thank you very much for the replies here, Mogware Support (JohnRen).

i apologise for not bringing the ACDSee issue to you attention but it was something i didn't mind working around so kind of forgot about it.

if i encounter anything else i'll be sure to get in touch.

thanks for a great free util tool.

that's how i understand it to work with most things - if not everything other that pc stuff.

if you took a faulty mp3 player or tv or whatever back to the store you got it from you'd expect it replacing there and then - or a refund. no questions asked. well, maybe a bit of a discussion first but i'd be surprised to be told i've got to wait 4 weeks for a replacement.

i just wonder if the terms and conditions pc retailers show to their customers are actually valid. i know they must have a terrible time with loads of things being returned - but hey, they chose to go into that line of business (one of the reasons i wouldn't do it).

anyway, i'll shut up because i have no idea. i just think it's unfair.

i like the extension to connect it to diff tool to compare two versions

i didn't know that.

it monitors any file type - i've tried txt files but not doc.

and you can turn the popups off. or most of them depending how you've told it monitor things.

thanks for that RedHat. i'm still not entirely sure what the retailer is obliged to do. sending things back to the manufacturer sounds like an unreasonable way of doing business - i can't imagine high street shops telling customers they had to wait 4 weeks until a replacement arrived. maybe that's because high street shops just like being nice though.

i had no idea about Directory Opus have 'live search' going to set it up right now.

it's a sad tale but it's another example of how computer hardware retailers have their own set of rules.

i'm no expert and i might be talking complete rubbish but isn't it the UK law for the retailer to replace the faulty product - like there and then on the spot? not make an excuse that they have to send away.

that's what it seems to look like when i read the 'customer's rights' in newspaper columns every few months, and yet all computer retailers seems to have their own set of rules that they like to print out on the back of receipts.

i think you'll know more about this than me, Carol, but i wonder about it none the less.

looks interesting nudone

even though the link is looks correct
it loads as: http:///
instead of
http://www.mogware.com/filehamster/

(in FF & IE - or is it my funny machine again?)

the link should work now.  :)

oh dear. i'm either not working in a conventional manner or FileHamster just doesn't do what it claims.

i can't get it to successfully make incremental backups of a simple jpeg file - the program prefers to delete the previous backup instead. quite useless.

maybe there is some conflict on my machine?

CORRECTION:
it appears that making edits using ACDSee seems to confuse FileHamster - if i make the same edits with Photoshop then the program works as expected.

so, i'd advise that you do a few test runs with the files and programs you'll be using before trusting FileHamster completely. other than that i thinks it's great.

saw this over on 'shell extension city' this morning: FileHamster - just the right tool to let you save different versions of files you are working on. so i know it would be great for 'digital artists' but i assume it will also be very useful for coders.

FileHamster provides real-time backup and archiving of your files while you work. It enables you to monitor specific files on your hard drive and automatically create incremental backups whenever those files are modified. It also enables you to store notes about the changes that have been made, allowing you to quickly locate a specific revision or provide a detailed account of the work you've done on a project.

this isn't really of much help but i can snap windows on top of each other - i'm not running vista but i wouldn't have thought that to be the problem.

'vista glance' by Konstantin Artemev supports tagging of any file. it's a bit like 'find and run robot'.

the tagging feature isn't perfect in that it's easy to break the tagging association by simply moving the file to a different location using explorer (maybe this will be fixed in an update).

here's the link: http://www.vistaglance.com/

donationcoder generously donated vmware to me many moons ago but i uninstalled recently whilst messing around with my computer.

so, i thought i'd try out 'virtualbox' before putting vmware back on.

i've just put xp into, updated and tried out internet explorer 7. everything seems to work fine. it looks like it will do what vmware will do after you make the right changes - like with networking. currently, the sound isn't working - this did work with vmware straight away so at the moment vmware seems better for me.

but virtualbox is free and it looks like you can run vista inside it, not sure if you can with vmware at the moment. doesn't look like you can run any apple operating systems with it - unlike vmware.

