General Software Discussion / Re: looking for...a wiki?
« Last post by mouser on September 03, 2008, 08:06 PM »
This is a great question -- i hope we hear some good suggestions because i'll bet a lot of people would benefit from the right thing.

My intuition is this:
Your first instinct to use a wiki is a good one BUT you'd probably be better off with a web service slightly more specifically designed for this function -- ie events, quick notices, etc.  Rather than a pure wiki which is more flexible in some ways but will be harder for novices to use.

Looking forward to seeing what other people suggest.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome -- key reasons for its debut
« Last post by mouser on September 03, 2008, 02:37 PM »
A negative take on Chrome from OSNews.  Not saying i agree with all of it, but i think it's worth sharing:

Google Chrome Considered Harmful
http://www.osnews.co...e_Considered_Harmful

Screenshot - 9_3_2008 , 2_37_02 PM_thumb.png

..in the following text I will demonstrate that Chrome [based on what we are allowed to know] puts strain on the Designer and Developer communities, is not innovative (save for one feature), and copies ideas liberally from Google's worst enemy.

And google jumps on the apple marketing bandwagon:
My greatest problem with the cartoon strip is that while it's supposed to explain how Chrome works, it really explains how all major browsers work, implying that these features were invented for Chrome alone.

This is the #1 trick apple uses to sell their products (in my view), and i find it depressing.

Living Room / Samarost Developers Working on a Full-sized Adventure Game: Machinarium
« Last post by mouser on September 03, 2008, 03:55 AM »
Way back in 2005, DC member m_s told us about an incredibly beautiful and charming flash hunt-and-click adventure game called Samarost.  Samarost 2 is easily still one of the best and most charming flash games of its kind.

The developers have released a few follow ups which have all been good.  Now comes word they are working on a full sized commercial adventure game called Machinarium set to be released in early 2009.

There is a video preview on the site and it does definitely has that samarost2 look and feel.  Can't wait!

I think what you are probably experiencing is the Max Size limit option, which tells CHS that when text copied is bigger than certain amount to ignore it.  Go to the "Capture Options" tab and make the Plain Text size larger.

this certainly seems needed -- ill add some option for it.

by the way -- does anyone know if there is a term in the field of commercial marketing where a company releases a product without the actual intention of spending much money marketing it -- but instead just to scare away or keep the competition in line, using the threat of large-scale marketing if a competitor tries to challenge them?

from www.webware.com:

Mozilla CEO John Lilly on Tuesday waxed philosophical about the release of Google's new Web browser, Chrome, despite it signaling an attempt by the search giant--and Mozilla's major financier--to become its biggest competitor.
..
Mozilla and Google have had a long and very fruitful relationship. Google is the default search engine on the Mozilla Firefox browser, and the company pays Mozilla large sums for the privilege: $56 million of the $66 million that Mozilla Corp. made in 2006.

But Lilly, writing in his blog, said he welcomed the competition posed by Google. Lilly said Mozilla would continue its financial relationship with Google until 2011 and would continue to work with the search giant on technical collaborations such as crash reports system Breakpad.

Paul Kim, vice president of marketing for Mozilla, said that Google staff would be allowed to continue to contribute to the Mozilla Foundation's projects. "As a 100 percent open-source project, we welcome contributions to Firefox from everyone," he said.

I think it's quite possible what we are looking at here, from a business standpoint, is google covering its bases in the way that only a giant corporation with money to burn can. Recently we heard that google and mozilla agreed to continue for the time being their business arrangement where google massively funds firefox and firefox makes google the default search engine in the firefox browser.

It seems plausible that what google is doing with Chrome is basically saying to firefox: we have an alternative browser we can market and spend the money on.  i.e. they are covering their bases -- their goal is to dominate the search space -- if that means buying their way into the top browser then they will do that, but what if firefox demands too much money or changes their mind and decides to use a different search engine as their default (they can't really change search engines even if they wanted to now because they need google money).

Chrome may be the shot across the bow from google warning firefox not to think about trying to mess with having google as the default search engine.  So basically my guess is google won't push the new browser to hard as long as firefox stays in line.. But the threat will be that if firefox ever tries to stop partnering with google then google will go all out against firefox.  If true it's not exactly happy news. Or maybe i am just being conspiratorial.

« Last post by mouser on September 02, 2008, 09:40 AM »
Regarding the modifier keywords, it is supposed to do #1, BUT you can make it act like #2 if you just add * to the modifier list.

Regarding the optional file extension restrictions, can you try disabling all the other search paths to make sure the problem isn't that it's finding files in other search directories.

Basically a simple alarm clock with a different tab/alarm for each day.  Looks like a simple solution that could be just the thing some people might need.

College Alarm Clock 1.06 is a personal Alarm Clock for your PC. Features a 7-Day Format so that you can wake up earlier/later on different days of the week. Save/Load your weekly schedule to your hard drive. It will play any media file stored on your PC or LAN. You must have a player installed for each media file you wish to play (e.g., Winamp for mp3's or CD's, media player for avi's, Real Player for .rm's) Created by a college student for college students... in other words, freeware.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Multiple directories (%PATH%) in Search Folders list
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2008, 09:37 PM »
it can't be done easily but seems like a reasonable idea to me since FARR already will resolve an environment variable pointing to a single path.  in fact i'll bet you're not the only one who would like to have %PATH% searched for files. makes complete sense.

This could be done by allowing "Directory Path" to contain multiple directories, separated by a user-specified separator (so I'd use %PATH% and ";").

works for me though i'd suggest we use ; always.

i'm putting it on the todo list and hopefully i can get it in the next release.

General Software Discussion / Re: License Key Problem
« Last post by mouser on September 01, 2008, 03:26 PM »
not all of our programs require a license key.

Translator Boomerang doesn't need a license key, it never expires or has any limits :)
