Living Room / Re: What annoys you to no end?
« Last post by Josh on February 23, 2008, 05:06 PM »
This really annoys me. Its people who force themselves into your lane by riding up as far as they can in the ending lane. You know, the lane that had a sign 2 miles ago stating that it was ending in 2 miles. These people choose to push as far as they can past the end of the lane only to cut in front of everyone else. You mainly see this when there is a lot of traffic and people just have to get that extra 10 seconds saved by not merging where they should have.

5. people who treat ADHD as an excuse for their/someones behavior, and state they/someone has the condition based on their ill-educated perspective.

Please tell me you are not one of those people who thinks this is not a real disorder?

Blue screens are always recorded in the event viewer. Check eventvwr.msc (start - run) and look under system. You will see a listing for bug check. The first hex code is the one you want. You can get more detail on the code from the windows debugging tools at microsoft.com

I just had this idea for this thread so let's see where it goes. Basically, just post what annoys you more than anything in the world.

For me, since I was just organizing my movie collection, and I realized how annoying DVD cases and media cases in general have become when you purchase them from a retail outlet of any kind. You have to go through 4 different protection mechanisms before you can access the dvd itself. You first have to peel off the plastic wrap. Then you have to peel off the sticker(s) on the outside of the case. This can be on up to 3 edges of the case. Then you have to go through the latches which are designed to make it harder to steal a disc from the case (the companies claim they are to prevent the case from being opened by kids, although my kid figured it out in 20 seconds. THEN, you can finally enjoy your movie. This is a travesty and one which has annoyed me greatly for years now.

Profile 1.0 and 1.1 will still be compatible with 2.0 discs, you just wont get the network content

OK, Backwards compatibility. What sense would it make for a modern company to not ensure backwards compatibility? I have a feeling that once profile 2.0 starts to make it mainstream in BRD players, we will see that all future players will remain compatible in the future. I just dont see an alliance the size of BRA making this sort of mistake.

wraith: There was no choice when it came time for DVD if I remember correctly. Exclusivity didn't cause a problem for DVD to be adopted fairly quickly. I agree, it does suck that both couldn't exist simultaneously. The problem was that dual format players were twice the cost, and rightfully so, and as such people were forced to choose a format based on which studios supported which movies. Choice, in this aspect, would have been the death knoll for both formats. With major studios releasing exclusively to each format, it didnt help either format.

You realize that DVD had this exact same startup right? HD is the next revolution considering HD TV's are becoming more and more common. If not for just the standard 720P (Not everyone can afford 1080p). I think more of the future bluray manufacturers are going to realize that firmware upgrades are something they should put into their players. Look how successful the PS3 was with it. I would love to be able to upgrade my player as new features are added. Heck, the DVD player I own (Oppo DV-981HD) is one of the few to take on this aspect. I've been able to upgrade the XviD playback capability when the new version was put out. This is the way of future, no arguing with you there. However, Blu-ray has already taken advantage of its interactivity layer. HD-DVD did not. Many of the HD-DVD discs I trialed were simply a menu that had some motion to it, no interactivity beyond that. Blu-ray on the other hand has the whole BD-Java system which has provided quite a bit of fun and interactivity. Check out Fifth Element BRD. Its a classic example of what BD can do and thats not even the best of its feature-set.

I honestly think the BRA is going to be smart and make profile 2.0 and on backwards compatible. Yes, there is no reason to do so, but not doing so would be like shooting yourself in the foot. They made the mistake with the 1.0/1.1->2.0 mess, but I think they will fix this in the future.

HD-DVD was more consumer friendly in that it didnt have as strict of requirements for the content protection (HDCP), however, it was still there. Blu-ray, aside from having the space and bandwidth advantage, does have far more as far as interactivity goes (The Blu-Java layer). The fact that you can now store uncompressed (or lossless) audio tracks on the disc is an obvious plus. The picture is readily expandable should something beyond 1080P ever come into play in the near future. In the end, I honestly feel that while less consumer friendly, blu-ray is the better choice.

Congrats on 3100 posts jgp ;-)

But yes, I would hope that toshiba joins the Blu-ray alliance so we can further spur development of this new format. I, for one, can't wait for a new profile 2.0 compatible player to be released so that I may purchase one.

2 years? I think in under 6 months we will see afforable blu ray players in the standalone model.

Heck, just look at this $150 US PC model. Others are sure to follow.

$150 US Blu-ray drive

Thats right folks, Toshiba has officially announced that HD-DVD is now dead. It will cease production and marketting of its format due to several large studios and retailers switching to blu-ray. Will Toshiba switch to the Blu-Ray Alliance (BRA)? According to them, no, but we would hope so so that we can help spur the development of this superior format.

On that note, a moment of silence for all the unfortunate consumers who ended up with a now antiquated HD-DVD Player.....

Living Room / Looking for a good bartenders guide
« Last post by Josh on February 17, 2008, 05:12 PM »
I am on the prowl for a good bartenders guide or mixed drink book/software program (one with search capability). As of late, I have become more and more attracted to making mixed drinks with various liquors and liqueors.

Any help is appreciated.

Linux comes with far more than any windows install does. Yes, you can get a BARE BONES (Read: No functionality) linux install done in about 20-30mb, but what would you be able to do with it?

OK, Nero aside, what else can define bloat? It seems this thread has gone off on the nero tangent, but what about other programs?

I have to say, I used to be a winamp fan back in the days of the early 5.0 release. I then came upon Zoom Player which played everything I wanted (only player to support all formats I used plus dvd), but then it became plagued with repeated codec issues. I had to repeatedly reinstall codecs to get it to play files properly. I have since moved back to winamp and havent looked back. Once Winamp adds DVD playback, I will be completely satisfied with it.

OK, let me ask this, why should apps be as small as that in size in the modern age? Is hard drive space that expensive or lacking? I mean, I have over a TB in my pc, and most modern pc's have 500-750 standard now. I mean, what is another 17MB going to add if it gives you so much more functionality-wise?

So, is Nero itself a bloated application or is the nero SUITE bloated? I would like to see a burner only option too, but I dont consider nero ON ITS OWN to be bloated. Quite the contrary. Yes, I have to download ~200mb of data, but I only install about 20-30.

App: You just described the opera "web browser". A more appropriate term would be suite, but they dont have that title. I dont know any other browsers which have an email, torrent, or chat client built in. Heck, even mozilla realized this and shutdown the mozilla project.
