Stoic!  That's so cool!  Thanks man.  I just emailed the guys, I'm sure they'll like it.  This coding snack stuff is incredible quality with incredible service.  And all the money goes to the big boys like Adobe with their bloated apps, what? customer service, and small issues that don't get resolved version after version after...

Yes, I googled it after posting. I can't guarantee anything (there's alot going on), but I'll see what I can do. Is there a specific time you'd like to have it by? It does sound easy enough, but the formatting code is about 8 pages long (And I'm not entirely sure where I stopped at... eek!).
No time table at all.  8 pages long?  Sheesh.

LOL Actually it's 11 pages (I just checked). So now the curiosity has gotten the best of me (shit...) I started poking at it with a stick to see what would happen. Now there seems to be two different options for the output, one of which is just the current UTC time. The other is the number of seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00. So are they looking for:
Number of seconds UTC 1324054818
Number of seconds Locale Time (same as above -300 sec because I'm GMT -5)
Unix/RFC 2822 formatted date: Fri, 16 Dec 2011 17:00:17 UTC

I'm assuming it's the first one. but want to double check before I get too far into testing this. I'm currently using the display at the top of the page at http://www.epochconverter.com/ as a target for the output.

Note: if it's really just UTC time they're after the w+/-xx format specifier will give the UTC (or any other zone) time. So me being GMT/UTC -5, would use w+05 to get back to UTC instead of the usual 'h' in the custom format string.
Yeah, I think it's the first one with just the long string of numbers.  That's a cool website you linked, I wonder if that would be good enough for the guy.

You know, I'd like to comment here.  I was heavily involved with physics research when I was in school and all this stuff was a big deal.  The scientists, if I'm not mistaken, HATE that this thing has become called the god particle.

Stoic, someone here at work was just asking for this:
Can TClock somehow add the ability to display Unix Time (Posix time)?  I couldn't find anything on the internet that could do it.  Thanks.

Posix Time?? [Drawing a bit of a blank]...Is that the one that is the number of seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00? Currently no ... But it doesn't sound that hard to do... Let me know if I'm on the right track, and I'll take a shot at it.
You know, I'm not entirely sure either, i just was emailed the question.  I looked it up and it's called "unix time" or "posix time".  Here's the wikipedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unix_time

I think it has something to do with a number that starts with some date in 1970, and has been continuing since.  So any date/time can be converted to this number like 1323962876 .  So it doesn't have punctuations or anything.  I tell you what, if you were able to do it, it would really surprise the guy, that would be fun for me!  Anyway, that's as much as I know.  It doesn't sound very hard to do, sounds like a simpel conversion formula.  But i don't really know anything about programming.

I've noticed a couple of applications with specific 64-bit builds that run much more responsively and seem faster than the 32-bit counterparts.  One of the most dramatic examples I experienced was Bluebeam.

And I would say that the most important thing that I've learned (and important in this situation IMO) is to be slow to take offense.  I don't think any offense was meant in the statement.  I think that the normal usage of that statement is to cause offense, but not in this case.  And I always try to remember that offense is a choice.  Someone else can say whatever they want- but you have to choose to take offense. :)
Oh I see what you mean.  No I wasn't offended, I know CW, he's a good guy.  What I meant was that for the purpose of a discussion, to say it's none of your business doesn't make sense.  There's nothing left to discuss after that, it's like saying I don't want to talk about it.  This is a discussion.  We're exploring a topic from all angles, all sides.

Sorry CW, I didn't mean it that way.  I was looking for a follow up on your perspective, that's all.  I know I can be a dick at times, but I wasn't trying to be here.
2209
Sure, your probably don't want to be too extreme with either of these.  You don't want to turn a blind eye completely, nor do you want to be hawking everyone's bidnez.  (I tend to struggle with the latter, as most here would agree).

I'm learning that the way that I'm most comfortable with is to question most things, keep it all in mind, let it guide your actions in the background, but don't be so quick to try to fix things yourself.  I guess I'm learning to be more patient, so forth.  be wise as serpants, harmless as doves...speak softly, carry a big stick...etc.
2210
But you don't know, I don't know.

