General Software Discussion / Re: Office 2007 Compatability Pack
« Last post by Armando on October 02, 2007, 10:32 AM »
I recently installed the above mentioned pack and discovered that on my laptop, a celeron 1.5 with 764mb ram, that word ran very very slowly and was using heaps more resources than usual.

Don,t know, but did you install all the "High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack" ?

General Software Discussion / Re: Shareware that don't have freeware replacements

I tried 'System Rescue CD', 'Insert', and 'Tom's Boot Disk (floppy). I could not get anything intelligent from any of them, but I heard they are fantastic - for those who know how to use them.

I also tried the Ubuntu live CD. Looks great, but how do I get access to my hard disk?

Try gparted or partimage. You'll need a CD burning software to make your boot CD or DVD. With gparted, if you end up at the console, just type "vesa" for your graphic driver — but everything is very clearly explained on the screen anyhow.

You could definitely use your Ubuntu CD (it will take much longer to boot the CD though...). I don't have Ubuntu now, but just find the partition manager : System -> Administration -> GNOME Partition Editor.

You could also read these short explanations :

1.10.7 Hard Drive
1.14 Windows
(http://ubuntuguide.o...g/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty)
But I’m pretty sure it’d be easier and quicker with the gparted or partimage editors.

My experience leads me to question whether they have any idea how their software works.

 ;D

This reminds me off that joke :

A computer salesman, a hardware engineer, and a software engineer are driving...
A computer salesman, a hardware engineer, and a software engineer are driving in a car together. Suddenly the right rear tire blows out, and the car rolls to a stop. The three men get out to investigate.

The salesman says, "time to buy a new car!"

The hardware engineer says, "well, first let's try swapping the front and rear tires - and see if that fixes it."

The software engineer says, "let's just try driving the car again, and see if the problem goes away by itself."

You could always try something like trxox (http://www.sonicspot...com/trxox/trxox.html) or virtual909(http://www.sonicspot...l909/virtual909.html). Don't sound that great, but better than nothing. I don't even think they can do triplets. Might have to stick to 16, 8, 4...

There are other solutions:

Hi Tomos,

Actually, no... I live dangerously : I backed up my database and replaced the other version (must say that I checked the forum for any cry for help, complaints about corrupted database and saw... nothing). So far : no problems whatsoever. :)

Have fun!

PS : my database is small : I don't keep as many things as I used to in there anymore.

I guess I will have to learn to use LINUX boot disks. I only get a strange command prompt, and then I have no idea how to get started.

Which linux boot disk are you using ?

[Off-topic] btw, if you want to work on your time, it's also good to record yourself and listen to the recording afterwards.
Also, even if practicing with a metronome is not that fun, it's a very good exercise (especially at very slow tempi)... one gets used to it and it can even become... fun :).[/off-topic]

That's why I settled on playing the samples on a loop
this is what I've always done and is pretty simple to do. If you can't find any dedicated drum machine just pick a sequencer, use the sample files or download some, and loop them... after that is should be pretty easy to play with the tempo, volume, pitch, etc.

Hi Tom,

Nice to see you here!

There are actually some threads here about Archivarius and I believe there are many  DCers who use Archivarius. Some threads and comments :

Archivarius

What is the currently best Desktop Search software?

General brainstorming for Note-taking software

I usually use X1 a lot but will use Archivarius to complement it; 1- double check on X1 searches, and  2- recourse when X1 chokes on a +350p. document. Archivarius is light and reliable, indexes very well (indexes MS word and pdf “comments”, which is important to me), but is certainly not as sexy as X1 and others… and misses a few  features I’d like too see (according to the developer or support person, these features will be implemented “soon”). Oh yes : support is good — they answered my emails very quickly (Darwin had the same experience).

Voilà!

PS : and Archivarius indexes EverNote's databases...  X1 doesn't really. :)

Yup. It's looking good now.

General Software Discussion / EverNote beta 2.2.0.372 has some nice new features
« Last post by Armando on September 29, 2007, 12:22 PM »
The new EverNote beta 2.2.0.372 is available for testing since september 17.

I’m using it right now. It’s got some nice new features…

Dear EverNoters!

It is our pleasure to announce the release of EverNote 2.2 Beta. New features include:
•   Opening and editing notes in separate windows ("out-of-tape notes")
•   Merging multiple notes
•   Google Desktop Search in EverNote databases
•   Enhanced support for international text input, including Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, and others
•   Customizable note views
•   On-screen drawing and shape recognition in Universal Clipper
•   Improved keyboard tape navigation

Many more fixes and improvements are listed on the Release Notes page http://www.evernote....ote/releasenotes.php.
Direct download page is http://www.evernote....?file=EverNote22Beta.

- The EverNote Team
http://forum.evernot....php?f=10&t=4782

 ….and some fixes.

My favorite new feature is probably to finally be able to open several resizable windows for different notes. Very convenient — I’ve been waiting for that one. I might be starting to use EverNote a bit more again. I also like the multiple notes merging feature and enjoy certain bug fix (e.g. : the universal clipper is now behaving properly : before, some web clipped images didn’t show when going through the universal clipper + the fonts didn’t have the proper size  — now everything works well!).  I don't care too much about the Google desktop search thing as I use Archivarius, but it’s a step in the right direction.  Etc.

You may want to review this before installing KAV or KIS 7. It's very long and I'm not saying it will happen to you, but you should know about it.

I wonder if anybody else had similar problems here... sounds pretty frightening.

I use AutoHotkey for many things, but... I haven't used it to remap hot-keys yet! Good idea.
In the other thread, hamradio also suggested using f2 and f3 to switch tabs. Works well for me.

AAaaaaaaahhhh!! Lanux. You see, I knew it was stupid! I just COULDN't find it!  ;D ;D
Like Curt, I'm willing to sacrifice the tab switching functionality for easier text editing...
Better than nothing, I guess.

Living Room / Maxthon 1.6.2 "ctrl + shift + arrow" annoyance...
« Last post by Armando on September 26, 2007, 08:07 PM »
Ok, this is a stupid question...  :-[
I could ask at the Maxthon forum, but I know that many forumers here use Maxthon.
I always use "ctrl + shift + arrow" to select words... But in Maxthon 1.6.2, this shortcut switches tabs. (Except when the cursor is in the address bar.)
It's a bit annoying IF all you want is to select words for editing. I've tolerated this for long enough.
Anybody knows how to fix that (by removing the "ctrl + shift + arrow" shortcut in Maxthon or... some other solution...)  ???
Thanks a lot !!!!
