General Software Discussion / Re: best Windows Explorer replacement
« Last post by mitzevo on August 31, 2007, 01:59 AM »
I think kalos is talking about a Windows Shell replacement, not just a file manager, although the 2 go hand in hand right..

bb4win, windowblinds, etc.

and if you are meaning file managers, then DOpus, TC, XY and x2 are some good ones to take a look at - every ones definition of best is very different ;)

Don't install as much software?  ;D

I think you are too curious, you can't expect to install all the software you want and have your OS run as it were freshly installed.. If you want to experiment with new software, have a dedicated pc for that.. that way, on your primary pc, you aren't "risking" it as much.

Or, if you still want to install all the software on your primary pc, use images - some thing like Acronis TrueImage - but this gets really task intensive, creating images after each big install, update, etc. it's a lot of maintenance.. also the other option you mentioned, was to use a virtual machine for software installations, unless your pc can handle running guest os's, I don't recommend it, just as much hassle.

one of the easiest ways to b0rk MS Windows is to install some thing.. so try not to install so much software, it's not going to all play nice together.. so the best solution I would recommend would be to use virtual machines or another computer for testing software... and keep your good pc with the known good software..

Nice but I've been using Win/TotalCommander http://www.ghisler.com/ for years (since the late 90's) and I find it superior to my needs.

787, did you even try x2? Or did you just see the "file explorer replacement / alternative" and thought you would say how good TC is? At least give x2 a try, before saying how much you like XYZ, ABC, or LMNOP, and not saying a thing about x2 - what this thread is about.

It's not a big install and won’t splatter files all over your drive like most windows apps so is easy to remove if you don't want it.

x2 is also not a big install, and also easy to remove.

Also it's free (the nag prompt at start up is nothing to complain about)

x2 has free lite version.. but, it is really free..  unlike your definition of free.

If you've been using TC since the late 90's, why don't you support the author??? I find this hard to understand, but yet you say you use an old version which is free.. this sounds kind of stupid. Sorry, but it does. You can not afford to pay for some thing as essiential (as you say for yourself) as a file manager (in your case TC).. so you use an old version.. may I ask what version you are using?

I'm sure that after surviving some 10+ years and over 25mil downloads that the developer must have gotten something out of it.

Oh c'mon... That's just like saying "oh Macdonald's is huge, im sure they wont be affected if i just steal one ice cream"

BTW, If any one else wants to shout out for the file manager they use, please try x2 first, instead of just saying "oh this XYZ is better/good/etc.", any one can do that.. and by doing that you populate this thread with general personal opinion like discussion - which is pointless.

what f0dder said, :-[

viruses are bad things; there is no good virus. if there was (which there isn't ;) ) it wouldn't be called a virus.

Living Room / Re: How do you organise your 'My Documents' folder
« Last post by mitzevo on August 27, 2007, 01:03 AM »
This stuff's highly dependent on the individual and relies so heavily on what mnemonics work best for that person.

That's damn right. One thing you have to get straight is.. am I sorting for myself? Or other people?  ;D

I also do what mouser does, that is try to keep my data/files seperate from stuff created from other programs.. for example a lot of programs put folders/files in "My Documents." It really is a pain in the ass, then you have to configure the damn program to put its stuff in another dir (that's if you can)..some programs are google apps, adobe apps, etc. I hate how they stick their shit where ever the want, as a matter of fact, that goes to any program that puts stuff where ever (right now I'm battling it out with MSN messenger c:\*.sqm files - WTF!!).  So I feel what mouser and superboyac are saying..
So I usually make a dir such as d:\myshit and have all my files there instead of the "my documents" rubbish.. and then I usually arrange by subject such as "work", "gaming" ,"personal", etc.

As for a C:\Programs dir, I instead use C:\Tools :) for programs, tools and utils that are small, old, etc.

P.S., I have also tried tag2find and tagg, although I don't use them a lot.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA:Wordpress theme creator
« Last post by mitzevo on August 18, 2007, 11:52 AM »
mouser, i doubt it.

if there is some thing like these "wordpress theme creators", they would probably be the coders/designers very own system for pumping out themes quickly..

so arunpawar, why don't you come up with some type of system, or file base, for future themes? For example, store a skeleton wordpress theme in one dir, a slightly modified one in another, etc. and make it so all you gotta do to make a new theme, is copy one dir, to the new dir name, edit a few files, and you will have a quick way of making different themes.. of course you still have to do all the designing your self for all the graphics you want, etc., and if you can't slice, then you'll have to learn :) other wise you can purchase a photshop plugin called sitegrinder - it automatically slices layouts for you..

General Software Discussion / Re: The software awards scam
« Last post by mitzevo on August 18, 2007, 02:25 AM »
hey I was thinking of this recently..

