I do use LinkStash and it is the best I've seen so far. The developer John is working on a major update now. I was planning to write a review on it and I will sometimes next week. I have also used netsnippets as a bookmark manager but its limited search was a turn-off. Powermarks was another one I liked a lot, but it looks like it is abadonware now.

I have been using Powermarks for many years now. I would not say that Powermarks is abandonware.

In fact, I could almost would call it almostperfectware, which may the reason you don't find that much development at all.

But the author did release minor updates. Also, when Firefox came along, the author initially had problems getting it to work with Firefox but he managed to solve the problem and quietly created an extension that works very well.

Powermarks 3.5 Beta
"This is an update for Firefox 2.0.0.X.  We had to make changes, since our last beta release that worked with Firefox 1.5, in order for the plug-in to work with this new version.

See their beta page extract below. Please don't be put off by the word beta. Gmail has been on beta forever now and it works without problem. Likewise for Powermarks 3.5 which you will notice is dated only 5 months ago in Nov 2006.

"Powermarks 3.5 Build 387 (11/8/2006 - 812 KB)"
http://www.kaylon.com/beta/index.html

This new version of Powermarks contains a Firefox toolbar that allows Powermarks to work seamlessly with this popular browser. A user can open links in the current tab or window, a new tab, or a new window.

The process of accessing Powermarks or adding bookmarks can be easily achieved by using the Firefox toolbar buttons."
http://www.kaylon.com/beta/index.html

It has served me very well all these years and I've look looking for something out there that could possibly be better. But I have yet to find anything better.

It works with IE7 and it works with Firefox 2.0.0.3 and its search is instantaneous (which is a real killer). Love it.

Mini-Review of Print2Flash (Virtual Printer)

What is Print2Flash?

Print2Flash lets you easily convert any printable document (e.g. Microsoft Word, or Excel, or PowerPoint document Corel Draw, Autocad, you name it or whatever it is that is printable) to an Adobe ® Flash ® file (file with SWF extension). This file can be shared with users who don’t have the software that created the original document (for example, Microsoft Word). You can view such files with Adobe ® Flash ® Player that is available across a number of operating systems. And these files can be easily published on the Web as well for fast and easy access to them from anywhere across the globe.

Print2Flash generates the swf file together with the necessary html codes to post it to the web. Alternatively you could just attach the swf file to an email and the recipient can view it with the help of an swf viewer or maybe even the browser.

Screencast Video URLThere's no Screencast Video URL as usage is quite straight forward. It functions as a virtual printer.

The links below are in fact the end results produced by Print2Flash as posted on the website :

To really appreciate the power of Print2Flash, I really encourage you to play with the control buttons at the top of the flash file at each of the url below , ie the Grab button (with a Hand), the Zoom slider, the Search etc, and also the last Print2Flash Output which give an example of a lot of text mixed with some graphics at http://www.print2fla.../samples/sample2.php

Output file based on 75 by 113 mm dimensions, 96DPI and Quality at 50
Output swf was 281kb
http://www.dcmembers.com/patteo/

A slightly higher resolution version based on 100 by 150 mm dimensions, 96DPI and Quality at 80.
Output swf was 376kb
http://www.dcmembers...tteo/MaxRes100by150/

An even higher resolution version based on 150 by 225 mm dimensions, 110DPI and Quality at 60.
Output swf was 593kb
http://www.dcmembers...ghRes150by225DPI110/

So it's really up to you to play around with the 3 key settings of Output Page size dimensions, the DPI setting and the compression level of the Jpegs to get the desired file size so that the surfing experience is not too slow.

For text output, there would be not much need to compromise at all. See sample from their site.

Relationship btwn. Reviewer and Product REVIEWER: I have no link with www.print2flash.com other than as a reviewer of the software Print2flash.

Introduction :

Print2Flash - The name says it all - Print to Flash

In my last review of Fineprint https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6519.0 (wait, please don't click the link but read on), I called Fineprint a "Work of Art". And I thought it would be hard to find another piece of software shortly, that I would give this same credit.

Believe it or not, I did find one, but also one that can complement each other seamlessly (almost that is). Read on and hopefully you will understand what I mean.

Ever wanted to post a Powerpoint, Excel Spreadsheet, Text Document, or in fact anything that you could print (to a printer)  to the internet and have it easily accessible to anyone or at least almost anyone, without them having to click to download a file, or install a special reader or have access to a particular program.

