General Software Discussion / Re: Verifying if an email has been spoofed
« Last post by J-Mac on May 03, 2008, 01:30 AM »
Be careful, though, using Thunderbird with a program named Freenigma. I had downloaded and installed Freenigma as a Firefox extension but it somehow corrupted my Thunderbird installation, and even a clean uninstall and reinstall of T-Bird didn't help.  It was finally solved when I reinstalled Windows XP.

Several of my email messages were "overwritten" as invitations to sign up for Freenigma. I wrote them about it and they insisted that was not possible, and that it was just that Thunderbird is notorious for such corruption. But I haven't heard of any other rampant corruptions of T-Bird. It was a real pain while it was slowly ruining my messages.

…And doesn't that tell you everything you need to know about Roboform as a security program rather than an ease-of-use program?

That's why I use it!   :D

Security for my passwords?  Oh - I have that, too!

Really, I use Roboform because I have login credentials for somewhere around 2,500 sites, and I would never know them otherwise.  For secure passwords - of which I have a LOT fewer - I simply keep them secure.

Everything's a lot easier that way.  For me, anyway.

Hi There is a major security flaw in Roboform as it does not encrypt your passwords in the default folder while in use ,that means if you are hacked it is easy read , I personally was shocked to note this when told by another user …so I strongly recommend you dont use it for important passwords eg bank accounts ….after emailing roboform the agree that is the way it is and until they fix it I wouldn't use it again . I was a great believer in it until I was shown this flaw

This has been the case forever, I think.  Or at least since I have used it, and I started using it in 2002 or 2003.  If you search you will see complaints about this way back.

Shutdown what? Our computers?  Why?  What's the point?

Please don't tell me it's a "green" thing, save the planet and all that.  I'll gag.

Tell Al Gore about it!

I'll have to check what version I am running -- it is the version that was available when this thread started; haven't checked back at all.  Does Linkman by any chance check for updates to itself?

Also, Firefox bookmarks are all that I have imported/exported.  And I am not really concerned about whether or not IE favorites have icons; don't use them enough to even know!

Another quick question:  Can the drop thing be made transparent to a configurable degree?  It is LARGE and wherever I place it, it is in the way.

Thanks!

Jim

PS - My version is 7.2.0.21

Outertech,

I've noticed since I first synced that I have lost all of the favicons in my bookmarks.  Did Linkman do that?  Doesn't Linkman handle favicons at all?  I checked the help file and it makes no mention that I can find.

Thanks!

Outertech guy:

I am absorbing your last post now; I've been pretty ill for a couple of days, and haven't even looked back here since last night.  So I'll try to take my time and get it all set up.

What I had switched to doing after realizing that selecting a folder each time wouldn't be as simple is to have it all go to a dated folder daily, and then try to sort it all out when I have time.  Someone else here - maybe Ken? - mentioned that here so I thought I would give that a try.

I'll post back after I'm on my feet again.

Thanks!

I think someone should take note of the fact that, whether you decide Linkman is right for you or not, rarely have we seen a shareware author so responsive to user questions and suggestions posted on this forum.  It's impressive and speaks very well for Outertech.

On that I agree completely.  I am impressed with the level of communication here by Outertech!  And I'm not easily impressed.  (Read:  "I can be a real PITA"   :-[ :)   )

Yep.  Exactly, bootup only.

Sounds like you already knew it.  I didn't see anything before I posted; sorry about that - if it is already posted elsewhere, then I should have searched more diligently.

Thanks mouse-man!

Screenshot Captor / Screenshot Captor Places Small Window on Desktop
« Last post by J-Mac on April 25, 2008, 10:28 PM »
@mouser,

Recently Screenshot Captor has started placing a small window on the Windows desktop on my desktop and notebook computers.  I closed it earlier and it might take a restart to get it back.  It is really just the title bar - the rest of the window is not showing - and it is only about 2" long, but when I maximized it the full SSC window showed.  I have SSC configured to start minimized and to minimize and close to the systray (Windows Notification Taskbar).  Currently I just click on the close X at the top right of the title bar and it disappears - actually it is just "closing to the systray.