Frankly, it's none of your business. The NBA can run its organization the way they want (short of fraud, and violating other laws). The fact that they have veto power over franchisees' actions is none of your concern. If you don't like the sport that results, don't watch basketball games anymore. You have no inherent right to a professional basketball league that's run according to your desires.
I don't quite understand your attitude.  Are you saying that I can't think about or question things that aren't "my business"?  I'm questioning the disturbing trend of corporations getting used to the idea of guaranteed profits.  Can you or I get guaranteed profits the way that most of the big companies due, whether they are financial corps, NBA, etc.?  No.  So that's how it's my business.

The "frankly, it's none of your business" comment is a pretty offensive thing to say to someone, especially in a discussion forum.  That's what an authority says to somebody when they don't want to answer a question, which is their right.  But why you would take that stance in their place doesn't make sense to me.  I mean, with that attitude, nothing is your business.  Don't have a discussion forum, don't talk about news, only speak about things that pertains directly to you.  And I don't mean to attack you personally (we're all friends here)...but this is the kind of attitude that I have been struggling against lately.  It's like everyone is telling me to not question things and just go about your way.  That's cool, that's wise...I like that.  But you can't help noticing things eventually, and their implications down the road.

And as far as who's business it is, it's absolutely false that they are all compartmentalized.  The economy is so global now that most large businesses are directly or indirectly tied to you in a far more important way that most people think.  Unless you rent, pay no taxes, and have no investments, you can be sure that you're money (and as a result your time and energy) is being taken advantage of in ways you would not like by people you'll never know about.

But again, there are two camps here.  Those who question this stuff and are disturbed by it, and those who are ok by it.  Neither is right or wrong, but it is interesting.

General Software Discussion / Re: AdBlock Plus To Not Block All Ads
« Last post by superboyac on December 13, 2011, 12:18 PM »
Wonder what "inducement" (or threat) was offered to the creators of AdBlock to "fix" how their product operated? Because I strongly doubt this decision was made purely after a philisophical discussion around the company cracker-barrel. The somewhat defensive tone in the announcement leads me to believe AdBlock is getting something in return for  making this change.

It's an annoying change in policy even though I permit ads from most sites I visit regulary for exactly the justifications given. But that's *MY* choice, and not one made for me by AdBlock.

In the last few months I've made a conscious effort to spend far less time on the web than I previously have. Mainly because I'm getting so sick of the commercialism (and juvenile crassness) I'm starting to see creeping in everywhere.

Maybe I'll just need to cut back a bit more going forward.  :-\
I'm totally with you.  My web use has just naturally decreased a lot over the last couple of years.  It's not so easy to find things, too much clutter.  It's more of a headache than not.  The number of sites I visit has decreased quite dramatically.  the internet doesn't really feel all that fun or educational anymore.  It feels like it's become a thing to try to get people to click around as much as possible.  Facebook, youtube, google...they've all become increasingly more annoying to use.  So I stop using.  Now, I'll focus more on my ow personal projects and see how those go.
2212
CW, you say that nobody is colluding.  How do you know that?  You know about as much as anyone else on the outside, which is nothing.  All you are saying is that you think nobody is colluding or that you like to believe that nobody is colluding.  But you don't know, I don't know.

But that's the problem.  Nobody knows, but all the signs point to something shady.  This is what's going on in a lot of big businesses right now.  The public is becoming a little more aware of these things, we're entering some kind of different era, something like a new sort of enlightenment era.  At least that's what it seems like.

whenen a mail is sent you will find it in Sent subfolder. if it FAILS to send it will still be in Outbox.  I dont think there are exceptions to this.
you can also select an email account and hit ctrl+shift+A to bring up log which should show you any mail sent or received.
Whoops!
I used the wrong account to send it.  Found it!
So embarrassing...
Sorry everyone, totally uncalled for.

