Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: change cursor depending on program
« Last post by Ath on February 28, 2012, 03:39 PM »
Found this AHK tool on thebitguru, that, with some twiddling (if you can handle AHK), could be forced into auto-switching depending on the current active executable. Without twiddling it can switch on a keypress, if some hotkey is associated with the shortcut.

Needs a scheme name to be set in the script, and probably a fix for Win7 if desired, but it could be a start.

Very cool little programming tool. And at $5, it's a steal even if you only get it to play with. 8)
I've looked at it before, but found the price at that time a bit too much. Now it's quite affordable, so I'm in :D

And what about connecting a corded mouse to an USB port and mousing away with that? 10 to 1 that your company's techsupport or the local supermarket has a free/cheap mouse laying around that you can use instead of the awkward glidepad mousing associated with laptops :tellme:

But IMHO the confirmation should be made/sent only after it's opened/read by the recipient

but then that wouldnt cover the me on my holidays scenario in the OP
But it could be in the form of a PM, so you'd receive the default notification, as usual, and can read later when away for the holidays ;)

Question:
Are you going to control the system by keyboard/mouse, or is there some kind of TV remote-control device planned?

Doubt:
When adding RAID functionality, staying around the $500 mark will be quite tricky :-\

It's just much simpler to use a single command with a switch and ...
That means a feature request is on it's way?

This is a joke right?!?

If their chopper takes off at the same speed as their website, I'd not have them any time soon, dreaded slow :(, so it must be a joke :P

What it does not have is a switch to compress each file into a separate archive.
You could do some smart batch scripting for that if needed? ;)

@tranglos, maybe you got the portable version, but I've used the installer version 8) Can only find the uninstaller exe and an ini file that doesn't hold any license related data, being dated on the install-date.

IS there a reason why the bitmap approach would be widely needed?
Copy protection?, but I'm also quite curious about the OP's answer ;)

it stores the registration info in the folder where it is installed
It's much more likely that it stores the registration in the HKLM hive of the registry, where, for most locations, Admin access is required to be able to write.

General Software Discussion / Re: ReImage: online Windows repair!
« Last post by Ath on February 20, 2012, 05:27 PM »
-no, I was just dreaming. The case is, I have a favourite program waiting for me on my abandoned XP. Now I see that the more pricey W7 versions will run XP "for free" - starting my imagination!
tomos talked about "xpmode", but I didn't understand it, until now.
The only reason xpmode is interesting is because it includes a valid license, but it should best be run in VirtualBox or VMWare solutions, not on crappy VPC as MS wants you to. In both alternate cases, it's still running on the same Windows 7 instance, and with the VirtualBox solution it's even nearly as seamless as the original VPC mode.

Oh, and the only reasons I can think of running XP are indeed old software (C++ Builder 5 required for a few old projects ) or hardware without drivers for anything past XP, but that's not going to work for any of the virtualized solutions anyway, so the only reason I had xpmode installed was to prove I could. The rest is done using VMWare, as performance with VirtualBox is not up to par.

What are the greatest benefits from two CPUs?
That you can run more then 12 cores (afaik currently the max no. of cores available in a single CPU), but if you need/have that, then Windows 7 Home Premium probably won't be your OS of choice :D

Welcome to DonationCoder, lastgasp,

so I can choose a temp folder located on the C root drive?
You can normally do that by setting the TMP (and sometimes TEMP) environment variable to the desired location (f.e. set TMP=C:\TMP), just before starting the application. A simple batchfile could be a way to do that.

Official Announcements / Re: I want to try an experiment on the site for March 2012
« Last post by Ath on February 18, 2012, 09:45 AM »
Hm, just for the experience, I'd be interested how it works out, so I'm saying yes to an experiment with ads.

Some personal experience with ads:
I've been the admin of a free forum for 3 years now. The only reason it can be free is because of the google-ads that occur on all pages that are shown. It's the consequence of using that free forum service.
I have no control over the content, frequency, size, placement etc. of those ads at all, also the consequence of choosing that free forum-hoster. If I'd want control over ads, or eventually remove them, I'd have to either buy a contract with that same service so I can continue to use the same url and forum data, or move to another hosting service and set up my own forum there and start over from scratch (I wouldn't like to throw that away, 60000+ messages and 700+ users :().
But I'd need paying/donating customers (members) to be able to pay for the hosting, and because it's a mostly 'more mature female audience' (subject is machine embroidery, Dutch language only, the estimated average age is well over 50), and it's been free from the beginning, that would probably cost me over 80 percent of the current users, so that's not an option I'd want to even consider. And I'd be forced to either close that forum down, or introduce ads to pay for it... ;)

The current ads are on the top and bottom of every page, usually pretty on-topic with the forum-content. Hey, as a 'regular visitor' I even get google-ads with that kind of content on other sites that use google-ads ;D

Current nVidia drivers usually offer this as a feature (per connected monitor), but I don't know about other drivers/ways/tools.

« Last post by Ath on February 14, 2012, 05:16 PM »
I tried this handsholding frame/mask, and I can get SSC to AV by not saving the image after applying the frame+mask combined, then deleting the image, and trying to close the frame toolbar.
But further, it seems to work mostly as intended. W7 x64 too.

« Last post by Ath on February 14, 2012, 11:56 AM »
ah yes, so i think if you just named your frame like: "HandsFrame.png"
and then named your mask: "HandsFrame.png.mask"
and put them both in Frames directory, they should get applied both at the same time.
I tried but couldn't get it to work.  Will try again later.  ...

Here the mask originally got saved as .mask.jpg. After I renamed it to .mask, as per mouser instructions, it worked like a charm

Kunkel321, thanks for this nice mask/frame combo

When saving a file with a dot/period in the filename
That is a feature of the Windows File/Save dialog, AFAIK. Not specific to fSekrit. ;)
