(I don't recall if this is in the silly thread or not, but there's a line that has been crossed when I slosh across the yard to drown the pups 3 or 4 times a day... :P)

saw a video lately of an Irish Christmas/Winter where they have a snowball fight with fistfulls of water scooped up from the pool size puddles on the paved paths (cant for the life of me find it again...)

General Software Discussion / Re: backup strategy
« Last post by tomos on December 26, 2015, 05:52 AM »
As usual with your queries kalos, more info would be helpful !
e.g.
  • How important is the info to you?
  • How much do you want to backup?
  • Are you always on the go or usually based in one location?

I need to backup specific files and folders in my laptop realtime on cloud. Or maybe there is a better backup strategy in case something goes wrong?

Much better would be online plus regular rotating local -- to ext hds or even usb sticks, one of which is always kept off-site.

IIUC they get 1.5mm squared....
I suppose you could frame it :-\

The old art world was a dysfunctional place (how long has it been since art was for the people - probably mostly not since prehistoric times) -- but this would be a good expression of the new art world (anyone got a polite term for f.o.s.?).

A good publicity stunt all the same.

Just a note to say that there's been big advances with IQ lately -- new features, and *lots* of work done on improving the user experience (including the calendar: sync is not there yet, but planned before version 1.0).

Hm, a video? For what?

Newgrange that I asked you about. It's a 5,000 y.o. 'passage tomb':

Once a year, at the winter solstice, the rising sun shines directly along the long passage, illuminating the inner chamber and revealing the carvings inside, notably the triple spiral on the front wall of the chamber. This illumination lasts for about 17 minutes. [..] The sunlight enters the passage through a specially contrived opening, known as a roofbox, directly above the main entrance.

Nö!

The winter solstice is related to the sun's highest point on the particular day, which means "Dec 22nd at noon" which was around the time I posted here.  :P
hmmm, okay,
I (always) thought it was always on the 21st :-\

Wikipedia doesnt give any date, and says this
=>
Observances

Although the instant of the solstice can be calculated,[7] direct observation of the solstice by amateurs is impossible because the sun moves too slowly or appears to stand still (the meaning of "solstice"). However, by use of astronomical data tracking, the precise timing of its occurrence is now public knowledge. One cannot directly detect the precise instant of the solstice (by definition, one cannot observe that an object has stopped moving until one later observes that it has not moved further from the preceding spot, or that it has moved in the opposite direction)[citation needed]. Further, to be precise to a single day, one must be able to observe a change in azimuth or elevation less than or equal to about 1/60 of the angular diameter of the sun. Observing that it occurred within a two-day period is easier, requiring an observation precision of only about 1/16 of the angular diameter of the sun. Thus, many observations are of the day of the solstice rather than the instant. This is often done by observing the sunrise and sunset or using an astronomically aligned instrument that allows a ray of light to be cast on a certain point around that time. Before the scientific revolution, many forms of observances, astronomical, symbolic or ritualistic, had evolved according to the beliefs of various cultures, many of which are still practiced today.

Are you familiar with Newgrange in Ireland? (Looking for a decent video on it...)

I am currently using eM Client (again, not for mail), which seems to have no problem staying in sync with Google.
In another thread, app103 was very pleased with eM Client's calendar.  Softmaker have abandoned development, saying they would roll their enhancements into Thunderbird.  Does Tbird include any sort of calendar?

Softmaker installs Thunderbird with the 'Lightning' addon. Haven't used it myself so cant comment beyond that.

BBC Radio 4: Beyond Belief, 21st Dec. 2015

thanks  will have a listen.
someone online was wishing a 'happy Lucia' lately which got me rooting -- it's a Christian saints day celebrated in Scandinavian countries on December the 13th, which apparently was the 21st before the calendar was changed:

Her feast once coincided with the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year before calendar reforms, so her feast day has become a festival of light.[4][5]
-wikipedia
I suspect it was always a festival of light...

Eumir Deodato - Also Sprach Zarathustra

(you may need youtube unblocker)

was hoping to find a video of the scene where this was used in Being There (IMDB link) with/by Peter Sellers. But no joy there...

EDIT// was looking for this on amazon (.de & .co.uk) it's available quite cheaply on vinyl -- even in the 1973 pressing, or as mp3, but not on CD :-/
Dont mind digital, but would prefer to be able to get it in better quality format (ideally as well as mp3).

I'm going to break the rules already :P
the story is this:
three priests on an island -- one dies (Father Jack, he died of the drink); in his will he requests that the other two spend a night with his corpse (IIRC, because he has a fear of being buried alive). This leads to Father Ted's most poetic moment...