(I'm about to let expletives fly, so don't read if that's not your bag)

I swear, this fucking program kills me sometimes.  I just wrote a long ass email to my band detailing out all sorts of things.  I created an address group (who the fuck knows what that actually means in the Bat) assuming it's for sending an email to multiple people.  I sent the email, supposedly it went through...but it's not saved in the sent items box or anywhere else!  Now I don't know if I sent it or what.  It's nowhere to be found.  Furthermore, from looking at the To field, I wasn't even sure if it was sending it out to the email addresses I specified.  This program is such a cluster fuck.  It's weird, because I do like the program a lot, but sometimes, I just can't take it.  You can't even copy/paste contacts around easily, it actually took me a while to figure that shit out.

So I'm sitting here, I have no idea if the email went out, if it didn't, I have to write the whole thing again.  Woe is me.  I love this fucking program the way I love that shitty, delicious, awful bacon-wrapped hot dog they sell on the street next to my work that doesn't even come with a fucking napkin half the time.  I shove that god-knows-what-is-in-that meat down my throat to add a layer of heart attack death around my blood tubes...and I love and hate every fucking minute of it.

OK i'm done.

More expensive, but just mentioning it because I have one and it's worked extremely well for me:  NuForce's Nudaq.
http://www.amazon.com/NuForce-uDAC-2-Silver-Headphone-24bit/dp/B003Y5LY1C/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323654072&sr=1-1-spell

No pressure, if you're not into audio you're probably not interested.  Just throwing it out there!

(I use the nudaq from my computer into a receiver.  I assume the one mentioned above would do the same.  I would not expect these to power speakers directly (self-powered speakers should be fine.)
I may give that a shot.  I've never experimented with the next level of audiophile-ness, which is using a preamp like that.  Preamps are one of those things that most people look at the price tag and immediately think it's BS pretentiousness.  But there must be something to it, so I need to try it out.

All animals are equal, except that some animals are more equal than others...

Pretty much.

Like I said, when it comes to 'voluntary' associations and leagues, the rules are what you agreed to when you joined. As long as there's not a violation of public safety laws, you can get away with just about anything in the US. Same goes for closed-shop labor unions, fraternal organizations, churches and so-called 'faith-based' organizations, etc.

Not to say those rules will hold up in court. But judges usually cut private associations a lot of slack when it comes to that. And most associations have some broad "for the good of the league" clause that allows for discretionary actions.

I think, in the end, this will be a tempest in a teacup and end with the team owners and players getting their way.
Do you think that's true?  I'm always am over-paranoid about stuff and scared that I can't do anything for fear of offending someone, getting sued, etc.  I'd like to get a better gauge on how paranoid I am vs. how paranoid I should be.

 :greenclp:
Bravo Paul!  Great post.  You sure are in tune with the NBA!  A lot of food for thought there, even as the Laker fan that I am.  Ever from an unbiased perspective, this is not good for the NBA.  You are right, this is partly a lingering effect of MJ's retirement in the 90's and the NBA struggling to find his replacement.

What's most disturbing about all of this is that I think this is going to make watching basketball far less interesting.  The talent is too diluted, too many games nobody cares about.  basically, people will tune in for the big hype games that come around every few months, like the christmas game, but overall, interest will go down significantly.  I think a lot of teams should just shut down.  If it's not good business to own an NBA team, why do it?  Why force a bad, unprofitable team into the mix, and then deal with all the side-effects?  If the general public is more interested in LA, NY, Boston, etc. then what's wrong with just having those teams?  Let the market dictate who gets to have a team.  The benefit of that is that the product will be better also.  More concentrated talent, better games, even the regular season daily games would be way more exciting.  But I suppose that is too much common sense...it's not complicated enough.

I have no problem with jolie.  What has she ever done that's even controversial?  I'm not aware of anything, but I don't follow here closely, maybe I missed something.  I know she's with Pitt, they adopt a bunch of kids from Africa or something.  What is the criticism?  That she's too skinny?  Too hot?  ha!  Whatever, i don't really care.

