does that mean we could get a friend in canada to buy it and then ship it over without having to pay extra duty when it got here?

like Carol, i'm not going to use Vista, i'm just curious as to what would happen - you could even buy it in canada and flog it on and make a profit in the UK. it can't be that simple, i'm sure.

Darwin, i shall consider your list of apps when i get the time to look at them more closely. and i shall also have to consider the way i work and the software i currently use - or don't use even though it is there on the hard drive.

snap.com isn't so hot. i did a few searches and the preview images aren't there for everything (understandably, i suppose) so the whole point of it kind of falls apart.

urlwolf, i might try the google plugins you mention but i'm primarily a maxthon user so firefox plugins don't help too much.

i did i quick search on the DC forum but couldn't find anything relating to snap.com - i'm not saying there isn't a thread already about it, i just can't remember one.

anyway, www.snap.com a new way to search the internet. again.

i've had a quick go - i wouldn't call it super fast (maybe it's my connection) but once you are presented with the results i can see how it might make your final selection or page choice a bit quicker - snap.com provides quite large thumbnails for the websites in the search results.

is this any better than just clicking on the search results in google - that bit i'm not too sure of.

of course, i believe you (thousands wouldn't).

i've not done much yet with EverNote - the free version, but i am wondering if i should just move all my surfulator content over to it. i don't know. it's like going around in circles. nothing fits the bill 100% percent and yet it's just too hard to give up and accept things for the way they are, i.e. using several apps for similar tasks. i also suspect that nothing will ever satisfy the people in this thread.

sounds like i should be trying EverNote 2.0 anyhow.

probably too much for a coding snack. and the reality of it is that it wouldn't offer much in the terms of making the system more usable.

it would be a nice effect but the 3d environments you can already get don't really do anything to make the system more usable.

3d isn't going to go anywhere until we see different physical ways of interacting with a computer other than using a mouse and keyboard - that and the data you are working with would require a different way of being manipulated.

believe it or not, i think i'm going to give EverNote a try.

urlwolf has made me consider what it would be like to search within the notes for specific text, etc. and it looks like EverNote might be just right.

everyone who as been reading this thread knows what EverNote can do, so i won't repeat it.

i was considering purchasing BrainStorm http://www.brainstormsw.com/ for its quick 'idea' entry ability (has it been mentioned on this thread already?). i'm sure it's very useful for this but i couldn't get the hang of the program interface.

i think i'll be able to use EverNote do something similar regarding throwing loads of ideas into it and then sorting them later on by keyword/tags.

ah yes, i remember the freezing a broken hard drive thread.

i don't think i'd try freezing a cd to get it working again - well, i guess, not until i really need to.

i think i'll go with the shed idea.

urlwolf, you are right, of course.

txt files don't do much other than provide text and there won't be any way of searching within the txt files. hmm, i'd not considered this but the truth is i've never needed that kind of functionality. i work mainly with image files and just add a few notes to them to suggest further editing or possible project ideas. this is probably why i don't get very far with traditional note manager programs.

textnotespro looked like the perfect app in that it's for managing notes but you can also attach any kind of file and even draw images from within the program - only that you can't, or i can't, as it crashes when i start trying to do 'image' things with it.

i have surfulator and so i tried to use that as note manager but it's really not geared up for that kind of thing yet. i know it has the 'note' creation feature but it's too clumsy the way it works. it's great for its primary job of grabbing content from elsewhere but not for creating original content.

i like the idea of locate, i've tried it, but i tend to know exactly where my files are BUT i don't tend to know what the files are named. so it's of little use to me.

urlwolf, this is what i did...

right click on on menu bar in DO, then select "customize..."

select the "context menus" tab.

select "lister context" from the list.

click the "show" button. this will then show you the right click context menu DO uses.

on this menu, right click.

select "insert new > new button".  a "new button" item will appear in the menu.

right click on the "new button" item.

select "edit..."

from this point you can edit it how you like. just make sure you put the command in the "function" field bit.

after you've done that, click the "hide"  button and then "close" and you'll be back in DO with a create .txt file item in the right click menu of DO.

fantastic.

how about keeping the 3rd copy in the car (or other vehicle if you own one). then if there is a disaster you can speed off into the sunset.

probably a good idea to encrypt the data first like f0dder says - just in case someone takes your car.

