General Software Discussion / Re: Acronis Backup
« Last post by techidave on December 23, 2012, 01:34 PM »
Our school has been using Symantec Ghost Corporate Edition for several years now.  it works but is extremely expensive so I am always on the look out for something cheaper.

I tried setting up FOG this past summer but we could never get it to run.  I don't remember details now.

So I am looking for something else too.  Needs to run from a network and also work with PXE boot.

I am with 40hz on the Ning sites.  Last week, I joined a work related Ning site sponsored by our state board of education.  its horrible to find stuff.

The search part of the forum doesnt work for me most of the time.  So I use Google as well.

I tend to look only at the Living Room and General Software discussion boards the most.  Occasionally the Coding Snacks, I am sure that I miss a few things in the other boards. I always click the show unread posts since last visit.

Speaking as a non coder and as an average to above average user, its sometimes hard to know which board to post to.

I came here for two things.  A google search showed me a discussion on software or hardware help or about some fancy little coding snack.  Probably FARR or Screenshot Captor.

I tend not to do the chat part here since that would tie up all my time that I could be doing something useful.  :D  but maybe that parts also needs updated?  :-\

I change the hose on my vacum sweeper to the other spot so that it blows instead of sucks.  Even if you put an attachment on it, the pressure won't be all that great since the hose size is large.  Blows dry air too.

I also use it to blow out the inside of the computer.

Miles, you should go into advertising!

That would make a great commercial!  :)

I use the KeepVid bookmarklet and it works really well.  Never had an issue with it and it cuts out the ads for me as well.

keepvid and in the upper right corner of the page it will let you drag it to your browser.

so this morning I went looking for a drawing tool and after several attempts I found this one.  Here, which wasn't really designed for how I am using it.  But it fits the needs perfectly and was quick and easy!   :) 8)

and it only took me 10 minutes to do it!  Now that's what I am talking about.  I am attaching my project which is very basic and doesn't need dimensions or doors or anything like that.    :D

Me neither rgdot.  And I am still looking. I think one of my schools has an old copy of solid works that I may see if I can find.  Figuring an older version might be simpler to use.

I have also tried using Excel, floorplanner, and am currently on smart draw which isn't free but is about as close to what I want that I have found.  I also looked at tigercad but it had some quirks that I couldn't get past.

General Software Discussion / need to create a basic floor plan
« Last post by techidave on December 01, 2012, 10:19 AM »
I am looking to create a very basic floor plan of our school to use as a "map" of the rooms.  All I think that I need is something that will allow me to create a square, rectangle, and lines.  Also an eraser and to put in text.  I have tried Dia, Sketchup 8, but they are too complicated or too quirky for me, :(  Draft IT won't run on my W7 box.  an online solution would also work.  Something free would be nice.

any suggestions?

Living Room / Re: Exchange E-Mail hosting recommendation needed
« Last post by techidave on November 29, 2012, 09:19 PM »
Our school switched this past summer to Office 365 for Education, which the basic Exchange Online is free for them.  25 gb storage for each mailbox.  it was a pain to get the mailboxes copied over but we have been satisfied since then.  I didn't do the setup on it but was there watching the other guy do it.

We had a 12 year old Dell server that had one bad hard drive and one bad power supply in it.  Glad it waited until we were done with the switch before they went.

It has good junk mail detection, webmail is good and we can also use Outlook with it.

seems like I inquired about him way back when.  Was told more or less if memory serves me correctly that he didn't have time anymore.  I don't remember if there was a job change or what.

I am sure Mouser could enlighten us... inquiring minds want to know!

file copying is not one of those things that I have ever thought to "experiment" with.  Usually when I need to copy, I need to copy stuff.  but I have tried TerraCopy and some others but that was to get around Windows stopping the copying procedure because something hiccuped.   :(

I do wish MS would fix that.

Ath, are you sure the "replace" leaves all files from both folders there?  I thought it would overwrite the first folder with the files from the second folder.  But I have never checked it out.

Well things are looking up.  After a good ol' fashion shutdown and turn back on, things are finally working.

Guess I panicked too soon.

thanks for the help!