@40hz: That comment of mine was deliberately and completely tongue-in-cheek.
I blamed you and @Carol Haynes as I thought you were both completely undeserving of any blame and could appreciate the joke.
Yes, "red whale" was my invention. It's a very large red herring.
To criticise someone else for spelling errors whilst at the same same time making a spelling error oneself seemed an amusing thing to do - a joke about oneself.
I have to admit fabricating the bit about @superboyac and his making an OP about Angelina Jolie, for the purposes of making a joke. AJ is to me a typical representative of the great deal of wrong that is done to our daughters - to create/manipulate women in this world to conform to a stylised male ideal sex object.
Wuh!...huh??
Why am I being used as a fictional character??!!  What has happened to me?

I don't know if any of you are following the fiasco happening in the NBA right now.  The NBA vetoed a trade that would have sent arguably the leagues best point guard to the Los Angeles Lakers (not arguably the most successful and prized NBA franchise in history).  In the three team trade, the New Orleans Hornets would have gotten some really good players, and a third team was involved.  All in all, in basketball terms, the trade was good, all parties were satisfied.

For the first time ever, the league vetoed the trade.  No reason has been given.  To make things worse, New Orleans was struggling financially last year, and instead of closing up shop, the NBA stepped in and purchased it.  So for the first time in history, the league owns one of the teams.  And now the league blocked the trade.  Makes you wonder what's going on.

The bottom line is this:  all the millionaires and billionaires have gotten used to having their profits GUARANTEED.  This is killing any opportunities we have in this country as middle or low class citizens.  They have no guarantees for anything, financially.  So all these rules, copyrights, marketing techniques, media hype, etc...it's all put in place by the people who can pay for them (the rich corporations) to make sure their profits are guaranteed.  And can anyone else do the same?  Nope.

So there's a big stink about this now.  Players are now restricted in movement, a right fought for and won by Oscar Robertson decades ago.  The term "slaves" is being thrown around, and it's got a point.  Granted they are multi-million dollar slaves, the idea is present.

This is not hopeful for those who aren't already extremely successful.  We're feeling the burden of scrapping for every penny while the fat cats are being gauranteed more and more profits as each day goes by.  Every time you try to do something to help your cause in life, pay attention to all the legal jargon and rules that get thrown across your path to slow you down, all the forms you have to fill out, all the "extra" commitments made in terms of contracts and monthly payments, all the money you have to dish out BEFORE you even try to do anything.  Oh, you found some like-minded friends, who are intelligent and creative, and you guys want to make your way in the world?  Good luck..the opportunity is not there, and you will probably get beaten down along the way if you try.  That's exactly what has happened to these superstar atheltes in the NBA.  But what it means for us normal folk is not positive either.

There are those who don't believe that any of this is happening because there are no statistics proving it for them, or you can't see it in the media.  In these articles we read every day with advertisements plastered all over the place, you don't know where the article begins and where the ad ends.  heck, the article authors are probably trying to just churn out conent because they need every penny they can get, and it's not about quality, it's about quantity.  All of this is killing our opportunities.

Most people have to scrap for every single cent they get.  Yet with one click of a button, you send thousands of dollars each month directly into the financial system (mortgage payments is what I'm referring to here) and the financial system proceeds to spread that money to a lot of extremely wealthy people who's "skill" and creativity is only in coming up with new and better ways to guarantee profits for them in business...when the whole idea of the business ecosystem is that profits are not guaranteed but dicatated by the market, etc.

Or maybe that isn't how business works.  Maybe profits ARE guaranteed.  Are YOUR profit guaranteed?  No.  So who?  Good question.  Can i start a business and guarantee profits before I commit to it?  No.  So who?  Seems like a pretty nice world to be in.  I wonder how we can get there?  Sigh...

So the Nook (not the Kindle) sounded like a really good idea - for kids at any rate. I asked my daughter Lily (aged 10) about it and she's mulling it over. She and I went out a couple of days ago to a secondhand bookstore and a children's bookstore (new books) and she bought a whole stack of real hardback and paperback books with her birthday money. I idly wondered at the time whether some of these might be available as ebooks.

