DC Gamer Club / LIMBO: Free (to keep) on Steam for a limited time
« Last post by Deozaan on June 21, 2016, 04:50 PM »
Steam is offering LIMBO for free, for a limited time.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/48000/

Sometimes they have "free weekends" which are more like free rentals, meaning after the promotion period ends you'll no longer have access to the game. But occasionally they have time-limited giveaways where if you claim the game within the promotion period, the game is yours forever. The wording is vague, but I believe this is a case of the latter, and that you'll own the game after the promotion ends.

Thanks for the response Iain. You were courteous. I was curt. I apologize.

In regards to (a) and (b), that does seem to be an accurate summary of the events. Just for clarity, I read your review of The Secret in its entirety. But yes, I did deliberately ignore almost everything you wrote in response to my initial question--not actually because it was too long (as implied by the tl;dr), but rather because I was annoyed by another screenshot response with the "proper text" hidden behind a spoiler. I fully admit that that mindset (being annoyed with the image and being too annoyed/lazy to open the spoiler to read your response) is a fault of my own. Making me scroll past a large image to find the spoiler box, then having to click the spoiler box to show the text was, to me, just unneeded extra work. In my mind, it wasn't worth the time and effort. Again, I suppose that says a lot more about me than anything else.

Anyway, there is no rule or guideline about having to post via text instead of image(s) of text. Go ahead and continue posting images. I'm not your boss, nor do I have any authority to make rules here.

It just seems to me--and this is just my opinion--to be inefficient and a total waste of time for yourself and anyone else trying to communicate with you. I see it as a waste of your time because not only do you have to take the time to take a screenshot and upload/attach it, but then you also have to copy and paste the text anyway and hide it behind a spoiler. Why not just copy/paste the text to begin with and be done with it?

I see it as a waste of everyone else's time because, depending on the circumstances, they have a fairly large image they have to work around (which, as previously mentioned, can cause issues for the visually impaired, but also for people browsing on non-standard devices, such as mobile devices with a small screen, or text-only browsers, etc.). They also have to do more work (opening the spoiler box) to get your message to appear as text if they want just the text version of it. The nice thing about HTML is that the text can easily be modified to display at different sizes, in different color schemes, in different fonts, at different widths, etc., all dynamically and according to the needs/wants of the person reading the text. Images don't work that way. They have preset fonts, colors, formatting, and sizes. Though you may be able to zoom in on an image if you need it larger to see, this can lead to blurring. And you may not be able to zoom out if the image is too large (e.g., viewing the site on a smartphone) requiring the hassle of having to scroll horizontally and vertically multiple times to be able to read each line in its entirety. In my opinion, it's just inconsiderate to include large bodies of text in image format on a (text-based) forum, and is only "acceptable" or "tolerable" or "enjoyable" for bite sized consumption, such as memes. There may be a time and a place for using an image instead of dynamic text (such as when dealing with printers), but online discussion boards are not the time and place. Again, that's just my opinion.

And finally, do you even know for sure if text hidden in spoilers is available to be found by the forum's search function? It used to be that "spoilered" text wasn't even included in quoted text when making a reply to someone else, so it wouldn't surprise me if the SMF software's search function completely ignored spoiler text altogether.

To reiterate: This is all just my opinion. You do what works for you. I'm not trying to start an argument/debate on the topic, nor am I trying to insist that you change your behavior to what I think is best. I apologize for my earlier rudeness. I appreciate your measured and thought out response.

And to everyone else reading this: Sorry for derailing this thread and wasting your time.

tl;dr

There are members of this forum and other fora who have vision problems. Posting a screenshot of text is really unhelpful. Regular text is nice because it is easy to resize, or recolor (for better contrast, etc.), depending on the needs and wants of the person attempting to read it.

I can't be bothered to do the extra work you are requiring of me to read what you said.

What was the point in including the screenshot of the review? The only part of it that was helped by being an image was the image of the video clip, but even that was too blurry to read who the quote was attributed to.

« Last post by Deozaan on June 12, 2016, 09:02 PM »
Thanks for that... I'm checking it out... but I think I'm all in. :)
Oh yeah, I'm ALL IN with the non-refundable $1000.  Now for the hard part, waiting for it to come off the assembly-line.....   :D

The only two things I still have to research are the maintenance/parts and acceleration.  If they're in high demand and your car needs a part... are you going to be able to get it?  Are there going to be mechanics certified to work on it, or how easy/hard is it to work on?  Especially with those exposed wheel mounts.  And they mention top speed... but not acceleration...

Anyone who paid/reserved for an Elio car... Have they given you any updates? 2014 came and went as AFAIK nobody has gotten an Elio 2014 model. Are they releasing this year for sure? Next year? Or is it vaporware?

Yes, I reserved, and yes, it's still on.  Some of the development has taken longer- understandable as they're the first startup to make their own engine in 60 years.  But the date has been pushed back to early 2016.  And it's definitely not vaporware, as they're in testing and going to trade shows and such all the time with the cars.

http://www.eliomotors.com/blog/

And now?

They're still posting stuff on their blog, but I don't see any easy to find details about the planned release date.

Thanks. I'll have to check this out.