What if you knew how to do that but you wanted to keep the rights to the documents (ahem, just like a museum exhibit) so that while others could view it electronically and search through it, they could not print it, or extract information from it - ie "you can see but please do not touch" if you so desired.

Additionally there's a possibility (more on this later ) that the "controlled" document could be sent via email without triggering a virus warning or blocked by a firewall.

Now you can solve all these problems if you know how to click or execute the Print command.

Of course you can do that with Printing to a PDF, but there here's another way that is really neat, much neater.

What could be easier !! but to use Print2Flash to Print To Flash.

SCREENSHOT OF APP INTERFACE HERE

Main Screen

It is from the main screen that you get to decide whether to save as Flash, or save as Html in which you get the all the Hthml codes to post to the website. This screen presents itself everytime you use Print2Flash as the default or the designated printer.

For the novice, take note that you need to remember to rename the initial default page (I shall call it default.html) to index.html (all lower case) so that the webpage will be displayed once you browse to the url that the codes are posted to the website.

Default Documents Options (You can only change the options on this screen if you register the Print2Flash in Pro mode. Otherwise, all you see is a series of "greyed-out" buttons that kind of makes you salivate.

So for US$20 more bucks, you can have extra options - you decide whether you want to spend the money on 5 or 6 more Starbucks Cappuchino.

Basic Vs Pro Comparison

Once installed, you can access it also just like you can access any installed printer through the Windows Start Menu.

Who is this app designed for:

Anyone who would like to be able to publish a document that exist in another format (such as Powerpoint or any Application that can print a document) to a webpage easily.

Anyone = Webmasters and ordinary computers users like fellow donationcoders, visitors who has any need to publish a printable document to the web and still want to retain control of the contents.

You could also distribute the generated swf via email (although you may face some issues like users being blocked by Internet Explorer)

The Good

You already got your documents in one form or another such as a Word, Txt, Spreadsheet, Powerpoint etc. And now you want post it on the web and you want to make sure they can access it without any intervention by you, and without you sweating your fingers converting or worse retyping or recreating it.

You also want them to be able to search, but not copy the contents or print it.

And you want to be able to magnify it and still have very good resolution.

Now that is certainly a tall order, unless you have Print2flash

Just convert it to Flash.

The beauty of it is that so long as they have a web browser (and who doesn't) they can read it, search it etc. And it would not be blocked by firewalls, anti-virus etc.

Theoretically, one can send the swf via email without triggering a block by an anti-virus program or firewall and then the recipient can view it offline with a standalone swf viewer. But really, I have not tested how effective this would be.

Programmatic access to the document
With the Pro version, you can also have programmatic access to the document via the API provided. This allows you to fine-tune how you would like your viewers to access the documents.

Co-existing with/Complementing Fineprint
And interestingly, you could also use Fineprint ( if you own it to enhance the output - yes you could of course use Powerpoint, Word or which ever native program the document is generated in). That is you first print to Fineprint and from Fineprint you choose Print2Flash as the Output printer.
After looking through this review, you can check out the review of Fineprint https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=6519.0

But do take note that some of the enhancements made by Fineprint does not pass through to Print2Flash correctly, such as "Angled" Watermarks and some of the graphics seems a bit pixelated and shadow text does seem out of line - But this is not the fault of Print2Flash as it is likely just the way Fineprint is designed. You may have to test them together to work out compatibility issues.

The needs improvement section

Initially, when I started testing Print2Flash 2.2.1 (which has just been superseded by Version 2.3) , I was a little surprised that the swf files were rather large. So I tweaked the properties page to adjust the DPI down and also change the page size (after all in Flash, it is rather scalable without becoming blur and distorted). But somehow, the change in settings did not take effect until I discovered that I had to make the changes to the settings through the printer applet before it will "stay as set".

After that, the files were very much smaller. In fact one file dropped from 24 MB to 333k when I set the page to 2 x 3 inch and 96DPI from a setting of A4 and I think it was 192 DPI. You have to adjust the DPI setting to achieve the desired results.

Anyway, this problem is no longer critical to me with Version 2.3 which was just release in end Mar 07 where you can control compression of the graphics although I think it would still be useful to set the DPI.