My daughter is 10 also, and the books that she was anticipating are all on the Nook Color.  One of the things that I still don't like about ebooks is the fact that you can't get them used.  I'd understand it to a certain extent if they cost less than dead tree pubs, but they don't, so they really need to put a way in to transfer DRM.  They won't, of course- they don't like the used book market either.  Another thing I very much don't like now with the way that the book market has shaken out is that eBooks are never on sale anymore.  I built up my considerable collection at fictionwise.com with their sales and their book club.  I miss that.

On another topic, as I said above, I like this topic (Amazon and publishers) and I like the ebook topic in general.  However, this particular topic is so fragmented that when it comes up in your unread topics, you don't know what to expect, and the conversations are very interweaved and especially later if someone peruses it or tries to find something, there really won't be a good way.  Is it possible to separate these into topics in the future, or just make it obvious that this is a mish mash of information?
This copyright craziness is killing any enjoyment in life.  The used book experience from back in the day was a great for multiple reasons: it was cheaper to buy for people who didn't need a brand new book, it gave some mom and pop type people a chance to make a living running a used bookstore, it gave books a nice aesthetic quality (what about the experience of finding an old book at someone's house?  that's gone)...all sorts of nice things are gone now because of all this.  ARRRGHGHGHGH!!!!
2223
I'm so pissed.  I just found out that my current ISP, time warner roadrunner, offers mobile internet access for an additional $20 a month.  I like that, I'm willing to try it out.  What I want to do is carry it around with me wherever I go and be able to access my phone, tablet, laptop with it.

So here's the problem:  you can't buy a hotspot independently.  At least not the good ones I know of.  You have to buy it through Verizon or whatever.  It's such complete nonsense.  I'm telling you, this cell phone industry is quickly becoming the next thing that needs to be exposed for what it is.  It's a monopoly, they are very very severely limiting the technology and innovation that creative people can take advantage of right now.  They just want to nickel and dime you for every single byte you use.  All the cell phone manufacturers, ISPs, carriers...they're all in bed with each other...and probably the government, too.  What's worse is that this highly profitable and potentially innovative industry is completely shut off to the general public.  In a time where the economy is struggling, there are a lot of people that can provide cool and interesting services to people, but we can't because the data pathways are not available to us.  I'm so pissed every time I think about this.

So I want to buy a mobile hotspot, but I don't want to go through the carriers.  I don't want to sign a contract.  I just want to go to the fucking store and pick up a hotspot, like I'd pick up anything else like groceries, routers, hard drives, etc.  Why should this be different?  because this is all these companies have...control of the bandwidth.  All these industries that are raking it in now are just sitting there preventing people from doing anything, and do they do anything innovative?  No.  All they do is figure out more ways to leverage...more ways to find financial loopholes...more fees to charge...more sneaky ways to get people into contracts.  That's all they do.  The actual service is shoddy compared to the effort they give to those other things.

What is happening to this country?  Where are the opportunities?  It's not that there aren't jobs out there...this situation makes it impossible to get paid for anything unless you are already a billionaire.  You have a cool idea for cell phone users?  Forget it...you won't be able to make a living by the time you try to implement it.  Why?  This rule, that rule, copyright this, copyright that, pay Apple 30% of your sales so they can put it on their site?

All of this needs to change.  So much needs to change.  All of these bullshit industries:  financial, medical, cell phone, education...all of the biggies.  They are bloated, they are ineffective, they are sucking up ALL of the money that can be made out there.  They take just about all of our money and treat us like shit.

I'm tired of it. I just want to give up and play piano 24/7.  Every time I try to do something cool and creative, or have a nice idea that can not only be profitable AND help people, AND make everyone happy...I can't do it.

I love this country, I really do.  But I don't see that hope anymore, or the opportunities.  It's too hard to do anything.  All most people have the strength is taking care of their families, and that's becoming exhausting now.  Anything more is too much effort, too much of a struggle, too much willpower.

Anyway...another post by me...I don't know why I vent here :P

I don't quite understand this.  This guy is an American citizen, but Thai born.  While in Colorado, he posts online a translation of a book that is banned in Thailand because it says bad things about the king.  When he goes to Thailand for medical reasons, they detain him and sentence him to prison for 2 years.  Isn't the US supposed to not allow this?  What power does Thailand have over a US citizen?
