I personally felt 15mm was "perfect" (despite my imperfect trimming with the scissors) and that 14mm would also be sufficient, but 13mm leaves a fairly significant border around all sides of the images. I hadn't done the math yet to figure out that 0.5 inches is 12.7mm. That might be a bit too small for my liking, but you gotta do what you gotta do. . .

The alternative is to cut them all out by hand, and I'm not really looking forward to doing that with 180 or more of them.

@dr_andrus

To be fair, files (or folders) that begin with a period--AKA "dotfiles"--are generally accepted to be hidden/ignored by default. So your backup software really should be ignoring those folders instead of backing them up.

And in my opinion, it's pretty cool that everything Picasa does is non-destructive, since it makes a backup of the originals. But if that's something you weren't aware of, it can definitely be alarming to discover GB of photos you didn't know existed.

My hole punch arrived. It's labeled as being '5/8" (1.6cm)' and I believe the 16mm measurement is the accurate one, because it's just a hair too large for the dice, which are all just under 16mm3. A 15mm hole punch would probably be perfect.

It would have been nice to know before I ordered it that it was 1.6cm (the website only said it was 5/8", which is between 15mm and 16mm), but honestly I probably still would have ordered it in the hopes that it would be close enough. I just checked the listing again and it does indeed say 16mm in the description. Somehow I missed that. Oh well. That's a pity that they advertised it as 5/8" when it's actually 16mm because 5/8" is 0.625 inches which is 15.875mm which might have worked.

I'm sure you can't tell from the photos, but it's just barely large enough that it would start curling around the rounded edges of the die, which IMO means it is more likely to peel away. That said, it still might work if I make sure to coat it with Mod Podge as previously mentioned.

I'm really not sure what else to do, honestly.

Apply the stickers as originally planned, and then apply a clear/plastic coat to enhance durability.

This is a good idea. I may look into coating them all with a layer of Mod Podge to protect the designs from wear and keep the sticker from peeling off.

mouser pointed out to me in IRC that I never really explained what I'm going to use these custom dice for. They won't actually be used as dice, as they don't have any numbers on them (except the ones that use dice images) and their colors aren't particularly meaningful for any dice games that I know of.

The images are from a game I'm working on with a small team. The game has cubes which have these images on them. We're almost ready to release the game (at least for beta testing) and so I thought it would be fun to make real-life cubes like those in our game to give out to my team as a little celebration for launching our game.

Here are some screenshots of a development build showing off these cubes in-game:

I had printed out a test sheet of paper to try to get an idea of their size, so I could find a hole punch, but all the dice I put up against it showed that my images were a bit too large by a couple mm on each side. So I was concerned I'd have to redo pretty much the entire image sheet.

But my blank dice arrived today and I guess these blank dice (16mm) are a little larger than "standard" dice (12mm?), as it seems to be a pretty close match on my test sheet of paper:

Cubiq Dice Small.jpg

The images could be a few pixels smaller, but I think they're pretty good how they are, especially since the hole punch I ordered has rounded corners. But I'm not sure how big the hole punch will be on the paper, so I may need to make the images smaller anyway so I'm not cutting off a fairly significant portion of the borders.

It's possible, but I can't find any indication that KBFS is useable (writeable) on Windows sytems in any of the documentation.

Check out the following resources:

https://keybase.pub/
https://keybase.io/docs/kbfs

Short of it is that it's released to a limited few.

If you're a Keybase user on OSX or Debian/Ubuntu and want early access to try it, email me at [email protected]. Make sure to read all the notes below. Windows users will be a couple weeks behind.

Thanks. I was aware of http://keybase.pub/ but that's just a way to browse (read-only) the public folders. It looks like Windows users are out of luck for the time being on using (writing to) the Keybase filesystem. That's a pity, as it was the filesystem that I most wanted to try out.

I guess this is just another project I need to tuck away in the back of my mind and check on in a year or so to see if they've made any progress.

I installed the Keybase client. But I haven't found any information in the CLI or documentation about how to access the filesystem. Where does this stuff reside?

How did you get an account? Did you install the Keybase filesystem and request access, or did you manage to get an invite from someone?

I got a Keybase invite. Actually I haven't even tried the FS, as I was more interested in the keys discovery part, the multiple identities proofs based model in alternative to PGP Web of Trust, and the saltpack crypto.

Thanks. I installed the filesystem and requested an account about the same time I originally created this thread. I was trying to get an idea of how long the wait times were, wondering if you had requested an account about the same time I did or not. So I guess since you got an invitation, the wait time is still a mystery. :-\

If you need an invite, Deo, PM me.

OK. Thanks. :)

There is also: https://tabletopia.com/

Steam link here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/402560

The front page seems very confusing.  Is it subscription-based?  I can't find the terms or what the subscription gives you, and what's the difference between gold and silver.  Am I just missing it?

This is all I could find from the Steam listing:

The release version of Tabletopia will be free to play - we will not charge you for any game from our basic game catalog. But there will be additional options to buy advanced accounts (silver and gold) with even more features and access to the premium game catalog where you can find full games with expansions etc.

It may be that it doesn't update the count immediately.

No real reason given why they're shutting down.

Sorry to see it go. :(

Could you paint the colors, and then layer the stickers?

I guess? But that would require transparent stickers or something, or else the stickers would cover the paint.

That's what I was figuring- but you can get stickers with just the cutouts, can't you?  I just figured I'd suggest as your designs don't seem to cover the whole side when the color is taken out of the equation.

Yeah, but that seems like even more work and expenses: Buying paint and then hand-painting them. Buying extra special transparent stickers and then cutting them out in their unique shapes, etc.

Now I just need to figure out how to cut out the individual images from the sheet efficiently and accurately.
scalpel knife and steel ruler as a guide, on a sturdy backing like plywood?
^ a proper cutting mat/board will make it much easier (and wont blunt the blades so much).
http://www.amazon.co...cutting+mat+graphics

I am going to check more local crafting/hobby stores for a hole punch today, but someone pointed this one out to me online, which looks like it may just be perfect for the job since it's just slightly smaller than 16mm and has rounded corners and everything:

I've got the PDF all ready to go for the printer:

GIMP Result.png

That's at 12.5% zoom (when you click it to view it "full-size"). I've got enough for 3 sets of 13 different dice in that image, with spare room for more. I'm really going to hate myself when I have to cut all these out and apply them one by one. :'(

Paint.

That would be a decent suggestion if not for the fact that I'm not very artistic and as you can see above, the designs are a bit more complex than a simple sharpie can handle. Or at least more complex than what I can pull off with sharpies. :D
