Who is this Stella Nuder  ;) Is she the jealous type? Is that why no one will date mouser? Who knows the darkness that lurks in the heart of men? The Shadow knows...

Yeah, it really is priceless. The Russian accent really works for me. However, I can *also* hear Yoda saying something along the lines of "Da forz iz strong in diz one" or something along those lines when I look at it!

Disclaimer: I am useless at cat LOL-ise...

Thanks for clarifying that, iphigenie. I agree, that is an odd oversight. I might have to take a look at ClearContext afterall. The one thing that really concerns me is the overhead when running plug-ins in Outlook. Each one just ramps things up...

rjbull - it's an auto-link to ehtyar's post - the new forum software adds it to quoted posts, rather than duplicating pictures and attachments everytime a post is quoted. So if you click on the link: (see attachment in previous post)
It takes you back to Ehtyar's post (and the screenshot that has been replaced with it).

Oops. Didn't read the key last line in your post:

Is there a tool for comparing folder contents and tell me if the files are identical and sort all the unique files into one folder.

I don't *think* either LookDisk or DoubleKiller Pro will do this... Be a killer feature, though! Keep your eyes on XYplorer, come to think of it (note the link is to the road map for the developmental future - finding dupes is pretty far down the list...). The developer is working on adding a duplicate file finding feature to it and, as it is a file manager that is built on a search engine, he might be willing to consider adding this capability in.

Best I've any experience with is shareware called DoubleKiller Pro. DC member BrotherS gave it two thumbs up in a mini-review here. Another option is LookDisk. This is a tool that combines text and file search with duplicate file detection. The link is for the last freeware version (2.5). The latest version is shareware and is available from Iconico. I've got the latest version installed but have not really used it for this purpose - already had the DoubleKiller licence!

The hat turned up... over a year after it went missing

It's difficult to cap that. I guess it'll just keep making headlines!

Yeah, but try to keep a lid on it, OK?

General Software Discussion / Re: Conflicting results from Chkdsk -- Why?
« Last post by Darwin on September 28, 2008, 10:26 AM »
Yesterday, I thought I'd check to see how things stand. (You know how it is... poke into something in a idle moment, spend the next month wishing you'd left well-enough alone.)

Oh, how I identify with that!

I've had this happen to me before as well (I'm now on WinXP Pro Sp-3 but at the time was on Sp-2). I concluded that I trust the boot scan over the "read-only" scan done while windows was running. That was at least a year ago and the drive is still fine. FWIW, I've occasionally run CHKDSK from within windows since then and the error isn't there... No, I will NOT run CHKDSK right now to check on this (see your quote, referenced above)  ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: 'Everything' is one FAST file search engine
« Last post by Darwin on September 28, 2008, 09:47 AM »
Wow. After posting above, I downloaded and installed Everything. It is impressive. However, I'm not sure why the indexing feature is necessary, given the speed of non-indexing alternatives like LookDisk, SearchGT, FileLocator Pro/AgentRansack, BareGrep Pro, etc.?

I expect it will replace my BareGrep Pro demo

BareGrep Pro is so easy to use, unbelievably fast, searches and displays content (if you want it to), and doesn't require indexing, though...

So in a nutshell, I'm willing to go through the trouble of downgrading to Windows XP Pro, even if I have to "pay" to do this to avoid what I think is the "higher price" to pay for incompatibilities, time etc.

Fair enough, fair enough... I hear you about XP Pro, too. Considering that I upgraded to it kicking and screaming (loved and still love 2k), it's turned out to be a wonderful OS.

General Software Discussion / Re: South Park Mac vs. PC

The only thing that made me chuckle was Linux saying "I'm Linux you idiots" and PC and Mac laughing when he says "Shutup! I'm awesome and you know it".

Incidentally, File Saver is, AFAICR, a British company that does this as well (I bought an earlier version in 2004, taking advantage of one of their "sales" and have never known the software NOT to be on sale).

Yeah, I don't know what to think about that... I've run across this before and have been annoyed then, as well. However, I haven't had any negative experiences with vendors doing this, yet (knock on wood).

Heh, heh, nope! When I bought in February the discount was for survivors of the US economy recession!

FWIW, I did the same thing (bought a new notebook with Vista pre-installed with the intention of installing XP Pro). That was a month and a half ago and I haven't bothered with the downgrade. Unless you're in dire need of software that won't run under Vista, why downgrade? I ask somewhat rhetorically as I was on the same path myself... The answer that I now would give is: "Why indeed?" I have my perfectly functional XP Pro notebook at my disposal for the software that falls into that category.

I really, really like Vista... the magic ingredient seems to be RAM and Graphics card. I've got 3GB RAM and 512MB dedicated video memory. It's very, very quick and stable.

Welcome to DC, wwdj, and thanks for telling us about Nomadesk. When I have some time, I'll give it a whirl. For now, as much as this kind of solution appeals to me, I'd like to get everything caught up WRT my current backup strategy, which is based on external harddrives, etc. Once I've gotten my computers synced with the harddrive, I'll give the on-line solutions a whirl

After I posted the above note, admitting to my dimness, I did exactly as you suggested and laughed my bag off!

I guess I'm a lil slow, took me like 2 minutes to get the fun razor joke :P

I had to explain it to mouser before he got it. So I guess you're one of the other two cats who "getz it 2."

took me a while too but when I said it out loud (and slurred everything together :P) it clicked

Thanks, Tom  :-[ I just tried that and finally got it  :-[
