Developer's Corner / Re: What's your *favorite* programming language and *why* ?
« Last post by Tuxman on January 26, 2010, 09:59 PM »
Without a doubt C++ because
  • it's absolutely everywhere.
  • there are libraries availible for everything.
  • compiles to native code.
  • when you start using modern C++ libraries like Boost you feel like you've truly moved away API and c-runtime coding and are actually working in a high level abstraction layer.
  • when you get into some of the really advanced template stuff like DSELs (eg phoenix2) you begin to see the amazing power of the language.
ACK.

If they lower the prices, they (probably) have a good reason for that. v10, hm. Maybe released with some serious price increasement.  :P

My major dislike in all that Adobe AIR stuff is that it looks all the same. For me, form follows function.
Thus, I use Echofon for Firefox (some reading) and TwitVim (most of my reading and writing). No registry entries (not even for uninstallation) are created, no useless GUI blingbling is contained, they don't eat too much RAM and they don't require any runtimes.

You see? - Of course every AV program has some signature failures at times, but after all avast was disappointing. Of course it might be just my personal experience.

I switched from avast! to NOD32 about a year ago, disappointed by its detection rate, its awful GUI and its false positives. I really doubt they fixed it all in v5.

Sounds like a few hundred € are needed anyway. Thank you for the details. Currently the HDD is, basically, used with one CAT5 cable and carried up- and downstairs if needed.

I don't expect super-high performance, but one Mbit/s would be fine... now technical issues are not mine.  :(

Maybe later this year. Right now it would be enough money to spend to make the HDD work fast.  :D

edit: Hmm, I thought WLAN is not that slow these days? (802.11g+)

With my current USB port (on the router), I reach about 300 KB/s.  ;D
(Via WLAN.)

OK, I presume that my router supports 100 Mbit LAN  :D ... sounds fair then. Thank you.  :)

Now these NAS adapters need to be attached to my router anyway... so we're back on USB 1.1 then, right?

Something loosely related:

I bought an external WD hard drive recently, my WLAN router only supports USB 1.1 however, so using it is a pain. What would be the cheapest way to bring the HD with USB 2.0 into my network? Is there some "USB hard disk to WLAN adapter", or should I upgrade my router? (About 100 Euros for a suitable model seems to be quite much to me.)

A new suggestion: Regex based sorting. If a file matches a certain expression, put it into $folder.

+1 for Enigmail.

Other life-saving ones:

. CompactHeader, brings back the small header pane
. External Editor, because writing long texts in Tb sucks

Also proven useful in the past:

. Mail Tweak, tweaks Thunderbird's behavior
. Manually Sort Folders, recommended for multiple accounts

Still waiting for a fix:

. Muttator, who needs a mouse?
. (Basically works but has some flaws left to fix.)

you're normally running with a user account that has write access to the files you're interested in overwriting - duh?
Now that is the server administrator's fault, right? If root uploads something he doesn't actually know into a folder where he could, theoretically, destroy a lot of things and runs the file, he is, basically, a jerk. In this case it is not of any interest, if the file is a zipped PHP or has to be unpacked via shell or anything...

For the intended use of this program (as I understand it: upgrading websites, especially pre-fab systems), it should.
Isn't that related to the files' CHMOD?

Depends. Does unzipping always overwrite files? It actually shouldn't. (So who cares about index.php?)

Unpacking a ZIP file on the server does not automatically cause any danger. How?

Injecting files is not actually dangerous yet.