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by nudone on February 01, 2007, 03:27 AM »
i'll confess, i still haven't got into the habit of using gridmove - stupid, huh - so i won't feel bad if you tell me to get lost  :D

anyway, here's yet another suggestion:

again, maybe this is something gridmove could do or maybe it's something for a new util entirely.

okay. let's go...

i'd like to move the windows around BUT i don't want them to snap completely into a specific grid (blasphemy, i know).

instead. i'd like the edges of my monitor screen to act as the boundaries for all windows that are in view. in other words, i can't move a window off screen.

nothing unusual so far. right. okay, instead of the window moving off screen in the normal manner when it is dragged too far near the edge of the monitor, i'd like the window to resize itself so that it decrease in width or height in the direction the window is moving.

as an example:
(this idea requires a few extra functions for it to work.)

firstly, you have the ability to move windows around on screen by clicking anywhere within the window, holding your mouse down and holding a key down at the same time (eg. ctrl key). or, you hold left and right mouse buttons down at the same time. (this kind of feature has been used with other utils already.)

when moving the window around using the above technique the window goes into 'screen edge boundary' mode. this prevents the window from moving off screen. instead, the window will shrink in size once it hits the edge of the screen - as you drag the window to the edge of the screen the window shrinks more and more AND, i guess, if you don't release the mouse button - if you start dragging the window back away from the edge of the screen, the window will start to grow in size.

if this is possible, it seems to me, that this would be like creating 'grids' on the fly. no window moves off screen as it snaps to the edges of the monitor - and the dragging process creates the newly sized window (grid).

i hope that made sense.

hehe, that's what i do already - except for taking the 3rd hard drive elsewhere. maybe i should just keep it in the shed but i'm still concerned about the freezing temperatures outside.

i wonder if it doesn't look so pretty when you have loads of photos loaded into it, i.e. it takes ages to load up.

except for that small gripe, i think it looks nice. might recommend it to someone i know.

yep, you keep it held down whilst typing - which i have to say is one of the worst ideas i can think off.

but, of course, it depends how you use the keyboard. i do use the caps lock key for typing caps, i don't really understand why people often say that the caps lock key is superfluous.

anyhow, i tried enzo and just found the holding caps lock down a really dumb method of doing things.

Crush, i kind of like your idea. i'm just wondering if freezing temperatures would have any detrimental effect on the things inside the bin. i'm sure one or two frosty cold mornings wouldn't be too bad but would it be okay to leave things down there for a winter?

i have no idea what ground temperatures are like below the surface and whether cd/dvds and hard drives would care if they were out in the cold.

very interesting, tomos.

i shall give your naming structure some thought as i see what you mean about the 'collections' being a bit restrictive.

the 'descriptions' thing is okay but one very nice feature of ACDSee is that if you view your files in 'thumbs + details' mode you can have a very large area for displaying notes related to each of the files - it will easily show you a paragraph of text within the columns of the details view (you do have to make the thumbnails large, though, for  it to work).

i'd like to know a keyboard shortcut for creating txt files in DO, so if you find it please let me know.

i take your point, Carol.

but the actual meter works by the user putting in a few numbers based on what they are charged for electric - which you'd get from your electric company. hopefully somewhere off the bill.

well, yes, £20 isn't so much. it's simply a case of i can hopefully borrow one (with instructions) which will cost me nothing or buy one.

i was going to buy before i found out that my friend had one. i suppose i'm just being tight. if he doesn't find the instructions by the end of the week i'll buy one.
