Living Room / Re: cost of running a pc (in the UK)?
« Last post by nudone on January 31, 2007, 02:32 AM »
yeah, that's the kind of thing i borrowed from a friend. but he'd lost the instructions so i had no idea what to do with it. you'd think it easy enough to figure it out but it made no sense to me.

he's currently trying to find the instructions so i can try again. i'd go out and buy one but they are about £20 in the UK and i'm not so sure i'm so committed to the cause to spend that much.

interesting.

maybe we can forget about the podcast and just let everyone do an impromptu live segment on one of these services, i.e. no fretting over planning, just do it when the mood takes you.

maybe complaining to the manufacturers of the dvd would lead somewhere - probably not but, at least, you'd be able to tell them they are a load of morons for making such a thing. tell them the product is defective and you want to be reimbursed not just for the dvd but for all the time you've wasted trying to get it to work.

failing that i'd get my camcorder and film myself burning the dvd and stick it on youtube - as a kind of feeble protest to the world.

Hmm... site never finished loading for me (Maxthon). I'll give it another go later on tonight. Busy getting ready to lecture on the vastness of geologic time and macroevolution...

yup, same problem here.

i'm pleased to see things have (momentarily) woken up on this thread and like Darwin and kfitting, my current thoughts really are that i need something like ACDSee and Directory Opus combined - add to that adobe bridge because i want to see adobe illustrator files as thumbnails.

my original request focused on using txt files as notes/nodes within a tree structure, i'm grateful for the suggestions and i shall try them out.

but i do have to admit that managing all types of files/folders within a explorer like program is what i really need. for those of you feeling adventurous then, like Darwin, i'd recommend you try playing around a bit with ACDSee. if you enable it to show all file types it does become a VERY powerful file explorer. thinking seriously for one moment it's almost insane how powerful it could be. you have the ability to tag, rate, comment and keyword on any file AND/OR folder. you can view the contents of several folders all at once - and you can collect disparate files/folders into a single category - like a project group i suppose.

so why am i not using it for such things? simply because it won't thumbnail illustrator files and they are what i use in my projects. so why don't i use adobe bridge in a similar way to ACDSee? well, it's slower and doesn't quite fit the task(s).

directory opus is almost there but ACDSee would offer you more in the way of tagging and viewing things. the main drawback for both of these programs is that you are unable to edit the files directly, i.e. you can't edit a txt file without opening it up with another program - the previews are simply for looking at the file. is that a such a terrible drawback, i guess it must be otherwise i'd be using either ACDSee or directory opus to do everything regarding txt file editing.

i understand there is a plugin architecture for directory opus so maybe it already has the ability to edit files - if not then someone ought to make such a thing for it.

i suppose the bottom line is that no matter what functionality a program has you'll always think of something missing. if the deficiency is something you can't help but dwell upon, so much so that you abandon the software, then it probably is time to go back to basics.

i think maybe dismissing something like ACDSee as a general file explorer may also be down to prejudice - it's hard not to simply see it as an image management program - anything more just seems wrong. even with the things i've just said above i'm still thinking to myself "i can't possibly use ACDSee as a file manager, it's just not cricket."

thanks, i'll try pspad.

i really can't make up my mind what to use. i keep trying things and then abandoning them in favour of just using a txt file. but directory opus has the advantage of being able to include folders/files in a 'collection' so i'm trying to use it as a project management system - maybe i can stick to this method.

i shall definitely give pspad a try...

firstly, i'd like to say i've given up with texnotespro. perhaps it's just my machine or perhaps i'm just doing things with the program that i shouldn't, but it seems to crash when i'm using it. mainly when i'm tempted to use the graphic functions. i suppose i can avoid trying to draw inside the program but i always think i'll try one more time - then bang, it crashes. oh well.

i'm now thinking i just need something really simply - to stop me messing about with the program. so, i have a question:

is there a note taking program that uses individual txt files as the individual notes AND has a tree structure type view so you can see all the files/notes. even more than this i'd like the program to be able to show a tree view of txt files that are in different locations on the hard drive - and the ability for it to remember this each time i run it.

i would imagine this is a pretty simple set of requirements and maybe coding editors can do this.

any suggestions, please.

edit:
i've thought of a way of doing what i requested by using directory opus. just create a 'collection' folder named 'notes' (or whatever) then just 'send to' this collection the txt files, regardless of their location.

Hey! My post didn't "make it"... Just to report, I'm seeing the same thing here running Maxthon (uses the IE engine). I don't even get the red progress bar, though, just a long beige rectangle...

me too.

i'd wait. the problem i'm thinking of is quite common so i know someone around here will be able to offer a better answer.

hang on, i've just found a sheet of paper i saved.

it was to do with "missing or corrupt ntfs.sys" error messages i was getting. so, really, that isn't related to your problem. but to be honest i can't remember if i saw any error messages or not - i just remember being unable to boot the machine.

i'd think about swapping components out to see if it's a hardware problem or take it to somewhere that will do it for you.