This appears to be a fairly recent thing, as I do not remember seeing this for very long.  I'm not sure what version or build it started with as SSC is automatically updated with Dcupdater.  It definitely did not do this in most earlier versions I have used.  It is occurring on both my desktop computer running XP Pro SP2 and my notebook running Vista Ultimate, both of which are presently running SSC 2.37.03.

This is not a problem; just a very tiny annoyance, and that only because I'm so anal!  But I just wanted to report it.

Thanks!

OK - I imported my Firefox bookmarks again and the ones saved last night in Linkman are there.  Whew!!  :)

I'm reading through the Help file and PDF manual again, a little more closely now.  But some of this I would expect to be more easily determined right in the UI.  Also, a lot of times the documentation refers only to the Internet Explorer Favorites and the Netscape bookmarks.  I think a lot of the help doc material has been around for quite a while...

I do think it is great that it has such a detailed PDF manual available, though the Help file is a little sparse.  Some items I searched for and got the "Not Found" ding. Also the manual goes into a lot of the basics, and is lengthy mostly because of the large number of screenshots - which I actually think is very good.  However some things like the database locations are not shown at all.  I was going through all the Application Data folders over and over, plus the Program Files folder - only to find it is kept in My Docs!  Not a bad choice at all, though so many developers still insist on using the Program Files folder that I didn't think to look on My Docs first.

Also, the Settings dialog...  This might be one for that website of Settings designs that need improvement.  Tabs down the right side and settings seem a bit, scattered? It will take getting used to!

Thanks!

Problem: I just opened Linkman to its full window and - nothing is there.  Nothing at all.

What happened to my bookmarks I had saved last night?  Last night I had imported my Firefox bookmarks file and they were all showing in Linkman.  When I first sat at my computer today Linkman was running in Deskbar mode and I would have thought that it would still have all in there that I had imported, plus what I added last night.

Hopefully the Outertech guy will reply and tell me how to get them open.

Is it required to manually save every so often?  Nothing is auto-saved?  My computer rebooted sometime during the very early morning hours after a scheduled maintenance task ran - but that is the case daily. If I must save everything manually before a reboot, then that IS a deal-killer!

Thanks Ken!

However this could make saving bookmarks kind of a longer process.  Hopefully there is a quicker way to which Support can alert us. Otherwise I will be adding significant time to my bookmarking efforts.  Though in actuality, I currently do need to take a hard look at my bookmark organization, mainly due to not being real careful what and where I save.

Thanks again!

@Ken or Outertech Support:

The method for adding URL's using the deskbar is fairly simple, except for one aspect, and I have not yet found a quick remedy:  Clicking the globe w/Link icon auto adds the URL to my bookmarks, but it goes to whichever folder is highlighted in the Linkman window, which is, of course, not visible when adding URLs.  If I wanted to add the bookmark to a specific folder in my bookmarks (actually my Linkman bookmarks), how do I accomplish this without opening the main Linkman interface?

That is probably the one thing I would miss by not using the Firefox extension "OpenBook".  It's dialog has a smaller representation of my Fx Bookmarks folder contents and I can quickly navigate to the directory/sub-directory where I would like to place the URL I am trying to add. Screen Cap below:

Hi Tiesenhausen Michael, and welcome to the DC forums!!

I haven't done much with my IE Favorites in a few years, but IIRC they are similar to Firefox's bookmarks - and its bookmarks organizer.  That is, not very user friendly in the way of organizing quickly, easily, and in a way that is unique to you.  IOW, not much at all in the way of user configuration.

Linkman is - hopefully - an application that allows us to organize our Favorites/bookmarks the way we can use them most efficiently and effectively.  I cannot say exactly how well it does that just yet, as I just installed it last night and am trying it out to see how I like it myself.

It appears at first blush that it does indeed give me more organizing options than does the default bookmarks manager in Firefox.  However it also appears to be more geared toward IE than anything else.  If you have read the posts in this thread - which I am sure you have - then you can see that.

That alone is not a deal-killer for me at all, though to be honest I would like to see more of a commitment to Firefox before I make a purchase.  Also, I would prefer something that is extremely mobile - even an online solution.  Linkman may well be mobile enough via using it on a USB flash drive, though I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Really just a way to cook and mix your Favorites a little more than the default Favorites.

General Software Discussion / Re: Carbonite Online Backup
« Last post by J-Mac on April 25, 2008, 02:19 AM »
Mozy is doing fine with mine.  I have over 60 GB going there and it is refreshed daily.