Though there's nothing wrong with Print2flash, however, it would be nice if

1. We could add our own logo and url. Currently, it only allows adding Print2flash logo and url or none at all.

2. We could allow copying/printing only of certain defined pages - now it's an all or nothing option.

3. It allowed the addition of customized actionscript to the output. For example, allow the user to add a line that restricts the swf to a particular website. So that the swf will not work if it's placed in a different website. This would be a nice addition to the Pro edition since protection of content is one of Print2Flash selling points.

4. Some additional skins for the converted documents were available.

Why I think you should use this product

This is not only a cross format converter but also a cross platform converter. That it, you can have a foolproof method to convert all printable documents into a format that easily display in a web browser (with Adobe Flash installed - and that mean literally 99% of all internet enabled computers) and of course on Macs.

How does it compare to similar apps

It's direct competitor is Flashpaper from Adobe
http://www.adobe.com...products/flashpaper/

Flashpaper also allows you to print to a PDF, but this is no real advantage as there are that many freeware application that allows you to print to PDF. And if all you want is to print to PDFs without too many options to tweak to the file to be put on the PDFs, you probably can find a free PDF printer out there.

But Print2flash Pro has several options (not available in Flashpaper) that allow you to tweak the output like removing the Print2flash logo so it would not be a distraction, disabling printing, disabling copying, Option to show search box, compressing the graphics, batch processing, API interface etc.

Arguably, printing to PDF is an alternative, but the experience is really totally different as the PDF cannot be integrated into the webpage and the downloaded PDF takes the reader always from the webpage he/she is viewing. Now that to me, is not a good idea as it can become a distraction - and you have lost the "eyeballs".

Conclusions

When all is said and done, Print2flash is another "Work of Art", just like Fineprint and they can work together reasonably well (with some exceptions). But they can work totally separately too.

I would give it a must buy for many of us here or at the very least, "must try" http://www.print2flash.com/download.php .

It may not save you physical ink like Fineprint can, but it can certainly save you lots and lots of time when you wish to use digital medium like the web to communicate with others, yet not have people easily copy and print your materials and also not be stopped by firewalls, antivirus apps, and having people install another viewer or reader (which is really a show stopper).

General Review Discussion / Re: Review Templates
« Last post by patteo on March 31, 2007, 11:30 AM »
normally you would just attach it at the bottom of the new post form, the same way you would attach an image - im not sure if it will like having swf's attach though.  if not, send me the swf from your mini review via emal and i will upload it to the site and you can just link to it.

What is puzzling me is that I believe that I have seen others post a ...swf file inline in a review. I have tried various tags without success

When I clicked the Flash icon in the editing toolbar of the forum, I get

{flash=200,200}{/flash}

But {flash=200,200}abc.swf{/flash}

Where abc.swf has been added as an attachment.

All I get is http://abc.swf

The flash file does not animate or for that matter appear.

I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

Please note that I have used {} instead of [] so that the simulated tags can be seen

I'm getting myself ready to complete another Mini-review. I was just wondering if there's another way of attaching a swf to the mini-review without having to go through the trouble of emailing Mouser and getting the link from him.

That is, how does one do it via the mini-review template ?

Has the problem now been resolved ?

Does anyone have an answer ?

General Software Discussion / Re: Software to compress large pdf files
« Last post by patteo on March 22, 2007, 03:58 AM »
Well, if you want to convert a Powerpoint to PDF, I suggest you shrink the powerpoint files first with this tool.

I tried it (shrinking the Powerpoint I mean) and it works. I did it more out of curiosity although I still retain the original which the program does.

"Batch compressing PowerPoint presentations"

PowerPoint presentations can get huge. And the culprit is usually the graphics. If your ten slide presentation is several megabytes in size, emailing and downloading this presentation will be burdensome for your users. After receiving such a PPT myself, I opened it up to find that the graphics had been imported as bitmaps. PowerPoint is not smart enough to convert them to a more efficient storage format.

The newer versions of PowerPoint have a clumsy mechanism for compressing a presentation (Microsoft: put it in the save as dialog). I expect that 99% of users don't even know it exists.

So anyway, I wanted to explore in this article a script to batch compress all of the PowerPoints in a folder and its subfolders. This was pretty easiy to accomplish in a couple hours of programming. One thing that made it easy was the use of John Cassidy's folderwalker class. My processFile function iterates the slides and then shapes. Each shape which is a picture is saved as a JPG and then reimported to the original location and z-order.

