nice idea.

I would still really like to see Brandon start a new, smaller more manageable project, with more planning up front and feedback from people about an idea for a unique and useful small utility.  I just think it might be a rewarding change of pace to be able to work on something smaller that you can really sink your teeth into.

Web Log Filter / Re: Web Log Radar
« Last post by mouser on August 18, 2008, 07:40 PM »
Just remember, Web Log Filter is not designed to analyze log files -- it's designed to cut log files down to size so that they can be analyzed with other standard desktop log analyzers.

Web Log Filter / Re: Web Log Radar

What i did was release Web Log Filter, the precursor tool for this that is designed to extract subsets of data from apache log files: https://www.donation...LogFilter/index.html

Web Log Radar never quite made it out of internal development..

Over at the makeuseof.com blog (otherwise known as the blog that ignores our software when writing about cool tools), writer Jerry Kid is an honest to god real estate broker, and has a really nice set of posts on real estate related websites.

In a series of posts with lots of nice screenshots, Jerry walks us through five different real estate tools: Realtor.com, Craigslist, Yahoo Real Estate, Trulia, and Zillow (with special emphasis on the first two sites).

If you are looking to buy a house this series of posts would be a nice place to start.

So say you want to buy a house. If you read the newspapers or watch TV or even pickup your news online, you can’t help but notice that the US real estate market is in the tank. There are many good deals to be had, if you could only find them, and then be sure that they were really a smart buy.

But where do you start? The local newspaper? The homes for sale magazines in the supermarket? Do you drive around (at $4.55USD a gallon?) and look for signs?

No! You are a reader of MakeUseOf.com and you have a technology slant on the things that you do, so you want to use online tools to find that house. This is your lucky day because today I kick off a five part series on what I consider to be the 5 most significant online home search websites currently available in the United States.

i like the idea of a local hotkey which could use the current selected item (or first result), i think i will add that and then we can talk about the other more complicated ideas.

Clearly there is a bug somewhere, but i'm not sure what the bug might be.
Can you try to reproduce the problem, and when you restart it and it fails, go into advanced mode and look at the network adapter list and see if your adapter is there.  Let's see if we can't figure out what it is about your settings file that messes up.  And also please do make sure you have latest version installed.

Living Room / Re: Do you remember your first programming job?
« Last post by mouser on August 18, 2008, 06:22 AM »
My first programming jobs were in high school back in the mid 1980s, written in Basic.  Fun times.  I was very lucky to have a friend of the family who was extremely generous with his time and energy in guiding me to some paying projects and working with me on them.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Show sub menu items on mouse over
« Last post by mouser on August 18, 2008, 05:47 AM »
i'll look into it for next release and see how hard it would be to add.

I will create a source-forge account to host the code since the whole solution is now around 40 megs with the icons I use for testing. I can't host this on wikidot because of file size limitations. I'll post a message when I get the source-forge account set up.

Sourceforge is nice for that -- they are very generous with their space.

But DC would also be delighted to give you as much space as you want to host your stuff, just message me.

what do you mean it corrupted your file?  undo has some trouble with objects but should work fine with cropping.

i dont think this trick will work any more since new version, which always tries to sort by date when it refreshes.  i'll look into how hard it would be to make it an option.

I hope a fix can be found for this!  I'll let ecaradec (creator of fscript) know about the issue? Anyone have any clues that might help resolve it?

Thanks for reminding me, i will try to get these features in the next release.

Keep the suggestions coming -- this is good timing because i will be releasing an update of LBC in the next month or two and i will try to get as many requests done as possible.  Some of the items you've mentioned will definitely be implemented.

Thanks for pointing that out grorgy.

I dont think the problem you experienced was a "bug".  you were doing a screen capture, in which case the application name has an ambiguous meaning -- and minicap wasnt capturing it.  $appname$ is for when you capture an application window.

Having said that, i've uploaded a new version with some fixes.  It now will grab $appname$ as the foreground window name, plus i added a few more options.  Let me know if it solves your problems.

I had a hard time finding a good essay saying why not to use floats for money, but it's great that mwb raised this issue with you.  It's not an obvious thing, but it is quite important that you avoid using floating point for money if at all possible.

Here's one short piece on why: http://everything2.c...ex.pl?node_id=803770

Basically the problem is that floating point variables were not designed to store exact values at arbitrary precision, and you can get some very unintuitive and weird rounding errors.  In the case of money, you almost always want to deal with an atomic value of 1 cent, and you dont care about fractions of cents, but you DO care about losing a penny here or there.  In such cases you should use an integer variable that holds the number of cents in the amount. (1 dollar stores as 100).  That lets you work with exact integer arithmetic.

General Software Discussion / Re: What would your ideal Operating System be like?
« Last post by mouser on August 16, 2008, 06:20 AM »
OSX, or rather apple, is big on enforcing UI standards, which as you say is one of the things i am in favor of.  They also as you say have a drag+drop type installation.

I think there are some very nice things about OSX.

But on the other hand, there are some things about apple and there approach that i deeply dislike.  First of all, i really do not like all the focus on visuals.  So I guesst one thing you could say is that i do want a standardized UI but not the mac/osx one.

The other thing that apple does that i very much dislike is that in their attempt to make everything "easy" and "simple", they hide everything that's going on from the user.  I remember a friend who was telling me how great the apple networking was.. then there was a problem connecting, and her mac did not want to say anything about what was wrong or how to fix it.  All the advanced options, errors, and diagnostics were all hidden because that would make things seem to complex.  I am not a fan of all this "automagic" hidden stuff that usually works great but is deadly when it fails.
