I've noticed we've gained in the neighborhood of 20+ new members just in the past 24 hours.  Is this a normal rate, or are we enjoying an unusual influx?

Welcome, all you newcomers!

Very well!  Version 1.0.3.6 is available, and changes PDF format to CHM for Help file.  Thanks for the feedback.

N.A.N.Y. 2012 / NANY 2012 Idea Suggestion: Improvement upon SizeFrame
« Last post by kyrathaba on July 01, 2011, 08:01 PM »
There is a freeware VB6 application by Alex Vallat called SizeFrame, which can be used when designing user interfaces that are to be used at resolutions smaller than those of the system on which they are designed. Rather than having to change the screen resolution this utility simply displays a rectangluar frame of the appropriate size which can be moved around the screen to check what will fit inside it. A drop down list allows you to change the size of the frame to any of the standard resolutions between 640x480 and 1280x1024.

My challenge is for someone to develop a more flexible version of the program.  For example, the resolutions in SizeFrame are hard-coded in the executable.  Why not have the resolution dependent upon the user's input?  I'm sure you can think of other enhancements.

I'm using HelpNDoc to generate my PDF help file.  Do you guys prefer PDF as the help file format, or would CHM be preferable?

Because CHM compresses the internal HTML, its file size is smaller than the corresponding PDF, but I wondered if CHM is natively supported by all versions of Windows, whereas I know that PDF support is nearly ubiquitous.  Can't remember the last time I found a system that didn't have some sort of PDF reader software installed.

Application version 1035 has been released.  It fixes a bug introduced by the previous version, and now shows # of program runs in About box.  The number of program executions is not reset when you update to a later version, because this data is stored in AppData rather than the C:\Program Files\... application directory.  So, the number of program executions shown reflects the number of executions since the very first version of the program the user installed (note that the yellow highlighting shown in the second screen-shot is for the purpose of this post only, and doesn't appear in the actual running program):

I've updated the PDF help to elaborate a bit more on the newest option.  It'll automatically be included in v1035.  For those currently using v1034, I've attached it.  It should be placed in the application's directory, wherever you installed it (by default, C:\Program Files(x86)\Kyrathasoft\KyrHangman).

Mouser,

I'm kinda getting stoked about this idea.  I've long wanted software that would allow me to create my own card games that could be played across a network.  Like many people, I was once heavily into the "Magic: The Gathering" card game, and just loved the permutations and strategies that came into play.  I'd love to have something that could enable me to create a similar game, but with my own unique rules set.

Fantastic!

Complete polishing optional for submission by 12/07 deadline; mandatory by New Year :D
2246
I know there have been some attempts at this before (done mostly in Java), but I've yet to find one that doesn't seem buggy or off-puttingly complex:

I'd like an application (desktop or online) that let's me develop a set of cards, complete with artwork, flavor text, and rules about how each card functions.

If multiple people have access to the app, they can play via internet access.

The most important requirement of this app would be (1) a non off-putting learning curve and (2) a scripting feature to implement rules sets for games, (3) it should implement a way to "win" collectible cards if the particular game is a CTCG.

This is probably pushing the envelope of proper NANY scope, but we've got 6 months, and it doesn't have to be completely polished by the Dec 7th submission deadline, just functional.

Version 1.0.3.4 is out.  I've addressed a request made by a couple of people: now you have the option to compete only against yourself (the program will submit a score if it beats your own previous scores) or against everyone registered to your application instance (all user-names that've played the game on a particular computer).  The default is to compete against yourself:

hangOptions.png

The inline Help pdf addresses this option.

If you've already installed the program, you need only update it using "Help"->"Update".

This version also addresses a small cosmetic "bug" in previous versions (which others may not have noticed, but which caught my eye).  While the splash screen is showing, there is no longer a funky taskbar icon related to it.

Yes, I really like the Thermaltake BlacX Duet SATA.  Very sharp.  But I don't think it'd work with my old drive, which is IDE.

If they just added in a 6-port USB hub it would be the perfect addition to a technician's field kit.