Try this script out on some of your large PPTs. There is a script flag /r which if specified will run in replace mode. Without this flag, new PPT files will be created which will have the suffix "_c" (for compressed).

downloads: compressppt.zip (4K)"

I'm not sure if Meazure will measure up to Screen Calipers.

But it's free although the author does request you to consider a donation.

On the very odd occasion that I need to measure an object on screen, I do find this quite useful.

"MeazureTM 2.0
What are the dimensions of that image? How big is this window? Does this layout fit on an NTSC display? What color are these pixels? What does this icon look like close up? How can I capture an arbitrary portion of the screen? These are just a few of the questions that kept coming up as I developed applications and web pages. Various tools are available to answer some of these questions but I could not find any that answered them all or that had a usable interface. So I created Meazure, a program that measures, magnifies and captures the screen by providing a battery of features in a cohesive user interface. Even better, Meazure is free!"

This is what I use and I agree with the assessment below.

"41 Best Free Registry Editor
I've used the full version of Resplendent Registry Editor for years and have never had any reason to look for an alternative. Recently a subscriber asked me what was the best free registry editor and that made me realize I've never looked at that particular product category. The first product I checked out was Registrar Lite [1], the free version of Resplendent Registry Editor and I'd have to say it's an impressive freebie. To start with, it works totally reliably - an essential feature for any registry editor. On top of that, the user interface is simple, the functionality excellent and, perhaps most importantly, it has a really fast search. I did, however, miss a "search and delete" option - that's unfortunately only available on the full product. That said, it leaves Regedit for dead. If you know a better free registry editor, drop me an email. NOTE:  It looks like Resplendent have pulled the Lite download page from their site. You can still get it though from various download sites including MajorGeeks [2].

Thanks Ken,

Just another thought about Dopus. One of the things that is so great about Dopus is the support community at http://resource.dopus.com/

You can get almost any questions (on Dopus) you ask and even those you did not ask (or did not even know how to ask) answered in a flash.

I mean it is really that friendly a community, almost as good as www.donationcoder.com  :D

Just a stupid question.

If you are already very happy using Directory Opus 8, would you derive any more joy using Power Desk 6 Pro.

I have found Directory Opus 8 to be an excellent File Manager, viewer etc with it extreme customisability, you can almost make it behave like Norton Commander or in fact almost any two pane file manager/viewer to ease a transition over.

I mean do you (I) really need another File Manager even if it's on offer for $1.99.

I think I need someone here to tell me how wrong I'm.

I was just kind of thinking of creating a small website to play around with and was looking at the myriad free webhosting sites available with FTP and with No Ads - there seems to be quite a few around although it may be hard to know which ones to go with.

Any suggestions.

But that is not the main thrust of this post. - I started looking around for a domain name for my website which led me to this post.

Yes, Instant Domain Search is very good.
But then maybe you should use https://instantdomainsearch.com/  instead of http://instantdomainsearch.com/

But honestly, I don't know if it's any safer - read the excerpt from :

Is Instant Domain Search stealing your ideas? | Mike The Internet Guy’s Blog
February 9th, 2007 · 74 Comments

UPDATE: INSTANT DOMAIN SEARCH IS NOT MOST LIKELY NOT STEALING YOUR IDEAS PERSONALLY. THE NAME RESEARCH IS BEING COMPROMISED SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY. THE FOLLOWING SCENARIO MAY HAPPEN THROUGH ANY DOMAIN RESEARCH TOOL. BE CAREFUL

I am working with a few associates on project for a client who is starting a new website. Part of the project is to “brand” the company which includes naming the company and acquiring a domain name. I have been using Instant Domain Search for while now as it is a quick and easy way to find available names. My associate has been using what looks to be a GoDaddy affiliate/clone that she calls Name Intelligence.

We came up with a list of names(that contained some keywords of course) and my associate checked quite a few on Monday to see if they were available. I checked through almost all the names and then some on Tuesday. We went back to purchase a few and found that most of the names we had searched for had been bought up by the same company on Wednesday(damn it). This was too weird to be a coincidence so I did a bit of research.

Here is the company that bought the domains:
Organization: Maltuzi LLC

Address: 800 West El Camino Real Suite 180 Mountain View, CA, 94040
Phone: 1.6508146730"
http://www.mikethein...-domain-name-stolen/

And now that you have read the above, don't forget my initial question about a good enough to play around with
Free Webhost with FTP and No Ads.

Any suggestions ?