I always come across some software with a ton of "badges" or 5/4/3/etc-star-award images.. Each time I look at the "awards"/"reviews" pages of the software, I see sites or "the award givers" I have never ever seen before.. It's like they are made up just to give it some [fake] "authority"

How many award giving software sites are there???  :o

General Software Discussion / Re: Organizing Reviews
« Last post by mitzevo on August 18, 2007, 01:53 AM »
The official reviews follow these guide lines pretty much, as for the mini reviews, they are not as strict, and do not have "Exhaustive" testing methods. That's why they are called "mini-reviews", because they are for DC members to write about software which they like and/or think other people will like and find useful etc.

If you want more authority, the official reviews are what you want. It takes a lot of time to review "stuff", especially the way you have outlined above.. The official reviews have been idle for since 2004/2005, I think first of all they should be updated for 2008 (I have mentioned this many times in IRC and a few times on the forum) and then probably updated at 2010 or some thing..

 ;D or press ALT + F12 if you're a keyboard junky

I also like the preview abilities in XYplorer, such as being able to preview .psd files  :)

Living Room / Re: suffering online status anxiety
« Last post by mitzevo on August 15, 2007, 01:38 PM »
the internet is very big, there are thousands of cool communities, people out there etc.. you just have to accept that you cant and wont know every thing cool out there.. there's millions of good/awesome/what ever blogs/websites/forums/ftp dump sites/etc. just make the most of what you are apart of now.

and second of all, if you want to get a blog and become known etc, you need to start like every one else, with nothing, you keep building your site, etc.

it seems that you are just overwhelmed every one doing so much on [on the net?]

I think you are probably learning too much, too much topics/subjects, so you get over loaded and don't feel like doing *any thing*. So just pick a few things and do them.. keep doing them.. whether it be blogging, exercise, etc.

I did change the font on at 3rd boot I think it was

I've heard alot of people say that they switched from DOpus to a "smaller" or "lighter" file manager such as XYplorer and Xplorer² because DOpus had too many features or some thing..

I tried DOpus (just to have a quick look), and it's pretty nice. Clean interface, nice icons/toolbars/etc, a lot of working space and options. Of course that's just the "looks".. but it's all I can say for now.. I don't plan on using it.. but from first impressions, it's wicked.. a bit too pricey though :D - what I'm trying to say is, the GUI is streamlined, and looks good!

Xplorer², is all that I need though. For me, I feel also DOpus is too much for my needs, and x² will do just fine ;)

246
Ok - much better looking, probably the vista aspect ..  ;D but wth am I talking about.. looks.. lol, its about power! TC has a lot of power and is one of *the* best file managers for Windows.. taking that in, I'm sorry about my remarks on TC..  I obviously haven't gotten personal with it, but that was my first impression..

247
One feature that I have gotten very used to is double clicking on an empty area in a pane to take you up a dir (in that pane).. I find myself doing it every where now (not in x², places like save dialog boxes, etc.) :P (tip: turn off "full row selection" from the options, now double click any where, except on a file name, to go up a dir!)

Another cool feature is pressing CTRL + D to get all directory sizes in detail view.. very fast!

P.S., My personal taste is a bit of the mouse and a bit of the keyboard, but I'm not hard on any "way" of traversing/navigating a computer :P

Hmmmm...

Google is truly becoming the 800 lb Internet gorilla, and their business practices are no better (and often much worse) than whatever MS has been accused of.

I don't think people shoud be chanting, "cool!" Quite the opposite, I think people should be VERY wary of what Google is doing. They're reading your Gmail already (context sensitive ads) and God only knows what else.

The Google mission to "organize all the information in the world" includes YOUR information. This is VERY scary... Now that they're sticking their nose even further into your desktop should be a cause for serious concern.

I completely agree with you.. The Big G is getting even bigger. This is the turning point, 2007, google is spreading into every thing. You must be careful..  ;D

Living Room / Re: Best Free and Pay FTP Client
« Last post by mitzevo on August 15, 2007, 04:18 AM »
for best free ftp clients (Windows), I would choose FileZilla, and after that would be SmartFTP* and WinSCP..

For best pay ftp client, I choose FlashFXP (but doesn;t suppport SFTP..) out of all the top players (CuteFTP, WS_FTP, etc. etc.)

FlashFXP has a good site manager (some thing FileZilla lacks; password protecting your sites, etc.), nice GUI, good features for most FTP sessions, and the price tag: $25, free upgrades  8)

edit: FlashFXP price was $5 short  ;D
edit 2: SmartFTP no longer offers the free version :(

Ok so I am now back with FileZilla again, this time with out the GUI comments  :P I like it now that I have used it more than 3 times.. :)

What about WinSCP?

Both FileZilla and WinSCP have SFTP support, some thing which FlashFXP does not have (my fav+ ftp client right now..)

Edit: Actually WinSCP is pretty cool, a nice GUI, lot of functions, even Putty integrated.. I think I like it over FileZilla :D
