The .me registry is operated by doMEn ...

Do me in?

Sounds vaguely sinister  :P

DirectNetDrive - works OK, can read/write  you get a progressbar down near the systray whenever something happening, (WebDAV, SFTP, and FTP).  Free for personal use.

I'd still go with the VPN + UNC myself ... as a bonus it requires no mapping of drives as long as the programs understand UNC - and they should unless they're old or very poorly programmed.  ;)
2228
You might be out of luck, I couldn't get it to create a folder, nor could I copy something to it - I wonder if it was a permission thing at the other end?

Would it not be better to connect to an office VPN when they're out roaming and then use UNC addressing?

Have you managed to get t to work?

I installed it, it worked ... it was that simple.

UAC did pop up asking if it was OK to install but that was about it.

Living Room / Re: Do any wifi-DIRECT adapters actually exist?
« Last post by 4wd on November 15, 2014, 11:23 PM »
I thought Ad-Hoc is peer-to-peer when communicating but the actual Ad-Hoc network size, (in device numbers), is only limited by the environment interfering with device communication.
2231
Not the answer to your question but perhaps a free alternative: ftpuse

The FTPUSE command maps a remote share (FTP server) as a local drive, so you can use the FTP server of your choice as a local hard drive. FTPUSE is a free application which was developed during production of the network backup suite Ferro Backup System, but disks mapped using FTPUSE can be accessed by any application (e.g. Windows Explorer, Total Commander, MS-DOS command shell).

Works here under Win8.1 Pro x64.

How is Wi-Fi Direct different from ad-hoc wifi? :-\

Looks like the "no brain required, just push the button" version of Ad-Hoc.

Developer's Corner / Re: Any CentOS Security Gurus Here?
« Last post by 4wd on November 15, 2014, 06:20 AM »
Far be it from me to be an expert at anything but having 4 CentOS VPS' perhaps maybe one relatively simple thing springs to mind:

CSF - ConfigServer Firewall, easy to install and can be configured through Webmin (if you use it).

It will also give a 'basic' indication of possible vulnerabilities, (eg. user/pass SSH server, unneeded services, etc).

Some of its functions
This suite of scripts provides:

    Straight-forward SPI iptables firewall script
Daemon process that checks for login authentication failures for:
        Courier imap, Dovecot, uw-imap, Kerio
        openSSH
cPanel, WHM, Webmail (cPanel servers only)
        Pure-ftpd, vsftpd, Proftpd
        Password protected web pages (htpasswd)
        Mod_security failures (v1 and v2)
        Suhosin failures
        Exim SMTP AUTH
Custom login failures with separate log file and regular expression matching
POP3/IMAP login tracking to enforce logins per hour
    SSH login notification
    SU login notification
    Excessive connection blocking
UI Integration for cPanel, DirectAdmin and Webmin
Easy upgrade between versions from within cPanel/WHM, DirectAdmin or Webmin
Easy upgrade between versions from shell
Pre-configured to work on a cPanel server with all the standard cPanel ports open
Pre-configured to work on a DirectAdmin server with all the standard DirectAdmin ports open
Auto-configures the SSH port if it's non-standard on installation
Block traffic on unused server IP addresses - helps reduce the risk to your server
Alert when end-user scripts sending excessive emails per hour - for identifying spamming scripts
Suspicious process reporting - reports potential exploits running on the server
    Excessive user processes reporting
Excessive user process usage reporting and optional termination
Suspicious file reporting - reports potential exploit files in /tmp and similar directories
Directory and file watching - reports if a watched directory or a file changes
Block traffic on the DShield Block List and the Spamhaus DROP List
    BOGON packet protection
Pre-configured settings for Low, Medium or High firewall security (cPanel servers only)
    Works with multiple ethernet devices
Server Security Check - Performs a basic security and settings check on the server (via cPanel/DirectAdmin/Webmin UI)
Allow Dynamic DNS IP addresses - always allow your IP address even if it changes whenever you connect to the internet
Alert sent if server load average remains high for a specified length of time
    mod_security log reporting (if installed)
Email relay tracking - tracks all email sent through the server and issues alerts for excessive usage (cPanel servers only)
IDS (Intrusion Detection System) - the last line of detection alerts you to changes to system and application binaries
    SYN Flood protection
    Ping of death protection
    Port Scan tracking and blocking
Permanent and Temporary (with TTL) IP blocking
    Exploit checks
Account modification tracking - sends alerts if an account entry is modified, e.g. if the password is changed or the login shell
    Shared syslog aware
Messenger Service - Allows you to redirect connection requests from blocked IP addresses to preconfigured text and html pages to inform the visitor that they have been blocked in the firewall. This can be particularly useful for those with a large user base and help process support requests more efficiently
Country Code blocking - Allows you to deny or allow access by ISO Country Code
Port Flooding Detection - Per IP, per Port connection flooding detection and mitigation to help block DOS attacks
    DirectAdmin UI integration
    Updated Webmin UI integration
WHM root access notification (cPanel servers only)
lfd Clustering - allows IP address blocks to be automatically propagated around a group of servers running lfd. It allows allows cluster-wide allows, removals and configuration changes
Quick start csf - deferred startup by lfd for servers with large block and/or allow lists
    Distributed Login Failure Attack detection
    Temporary IP allows (with TTL)
    IPv6 Support with ip6tables
Integrated UI - no need for a separate Control Panel or Apache to use the csf configuration
Integrated support for cse within the Integrated UI
cPanel Reseller access to per reseller configurable options Unblock, Deny, Allow and Search IP address blocks