There is this Slashdot article about a guy who created a simple 'hello world' dummy application in Visual Studio 2015 (C++). The resulting executable contains code that "phones home" to MS. Of course, MS can do what they like with software they provide to anyone for free. If you would ask me (and I know you didn't) it is even their right...just not in their right mind.

After taking a look, the telemetry calls are logging to the local drive, not phoning home as claimed.

https://www.reddit.c...ion_calls_to/d2wng2g

Yeah, I discovered the link in my OP from that Reddit thread (which was posted in the DC IRC channel). Emphasis mine:

hi everyone. This is Steve Carroll, the dev manager for the Visual C++ team.

Tl;dr: thanks folks for the feedback. Our team will be removing this from our static libs in Update 3.

Our intent was benign – our desire was to build a framework that will help investigate performance problems and improve the quality of our optimizer should we get any reports of slowdowns or endemic perf problems in the field.

We apologize for raising the suspicion levels even further by not including the CRT source, this was just an oversight on our part. Despite that, some of you already investigated how this mechanism works in nice detail. As you have already called out, what the code does is trigger an ETW event which, when it’s turned on, will emit timestamps and module loads events. The event data can only be interpreted if a customer gives us symbol information (i.e. PDBs) so this data is only applicable to customers that are actively seeking help from us and are willing to share these PDBs as part of their investigation. We haven’t actually gone through this full exercise with any customers to date though, and we are so far relying on our established approaches to investigate and address potential problems instead.

We plan to remove these events in Update 3. In the meantime, to remove this dependency in Update 2, you should add notelemetry.obj to your linker command line. If you’re generally concerned about phone-home scenarios, more information about how to configuring Windows 10 appropriately to your needs can be found here: https://technet.micr...t#bkmk-priv-feedback

Thanks.

I always felt people were overreacting a bit about the Windows 10 telemetry features. "Sure, it's a bit concerning," I thought, "but it's not that difficult to go into the settings to disable the most invasive stuff." Boy was I wrong!

Microsoft has released instructions on how to "manage connections from Windows operating system components to Microsoft services," and it's a doozy!

Not only is it incredibly long and complicated, but it involves a lot of registry editing and other advanced configuration.

The problem with USB cables, in my experience, has very little to do with the cable itself, and everything to do with the connector. If the micro USB connector gets bent out of shape even slightly, you can pretty much kiss the cable goodbye.

So all this bullet proof kevlar stuff probably isn't going to help with the problem of the Micro USB cable connector just being terribly designed and too fragile.

Is anyone having trouble with both the temp and condition automatically showing in the tray at logon? I have set both as 'Show icon and notifications' in Windows 7. Click "OK" in the Windows 'Customize' dialog. Log out. Login. Only the Temp icon shows. I obviously want both icons to show at logon time. Not sure if my Windows 7 is to blame here ?

Your screenshot shows that one is set to only show notifications, the other is set to always show the icon and notifications.

Did you know that Windows allows you to set the volume for different programs individually? Changing speaker volume, or even the master volume will not help if the volume of Skype itself is set very low.

Can't you run that regex code on the "text" variable from that highlighted line of code?

Specifically, use:

Code: Javascript [Select]
  1. // Set the regex string
  2. var regex = /(https?:\/\/([-\w\.]+)+(:\d+)?(\/([\w\/_\.]*(\?\S+)?)?)?)/ig
  3. // Replace plain text links by hyperlinks
  4. text = text.replace(regex, "<a href='$1' target='_blank'>$1</a>");

Between lines 154 and 155.

They should also have a convenient link somewhere. As of now, you have to remember it.  There's no link (at least that I've found) conveniently situated on the site.

Your post reminded me that they are all listed on http://gog.com/connect but only if you're not logged in.

If you are logged in then it will only show you the games after it has verified your Steam account and whether or not you can (or have already) redeem(ed) them. :-/

I can't even check right now because of high traffic.  They need to figure out a better way to facilitate this IMO.

I guess I'm not the only one who was reminded about it due to the sale. . .

For what it's worth, I remember what two of them were:

I wonder if they'll announce which games are part of the GOG Connect feature as they come (and go) or if they expect us to just check it every few days to make sure we don't miss anything.

Looks like they expect us to check every few days or risk missing out. I had forgotten about it but checked again today due to the sale and there are 3 new games in the list (and all the others have expired by now). Makes me wonder if I missed any others. . .

DC Gamer Club / GOG Summer Sale Begins
« Last post by Deozaan on June 08, 2016, 12:26 PM »
I usually don't post about huge sales anymore, since I figure most people who are interested are probably already aware of them, but this time GOG is doing something like what you might see Steam do for a Summer sale.

First of all, and totally unlike Steam, you can get a free copy of System Shock 2 for simply visiting their site using the GOG.com Galaxy Client.

Secondly--and this is the part more like Steam--you can earn XP and badges from completing certain tasks. But again unlike Steam, this will earn you actual free games instead of just stupid wallpapers or emoticons like it would on Steam. The first one you can get, meaning the one you will most likely be able to qualify for, is Spelunky

Check this page to see your progress and ways to earn XP for free (as opposed to earning XP from buying games during the sale):