BUT, i've had similar problems of not being able to even get safe mode up and running and it wasn't anything to do with hardware.

i can't remember the exact reason why it happened but it was something to do with xp going a bit funny - had to run a command from a boot disk to sort it out as i remember. it's not uncommon.

someone else will better explain, i'm sure.

sorry to be of no help, maybe i shouldn't have posted.

Living Room / Re: cost of running a pc (in the UK)?
« Last post by nudone on January 28, 2007, 12:11 PM »
if you search for 'cost of running a pc' in google you'll find plenty of opinion about the expense involved - quite a few erroneous calculations too, but hey, it is physics and dat makes my bwain hurt.

rather than post links to yet more forums discussing the subject i'll just state what looks appealing/satisfying to me:

it costs about £0.35, that's thirty five pence, to run a typical pc for 24 hours. it's not a precise figure and intentionally so as you'll need to plug your machine into a meter if you want a real number - just calculating by using numbers like your psu wattage won't give you an accurate result as your psu isn't likely to be used to it's full potential.

i can't say how £0.35 translates for the rest of the world as i'm sure paying for electric doesn't have a globally fixed price.

if i find a site that's worth mentioning i'll post it here but as yet i've not found anything that didn't start to make my eyes glaze over after a few paragraphs. maybe someone else will know of one.

you may find myuninstall loads quicker if you select the menu option:

view > quick mode

from the same menu you can also select 'don't load icons' which may make it even quicker. maybe.

the 'date' in question is the one regarding time of 'install' - not the date of 'last use'. so, it doesn't look like safarp has it?

thanks for the replies. heaven knows where i thought i got the answer from before if no one seems to know much about it.

the power meter thing is something i once tried (borrowed one from a friend). just plug into into the electrical mains socket and the computer and read the meter - the problem was i couldn't understand the meter.

there have been several articles about computer power consumption in one of the UK pc magazines - they were talking about the environmental impact mainly - but i still can't find the webpage i've seen that allows you to input your pc details and then get a power (or wattage) score.

if i find anything i'll report back here as it sounds like it will be useful to others.

do any of these sort entries based on date? to me that is a must-have feature.

myuninstall sorts by date and that is exactly why i used it.

i tried to use my bed in a similar fashion to Farmy's recliner but it wasn't as sophisticated so didn't really work.

the worst thing about reclining is not having support under your arms if you are typing a lot - so you need to position the laptop or keyboard just right.

on a side note: i used to slump in an armchair whilst using the computer - did this for two or three years and i'm 99% confident that it affected my health. i suppose slumping in a chair isn't quite the same as reclining but bear it in mind - since i've stopped slumping in that chair i now don't feel so ill.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Arbitrary checkbox next to folder names
« Last post by nudone on January 27, 2007, 06:38 AM »
this isn't what you are really asking for but i use 'folder marker' http://www.foldermarker.com/ to do something similar. it isn't as quick as using a check box but being able to colour the folders does give you a quick way of referencing what you want to do. you can colour several folders at once - and, i suppose, one advantage is that you can create your own system to what the colours represent.

as an example this is what i'm currently using:

white folder = okay to delete
red folder = important

other colours denote the data inside them: light blue = images, black = downloads, etc, etc.

critical folders i've made that should never be deleted have an ! over them.

directory opus has the ability to use check boxes but it doesn't work in the tree. one thing directory opus does have are 'virtual' folders or 'collections'. this is what i use for collecting files/folders to copy to disk (or do something else to them).

a 'collection' can contain files/folders that are in separate places on the hard drive. so, the 'collection' behaves like a normal folder except that it's contents are not necessarily in one location. i find this very useful for preparing things to burn to cd - i have a 'burn to disc' collection. it's easy to send things to the collection - either through a right click 'send to' option or the usual drag/drop copy/paste methods.

when it's time to make the disc - i just open nero burning rom and drop the 'collections' contents into it. deleting the 'collection' doesn't delete the original data - unless you want it to - so, it's a very flexible way of working.

Living Room / cost of running a pc (in the UK)?

i'm sure i've asked this question before (i can't find any evidence on the forum though) about the cost of running a computer. i can't remember the answer so i have to ask again.

any ideas what the typical cost of running a computer is - doesn't have to be precise, just a good idea.

if it helps i'll describe the machine: 600w psu, amd 4800, 4 hard drives, geforce 7, several fans, audigy, 24" Lcd, adsl router.

i'm sure there was a webpage that allowed you to put the details in and it worked out the cost for you but i can't find it.

(i think f0dder may have answered this last time - maybe i dreamt it all - i think i might have even said "maybe i dreamt it all" last time too. hello, hello, am still asleep?)

well, i certainly wouldn't know what's possible but i guess as the old install of xp (the original install i've been using for just over a year) doesn't show the same weirdness as the new installad xp, i assume there isn't anything wrong with the boot sector(?). or does each partition have it's own boot sector? i don't know.

i'm going to carry on clearing the machine of all the important data that's on it and then i'll try another new xp install attempt - on the exact same partition it was on before.