Found Deals and Discounts / Fusion 7 (Node based compositor) - *FREE*
« Last post by 4wd on November 15, 2014, 01:07 AM »
Yes, via OzBargain again:

Page link: Blackmagic Design: Fusion
Direct download link (for those that don't want to read): Fusion 7.5 Windows

The world’s most advanced visual effects and motion graphics solution!

Fusion is the world’s most advanced compositing software for visual effects artists, broadcast and motion graphic designers and 3D animators. With over 25 years of development, Fusion has been used on over 1000 major Hollywood blockbuster feature films! Fusion features an easy and powerful node based interface so you can construct complex effects simply by connecting various types of processing together. That’s super easy and extremely fast! You get a massive range of features and effects included, so you can create exciting broadcast graphics, television commercials, dramatic title sequences and even major feature film visual effects!

2014-11-15 18_05_42.png

Requirements (listed on OzB):
Requirements

    System Requirements:

  • Processor
Fusion will take advantage of Intel and AMD processors equally well. It is recommended to have at least a Pentium 4 or Athlon 64 processor to operate Fusion. The 64-bit version of Fusion requires dual core and hyperthreaded processors, and thrives when multiple processors are available.
  • Graphics 1
Fusion requires OpenGL capable ATI or NVIDIA graphics cards. Available graphics memory should be 2GB or greater. The Fusion interface requires a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels or greater at 32-bit per channel (true color). Higher resolutions are suggested.
  • Graphics 2
Fusion’s graphics card requirements will be higher for 3D intensive composites. For example, 3D scenes employing large numbers of textures, or very large textures will require significantly more memory for the graphics card. Additionally Fusion makes more extensive use of the GPU for many 3D operations. A modern graphics card will have a big impact on interactivity and performance in Fusion.
  • Graphics 3
High-end workstation class graphics cards should not be required; a decent mid-class gaming class card with large amounts of memory is generally sufficient. Fusion Render Slaves will be unable to render OpenGL 3D scenes unless they have an OpenGL-capable graphics card. Software rendering of 3D scenes will not require a graphics card.
  • Memory
Fusion is designed to make use of every kilobyte of memory available. A minimum of 8GB of memory is required, and 16GB or greater is strongly recommended.
  • Operating Systems
Fusion 7.0 supports the following operating systems:
     Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit
     Microsoft Windows 8 64-bit
  • QuickTime
Fusion requires Apple QuickTime to be installed on the workstation and render nodes in order to read and write to the MOV and PNG file formats.

