The YouTube videos of Amiga were my introduction to Commodore a few years ago. Had a couple of buddies who were still using and programming their Amiga systems through 1995!

Katie Fehrenbacher has an excellent article on GigaOM today, When good tech ideas go bad:

Sometimes tech trends end up disrupting huge industries, like when the idea of Skype and free web calls, collided with the phone companies. However, sometimes tech ideas have all the makings of these kind of disruptions — complete with collective billions of dollars of venture capital funding, dozens of startup competitors, and enthusiastic analyst predictions — but ultimately end up flaming out because of things like timing, macroeconomic conditions, or fatal business model flaws.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google+ Extensions thread

You might be right. I don't have Flash installed on my Linux system for that very reason -- idiots were building entire websites of Flash and it will bring the entire browser to a halt. Wasn't worth the few videos I miss here and there. Convert them to HTML5 or not, I won't go back to Flash.

Could be because of its beta-ish state, but here Google+ is  s - l - o - w.
Am I the only one experiencing that slowness ?

Not sure, but there's no good reason it should be slow in your part of Canada. Are you using Chrome browser or another browser?

Stream+ for Google+
http://stream-plus.appspot.com/

The following experiment is just a proof of concept of how to use the Google+ API. Built over the hangout, developed by +Mohamed Mansour.
Once you log in, it will fetch all your public posts on your stream and classifies each item in a topic. Later on you can view all your topics on the left and all the documents that are similar to that topic on the right. So far, the API looks solid, this was built without knowing AppEngine or OAuth. Props to the AppEngine team, you guys really did something so easy. I am in love with the Eclipse IDE integration. Very easy, took me minutes to learn it. I just used the examples online given by the Google+ team and hacked away with the API. I am really impressed regarding the simplicity of the API. The core logic and algorithms were completed in around 3 hours while the remaining of the time was tweaking the UI to make the experience better.

General Software Discussion / Googles argues why software patents are irrelevant
« Last post by zridling on September 12, 2011, 05:50 AM »
Interesting argument if it sticks:
http://www.courthous...2011/09/09/39677.htm

MP1f4.jpg

Google said its workers made Android binary and source codes available for download to foreign manufacturers, and neither code is available in any physical medium. The manufacturers then downloaded the codes, which "necessarily involves copying it - otherwise the code would disappear from the website after the first download," according to the brief. "Thus, foreign device manufacturers have to copy Android code before loading it onto their devices."

Google stressed the similarities between its case and Microsoft v. AT&T. The Supreme Court had reasoned that, because Microsoft "does not export from the United States the copies actually installed, it does not 'suppl[y] ... from the United States' 'components' of the relevant computers, and therefore is not liable" for patent infringement, the brief states. Van Nest, a partner with Keker & Van Nest in San Francisco, further argued that Android software remains an "idea without physical embodiment" and not a "combinable" component of a device until it is "expressed as a computer-readable copy."

Stream Filter BETA for Google Plus
https://chrome.googl...fgmhdliiamgmaameooog

A plugin that filters in and out specific keywords that you can customize in the options screen -- nice for the kids or for checking in at work. It also remembers the filtered posts that are accessible in the popup from the icon appearing next to the wrench button. (Make sure to select auto-refresh.)

Governments and the corporations that fund them are doing everything they can to erase anonymity on the net. Not merely for the purpose of computer forensics and prosecution, but to sell you more stuff.

For the first, you're basically 1 step away from prison as with the number of laws now, everyone is a "criminal", or can be turned into one with a few twisted words.

It's true with the cellphone. And when the cops search your place, they usually take your computers and make copies of the HDs. "Anything you have on your HD can and will be used against you," so to speak. (At least if you're a suspect.) As for the second part, some folks think Google is about search....

^Sorry to disappoint. But zridling and 40hz are serious and unapologetic Linux users.

Indeed. And just like any other software, among distros, I have a number of niggling gripes. But the modularity and scalability of the kernel is good to us all.

Living Room / G-Male -- Google's creepy, perfect boyfriend
« Last post by zridling on August 30, 2011, 11:42 PM »

Imagine if Google was your boyfriend: G-male (you can imagine the same for a girlfriend). It would be amazing: such a great listener, he would answer your every need, the perfect boyfriend!

Oh wait, he would also know your every secret, would tell you what you need, what you should do...

Watch this 3 mn video, it's one of the most amazing videos I've watched so far about Google. And it's hilarious (and very scary, too).

How can we give you everything you need if we don't listen to everything you say?
Google: We are very good listeners...

Living Room / Even the best of us burnout on the things we love doing

stressed-woman-computer-l.jpg

Even when you do something because you love doing it, it doesn't mean that you can't burnout on it. Open source developers talk about the stress of coding in the Linux world.

"Hang around the free and open source software community for any length of time, and you can't help seeing examples of burnout. A colleague takes on too much, and suddenly they're working harder for fewer results. They have a hard time concentrating on their work. They neglect their personal life. When challenged, they become defense and unusually hostile. Eventually, they withdraw -- and, sometimes, they don't come back."