i'll keep it on for a while and see what happens.

edit:
yeah, stupid me. i didn't enable the sound correctly, it works fine now.

if you use a simple text editor like 'notepad' you can create your grid - the important thing to do is when saving the file put the name in quotation marks and include the .grid extension.

so if i had just made a grid and was going to save it with the name test01 i'd select 'save as...' from the file menu, then in the 'file name' field i'd write this exactly:

"test01.grid"

and then hit save.

if you don't use the " " quotation marks you'll not apply the .grid extension an you'll end up with a file called 'test01.grid.txt'

it's always good to be charitable. i'm still charitable now, but playing the hero eventually doesn't really do you any favours. if you have the luxury of being able to help out and expect nothing in return then i think that is a very commendable way of doing things. personally, i think there comes a point when you start to question if your generosity is being taken for granted - not by all 'clients' of course.

it sounds like a common thing for computer fixers to go through the stage of wishing to help out at their own cost. how long this lasts will probably depend on what other commitments they have and how many times they see someone that can easily pay for a service get away with paying nothing at all - simply because you let them.

i'm wondering if there is something kind of unique about the world of computers. people take software for granted a lot of the time and expect to pay nothing. people will often expect a friend or neighbour to fix a pc for free. there appears to be a common lack of appreciation involved.

« Last post by nudone on February 10, 2007, 09:41 AM »
Well, at work I press scroll lock all the time - it's part of my KVM's hotkey (uncustomizable).

But, I would have to say that the "right-click" key is the most unused key on my keyboard.

The other two that are right up there are right-ctrl and right-alt, in that order.

Kevin

you are right, kfitting. these keys are so useless i had completely forgotten that they were there: alt-gr (or right alt), right winkey, right click menu key and right ctrl.

i can honestly say that i think i've never hit the right winkey - not even out of curiosity.

if it's an older laptop you might like to try putting on win2k instead of xp (as me and f0dder were contemplating with newer machines). it would probably have to be quite a old one - i've got win2k on a pentium 2 laptop as it was unusable with xp installed on it.

BUT as you have already had vista on the machine i guess it must be pretty up to date so i'm not really giving you good advice.

can't vote as there isn't a 'scroll lock' or an 'insert'. i'd include 'pause break' but mouser found a use for that key. i guess numlock doesn't have much use if you don't use the arrow keys on the numpad - who does?
2198
quick question: would putting win2k on a dual core machine instead of xp provide any noticeable performance difference?

breaking things down on an invoice is a good idea, laughinglizard. i've done a print out of the 'work done' for that last few people so that they can see exactly what i did, i also make recommendations for what they might like to do next regarding their machine.

i'm not sure if doing this is appreciated but at least it looks more 'professional'. i do like your idea of stating the cost in the invoice and then showing the 'special' rate/reduction also.

firstly, broken85, i'd like to congratulate you on what may be the longest DC post ever (i'm sure someone can corroborate this) and i'll also congratulate myself for reading it all.

i was going to post earlier the question: has no one anything good to say about vista?

you've answered but for all your praise i'm still not tempted to run out and buy it. i'm half tempted but i think i can wait at least to the end of this year. if someone were to tell me that my programs would run quicker by a noticeable margin then i think i'd rush out straight away and hand my money over, but that doesn't sound realistic to me.

booting up faster sounds nice, and i think you have a very good point about the new organization of where things are in vista - there has always been too much clicking in windows trying to find the right thing, but then something so complex can't really pretend to be otherwise.

i'd assume that it might be a bit too soon to form an unbiased opinion of vista as the novelty factor is still present. when that wears off then a fair comparison can be made - or it may be just too late by then as vista will have brainwashed the user. i think that is what happened when i started using xp anyway. i was using 2k and i thought xp looked ridiculous, then i finally swapped and eventually thought 2k was too dull - but the truth is i could probably be using win2k right now and get everything done on my machine just as well - probably even quicker - maybe.