Who knows, maybe someone here will create Kyrathaba Rising: The Movie  :P

I've used NetRegistry in Australia a couple of years ago but, like rgdot, I moved the domain in question, (.net), to a US based registrar, (they're cheaper).

I also still have a .au domain through VentraIP, mainly because I got a hosting package cheap through them - I really should do something with it I guess  :-\

Living Room / Re: Where do you buy your printer ink?
« Last post by 4wd on November 15, 2014, 12:14 AM »
I have a Canon PiXMA IP4950, uses 5 ink tanks - in Australia those would cost AU$9 each for compatible replacements, (don't even ask about Canon originals).

On ebay I got two complete sets, (10 tanks), for AU$26 shipped from the UK - ink worked fine, looks fine, printer still works.  And the ink is even cheaper now, (~AU$25 for three complete sets ATM).

So I get my ink from the same seller, cheaper than buying local and I don't have to go anywhere - my parents bought the same printer, they get their ink from the same place I do.

Doesn't have your tanks though, sorry, what model is the printer?

OK, I'm going to rewrite the shortcut retrieval routine, there seems to be some problem with handing it to DOS even though the code page supposedly gets set correctly.

This will probably slow it down a bit.

Could you run the attached version and see what happens on the folder tree you sent me - I'm having trouble with the accented characters, (ã), don't know if it's my system or something else.

Pity. I hate throwing stuff away.

If you have no use for it, stick it on ebay - that way you might get some use out of it.

Java doesn't install itself into the PATH environment, at least not on any of my machines.

To get it from the CLI you'd need to CD to its installed directory or use the full path to the command.

I'm guessing Java compiled programs already know how to find it via the registry or other means.

EDIT: My bad, it does, you just have to open the CLI in Admin mode first :-[

For anyone that is interested, there's a 15% discount on any version for the next ~6 hours ... wish I'd known that was coming up a couple of weeks ago.  :)

I'm running the Home Server version and it beats all the free ones I tried, (and that was quite a few).

Microsoft has Mouse Without Borders - while each computer requires a monitor, IIRC, you could drag and drop files from one to the other easily by just moving the mouse across the monitor edge to the next monitor (computer).

It's not possible to do what you want, the mobile phone system doesn't work that way.
That is where the experimental Google Geofencing stuff comes in; it tries to make location determination more accurate by (probably, that's part of the experimental stuff) including the WiFi hotspot information that G' gathered 'by accident' using the Streetview recordings, and connection accesspoint detection when using G' applications.

I don't think that's going to be of much use in his situation because:
a) The WiFi on his phone might not be turned on.

I want to do stuff (like activate wifi, etc) when I enter/leave specific locations

and
b) GPS runs the battery down.

GPS seems to be more accurate but it's resources consuming

Which kind of leaves just the phone towers.  It would be nice to know if Llama was satisfactory ... if he give it a chance to do its stuff.   :)

^I wasn't aware that bridging or teaming could reduce lag (ping?) time for gaming. I was always under the impression it couldn't. But then again the game server and client machines in this scenario are within the LAN and not accessing the WAN so I suppose (under certain conditions) it might be possible.... but I'd want to try using a smarter network switch before I went that route.

We couldn't afford smart network switches back then  ;D

Seemed to work though, less lag was noticeable when the guys who were running the game server had teaming enabled ... or maybe we were all plastered by then and it didn't seem to matter  ;D

Tell it to Learn an area, the more towers it sees in an area, the more accurate its location triggers will be.

It's not possible to do what you want, the mobile phone system doesn't work that way.  How would the phone know how far away a tower is without taking into account information that doesn't get transmitted?

FWIW I've never seen NIC teaming done on the PC level. From my experience it's purely a "server thing." 8)

Forgot about Teaming, this was actually pretty common 4-7 years ago on nVidia based high-end motherboards, aimed at gamers who wanted the lowest lag they could get at LAN nights, or game/media sever, etc.

We had two people at our LAN group who used it, one a nForce4 MB, the other a nVidia 790i based MB, (IIRC).  Two 1Gb ports that could be teamed.

Sorry, I was originally talking more about when you inadvertently make two connections to the same network, (still happens at our LAN night).
