Living Room / Re: Apologies
« Last post by mouser on October 29, 2008, 12:53 PM »
Glenn,

Stick around a while.

I appreciate this post and your spirit -- you didn't offend me i just thought it was a very *very* weird post.  But then i have a friend who is quite fond of erotic origami so i'm used to people with strange hobbies.

I think the post made a few people uncomfortable, especially since we have kids on DC, but i think more importantly is the fact that it just didn't really fit in with most of the posts here which have to do with computers, and when you add it all up -- it was just a bit borderline appropriate.

Anyway, like i said, i hope you'll stick around and not completely give up your unique personality.  I guess what i'm saying is, i hope you decide that even if it may be that some small portions of your sense of humour will be viewed as outside the scope of dc, you'll also have faith that some parts of it might fit in perfectly in time :)

i'd understand if you felt like it was asking you to compromise too much to stick around.. but i'm hoping not.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: My Computer and maybe a bug

I just never heard of that -- pretty clever!
Now i just have to figure out if i can get the context meny to show on such types of nodes.. i'll experiment and report back.

HOWEVER:
If you what you are trying to do is add the FOLDER for your My Computer directory, you can add the My Computer folder directly.  That would give you a right-click context menu on the folder.. but that may be slightly different than what you want.

as for borders.. i'll look into that too though i have to admit i had a hard time getting it to stop showing borders..

ok i guess the problem was user error -- i had both long day and long date clicked in options.. i cant remember if that was default or i set it to that.

Very cool -- i was especially impressed to see that you can load multiple copies of a plugin, so that you can create a bunch of these progress bar items which are quite fun.

Tiny bug:

I'm starting to come to the conclusion that less than a handful of people on planet earth are using this program of mine..
Anyway, i'd still like to hear how the newest sliding/autohide works for anyone, so i can figure out if i can go ahead and take this version out of beta soon.

Another minor update as i try to perfect the autosliding and hiding.

Living Room / Tower Defense Flash Game of the Week: Warzone Tower Defense
« Last post by mouser on October 28, 2008, 05:26 AM »
Ok here's a really nice new Tower Defense game called Warzone Tower Defense.

Very nice smooth graphics and animation, nice range of weapons and requires real strategy.

Also has a few TD features of note:
  • you can place walls and adjust route of enemies -- i always like this feature, adds nice strategy element.
  • you have some direct-application weapons -- i'm not a huge fan of this weapon style, which adds an arcade-like element to the game.
  • multiple maps to choose from

This is another example of where farr can help plugin writers with a simple new feature --
i'm going to add a call to plugins to let them know when user has HIGHLIGHTED a result item.  With this you could have your plugin manually set the statusbar however you want when the user highlights an item.

xbeta's basic idea is not bad..
Axem already scans subfolders..
so maybe a nice way to display everything is with a checkbox treelist, where the tree is the directory structure.

Living Room / An Idea About Starting a New Software Company
« Last post by mouser on October 28, 2008, 03:49 AM »
Hi everyone,

I wanted to bounce some ideas off you guys+gals about an idea for a slightly unusual kind of software/freelance programming company idea and hear your thoughts on the matter.

This isn't really directly related to DonationCoder, except to the extent that i've met a few really good coders on DC that, like me, don't fit all that well into the normal corporate or traditional work-for-pay freelancing framework.

My idea is focused more on programmers who are incredibly highly motivated to work on projects that they are excited about and have strong opinions about what program ideas they are interested in, and who want to maintain some control/interest in the resulting work.

Ok so the idea is basically this:

  • Programmers come up with program ideas that they are interested in working on -- or solicit ideas from possible funders.
  • People who have some money to "invest"/"fund" who read about an idea they like then partner up with the programmer to "fund" development time.
  • The funding money will be much lower than it would cost this person to hire a high quality professional coder to write the program if it was to be exclusively owned by them as a client.
  • Instead, they would be paying the coder a smaller amount in return for being a partner in the project -- a 50% (or whatever) owner in the resulting code.  Both people would be involved in the program's development, and both would be emotionally and financially motivated.
  • The main motivation for working like this is my growing feeling that for many of us, we need to believe in and be excited by a project idea in order to be fullfilled working on a project -- but that if we are we work our hearts out and really enjoy the work.
  • In terms of a larger "company" -- i was just thinking that it's useful to have a sort of collective of a some other coders or even (gulp) project managers, who can oversea any given project, give advice, make sure it's on track, etc.
  • The use of the resulting programs emerging out of any such project would have to be discussed and agreed upon ahead of time -- i.e. will it be open source, will both funder+coder be able to use the resulting product independently?, etc.  This may be the trickiest part of the thing.  But I'm envisioning that most of the appeal will be on working on a product that both people will share revenues from, like a website (or that either no one expects to make money).
  • Another way to summarize what i'm suggesting in a simpler way is that the idea is to avoid a "client+hiredgun" approach, and move to an "equal partner" approach where one person puts up some money and the other puts in the initial coding time.

Thoughts?

Now if I can just get it to stop spawning multiple ones

try latest (1.76.02)
21615
try the latest beta, see if it fixes the problem (https://www.donation...arCommanderSetup.exe)

By the way im liking this sound for my menu click sound: "Windows Pop-up Blocked.wav"
21616
as phitsc points out, hitting tab puts the items "Path" in the search box -- so one solution would be to use the label as the path value for each item.

however the general thing you are asking for, has been asked for in a different form by others -- which is to let a plugin catch when certain keys or hotkeys or context menu choices are chosen for a particular result.  and i think the thing for me to do is implement this feature.  this would give plugins the ability to react to keypresses targetting a specific result and let them decide what to do about it.
21617
Also, it doesn't look like you fixed the thing where if you trigger the menu to appear and don't want to select anything, it doesn't disappear.  At least have the ESC key get out of it, but ideally you want to click elsewhere and the menu goes away.

i figured out what causes it and i did fix it for most cases.  just checked and i can see that if you have your LBC minimized to tray instead of docked, then it doesn't behave right.  i will try to figure out a workaround for that case.

I have a great idea for you:

Scan each ahk file and look for a comment near the top of the file of the form:
; Synopsis: This line will be shown in the Axem list next to a file's name if found

take it from me, kill all use of the apostrophe ' punctuation while you still have a chance -- such names just make life harder.  Call it Axem.

Looking very nice.

If you cancel the directory selection, you end up with:
ScanFolder=

Which basically tries to scan your entire hard drive!
It should check for "ScanFolder=" and force reselect or default to the Axem directory i think.