I have also been looking hard for a good file/folder management application.  Had a couple threads here requesting advice, but there is apparently NOTHING out there that really does document management well.  Paperport is about it and that has a big drawback:  It's developed by Nuance!!  And that means it is big, slow, drags resources down, and has absolutely NO support.  Unless you pay by the minute or call - and all that does is give you an even bigger reason to complain about their support -- when you pay and STILL get no help!

Thanks for that fbhayes.

I did pick up a new WRT54GL to replace my WRT54G router.  Haven't switched them out yet, though.  And I also have an older Linksys that still works - just OLD.  Think it is a BEF... something or other. Served me well for quite a while.  Also, a Netgear that I had at another house in the mountains - that's stored right now.  And another from my late MIL - I got back my old Dell Dimension and some other network equipment that I had set up for her about a year and a half ago.

And I am pretty well setup for backups:  Acronis True Image Home 11, BackUp4All Pro, Super Flexible File Synchronizer, and Mozy Online backup.  Those, plus three different external USB drives: 2 - 500 GB, and 1 250 GB.   :D

The more I try to use Linkman, the more it is apparent that it is designed for use with Internet Explorer.  It needs to have a little more development toward Firefox and/or Opera before I would take it seriously.

The IE stamp is all over it.  Defaults to using IE no matter what your default browser is; the toolbar has an icon to "Open IE Favorites", but nothing for Firefox; the File menu on the top menubar has "Open IE Favorite", Save as IE Favorites", and "Merge with IE Favorites".  Nothing in support of Firefox except that it can import its bookmark file. And open URLs in it - if you change the default Settings - which are initially set for IE.

I know he said that he can't add a toolbar to Firefox because of Firefox's limitations - though that doesn't seem to prevent others from adding at least extensions that offer similar functionality as toolbars.  And I don't believe Firefox prevents the addition of "Open" and "Save As" or "Merge As" commands in the Linkman menus.  Or icons on its own toolbar.

Hopefully it will break out of the IE shell in future releases and add more Firefox support.  As for Opera, I do know that they severely limit access to their API and make it very difficult for ANY third party integration - the main reason Opera is not my primary browser.  But Firefox most definitely invites a lot more integration than Linkman currently has.

Thanks!

Linkman seems to have some browser confusion built-in.  Or maybe I don't understand what it is trying to do.

First, by default it is configured to open Internet Explorer - even though Firefox is my default browser.  Why wouldn't it be initially configured to use the default browser?  Seems presumptuous...

So I went into Settings and changed it to use the default browser.  But now double-clicking a URL does nothing at all.  Soooo, finally I tried the Mama Bear's bed, OOps - I mean I selected Firefox, and then it worked.  Why doesn't it pickup the default browser?  Other programs do this fine, so I know I have it correctly set as my default browser.  Also, the Settings say for it to always open a new tab, but it insists on opening a new Firefox window.  I went in and changed that, and then went in again and changed it back to Firefox in new tabs.  This time it did work.

However there are some URLs that instead open a "parked domain" page at Texturizer.com.  Huh?  The domains are good - if I copy it and paste it into Firefox, IE, or Opera, it goes right to the correct site.  But in Linkman it goes to the Texturizer.com parked thing.  (I'm guessing that Texturizer is the developer's web host, and this is his way of referring bad URL's to them?)  This does not happen on all URLs; just on some.  If they were bad URLs I would understand, but they are good ones.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Camstasia alternatives

An open-source alternative: CamStudio. It's in "2.5 Beta 1" stage for quite some time, but it works good. And output to SWF is very useful.

yksyls,

I downloaded that a while ago but never tried it.  One of those things I always say I'm going to try but never do!  On some forums I see posts saying it has a lot of problems but someone else always then replies they love it.

Are you using it?  If so, how do you like it?

Thanks!

CSE HTML Validator Standard version is at Bits DuJour Friday, 25-Apr-2008 for $44.85.

While that still seems pretty darned high, it is discounted 35% from $69.00.  I don't use it but some of my web site designer friends seem to always have it open on a desktop.

Also says that this price gives you a free upgrade to CSE HTML Validator Standard 9.0 when released, though I don;t know when that will be.