I don't mean to be a wet blanket about Documeron, the following is just a general thought about downloading programs.

I have from time to time wondered how safe it is to download and install software from all over the place. The fact that it is mentioned by one of the regular donationcoders does give me some added confidence.

One of the addtional steps I take instead of downloading directly from the program sites is to look for the file in one of the more well known download sites like www.snapfiles.com, www.nonags.com www.download.com

In keeping with this "paranoid" mentality, I searched for the file at www.snapfiles.com and www.nonags.com and www.download.com, but it was not listed there.

Now of course there are many other sites like www........ that you could look from.

Just wondering, am I'm being paranoid or was it Andy Grove of Intel who said "Only the paranoid survive" or this is where Virtual PC becomes really useful.

And even with this extra cautioun, I find that periodically, I have to reinstall my Laptop to get a clean smooth running system - No thanks to Bill for having the OS full of holes.

Personally I prefer and use Thumbsplus 7.

Does anyone know of a good organizer for flash files ie .swf so that you can view it and organize and add comments to it so they can be found when you want it.

Thumbsplus has no capabilities to view flash files but it has very good viewers for a lot of graphics format.

Looks good but Pro version is quite expensive and the free/standard versions look a little limited in some ways. Going to have a play with this one though.

Carol, Try this for a discount of US$50 for the pro version. I only just started reading this thread so the discount may be too late for some. Also, I'm assuming that it works for IE too since Maxthon is IE based.

This Maxthon "Introductory" discount has been around for maybe 2 to 3 years when I first looked at but did not purchase Netsnippets.

Also I think there's no version of Easywebprint for Internet Explorer 7 since IE7 apparently solves the cut off problem. Can't tell as I seldom print from a webpage.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Can a Modify format/case Preset be set as the default
« Last post by patteo on February 27, 2007, 08:52 AM »

Take a look at Clippy (freeware)

Offers the kind of configuration I'd like CH+S to have.

Thanks for the tip rjbull and thanks Mouser for putting default preset in list of To Dos

Clippy theorectically does exactly what I was looking for.

I said theorectically because not all the options seem to work consistently. In particular, delete from column does not seem to work consistently.

It is supposed to allow you to truncate.

I was looking to use clippy to strip off non text characters and limit the amount of text I cut from a web page so I can paste it into descript.ion fields in Directory Opus. The descript.ion field has a limit of I think 402 characters.

I would use this Descript.ion field to describe a file I download off the internet so that the next time I look at the file, like maybe six months later, I don't have to wonder what and where did I get it from.

I use Copy URL + extension for Firefox to cut the details as well as URL from the download page.

Clippy, or Clipboard Help+Spell (when Mouser updates it) will work nicely with Copy URL+ extension and Descript.ion field (in Dopus) as a great team.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Can a Modify format/case Preset be set as the default
« Last post by patteo on February 26, 2007, 04:40 AM »
I though it would be useful if I can set one of the Modify format/case Preset as the automatic Modify Format/case default action to take without having to click another command or button.

For example, if would be useful to strip all linebreaks as well as " from the clipboard items.

So if I copied

"This is a test copied item "
This is the second line copied

The clipboard preview would automatically show :

This is a test copied item This is the second line copied

I took some simple movies with a digital camera and discovered that they were in mov format.

I look around for an editor to cut out some unwanted frames and the only one I thought was worth trying was Apple Quicktime Pro for US$29.99.

There's probably much better ones out there.

I only wanted to cut out a few frames and did not want to add titles etc. So I thought maybe that was an overkill.

Does anyone know of a freeware alternative to do that, preferably without having to re-encode.

Gigatribe sounds somewhat like Foldershare from Microsoft Live which is entirely free

Has anyone had any experience with Gigatribe ? or Foldershare for that matter.

I also own Foldermatch but has effectively switched over to Beyond Compare.

Beyond Compare is actively developed but Foldermatch has been at a standstill for a long time.

But to be fair, it does detail its revision history
http://www.foldermatch.com/fmhistory.htm

Besides, Beyond Compare is a much better product allowing you for example to easily see within the sub-folders (by expanding the folders) which Foldermatch does not. And that in itself is a very important feature as it is a tremendous time saver.

Personally, I prefer to use Norton Goback

It overcomes the problems that you refer to such as not protecting other partitions, data etc.

I have used it for years and it has saved my bacon countless times.
