Multi Photo Quotes / WikiQuotes support
« Last post by mouser on January 11, 2009, 10:22 AM »
The Wikiquote.org website collects quotations and they have a lot of nice ones.

There already exists a screensaver for windows that displays quotes from this website, called WikiquoteScreensaver.

The WikiquoteScreensaver actually has a very cool and powerful (C#) configuration tool for letting you search for and download quotes you like from the site, and then saves them into data files that the screensaver uses offline.

Since they did such a great job with the quote search/downloading tool, what i decided to do was just add support for reading the data files to the Multi Photo Quotes screensaver.

So if you want to add quotes from Wikiquote.org to Multi Photo Quotes, install the WikiquoteScreesaver from their website, and download some quotes, and then save the .wqxs file(s) with your downloaded quotes into a Books\ subdirectory, and MPQ will read them as normal.

Multi Photo Quotes / Re: Commandline Helper Tool (Plugins) Coders Requested
« Last post by mouser on January 11, 2009, 08:41 AM »
I've successfully used the free commandline tool pscrape to fetch random quotes on demand from the www.quotesdaddy.com page

It will be in the next release.  If anyone wants to try scraping other random info please post what you find.

(note that you can use this feature to show other info besides quotes).

New version is up.. i think it's looking pretty good.  Tons of options to customize what is displayed and how.

Still waiting for volunteers to code some commandline tools for dynamic web images/quotes; hopefully i won't have to do it myself :)

I was talking with dc member ewemoa and was thinking that maybe it would be nice to get the programmers who hang out at dc to get together their amazon.com book wishlists, and encourage potential donors to contribute/join the dc site by buying one of these books for a coder.

It seems to me that is as good a way of helping the site as any (by helping a coder who helps the site), and may be a method of donating that some people find safer and more rewarding.

ps. when looking for book reviews i always start at amazon -- they aren't going to be the most reliable or detailed, but it's a good first place to look:

This isn't very helpful but i looked at it a few years ago in the bookstore -- it looked good but not great and i decided to skip it.

i will post clearer instructions on how to use this, seems it could be made easier to use.
make sure you go to the options and enable the books you want to use.
21015
The new crop option offers an alternative to the previous stretching display.

Let me explain how it works.. if you choose to stretch images, then every image will be stretched without regard to aspect ratio to fit in a full panel -- you can set thresholds for aspect ratio stretching limits in the other options but this just affects what sized panels are allowed.

The new cropping option will never alter the aspect ratio -- it will enlarge or reduce the image in order to make sure there are no blank areas, and then choose a random region to display to fill the panel.

In this case you can still enforce the aspect ratio of allowed panels, and you can also set a limit to how much you want to allow the program to scale down the image to fit the smallest axis.

So if you set the minimum reduction to 0% then the image will be reduced such that one edge (horiz or vert) of the image will always be fully displayed, and the other axis will be cropped randomly.  If you set the minimum reduction to 100% then it will never shrink the image and will just pick a random region to display, equal to the size of the panel/tile.

More new options for all you users that exist in my mind :)

Find And Run Robot / Re: Idea for Incredibly Helpful Feature
« Last post by mouser on January 10, 2009, 02:57 AM »
after checking the source code.. i think maybe #1 (farr autochecking other drives to work with portable drives that change letters).. i may have been mistaken.. i may have added that feature to my Launchbar Commander tool, and not farr.

i will add both features in the next version, that should solve the problem.
21018
i emailed him a zip file with the program so he should be all set.. but now i have to figure out why trendmico is being so ridiculous.
21019
woodmouse, the trendmicro plugin only seems to work for Internet Explorer -- are you sure you are using FireFox?
if you use FireFox you might want to switch to SiteAdvisor which seems better: http://www.siteadvis...com/download/ff.html
(note that it *only* works with firefox).

ewe's Akete plugin is a perfect solution for what you are asking as far as i can tell..

it seems like all you really need is the drive letter replacement thing.

there are a couple of solutions:

1) FARR has built in code to resolve changed drive letters, so that if you refer to:
X:\Programs\Notepad.exe and it doesn't find it on X it should try C:\Programs\Notepad.exe then D:\ etc.
If thats not working then i can try to find out why not.

2) I can certainly easily add a replacemnt that will expand to the drive that farr is running on.. like have it automatically change every $:\ to the drive letter that FARR is running on.

lanux, McAfee SiteAdvisor has always seemed pretty good about dc website:

This is some trend micro thing.. I can't find an online test for it.
21022
that is really strange. i mean i could upload another copy to another site.. but really i dont understand what trend micro could be complaining about?  do you have some options to tell it how paranoid to be? what exactly does it say about not wanting to download the file?

Developer's Corner / Re: Is forward declaration of methods necessary in c?
« Last post by mouser on January 09, 2009, 01:21 PM »
this is a question that would probably create some real debate among long time c/c++ coders.

let's start with the most important answer:
in scenario 2, you do not have to use a forward declaration; putting one in won't hurt but won't "do" anything for you, technically speaking.

once you accept that, you can get to the more interesting debate about style.

the more modern stylistic approach in c/c++ these days, which i am a big fan of, is to have separate header (.h) files and .c/.cpp files for every source code file (and including the header at the top of the .c/.cpp file).  in your header file you would then get into the habit of having forward declarations for EVERY function.

with this approach, you aren't using forward declarations only when you need them, but out of habit and style, so that you don't have to figure out when you need them and when you don't, and you don't have to worry about order of declaration.

many coders also like having the forward declarations as a kind of summary of the functions declared below (or in the .cpp file if we are using paired header-source code files).

now there are still cases when defining classes where you have to worry about forward declarations, and even worry about the order of declaring classes, but they tend to be few and far between when you get into the habit of always using .h vs .c/.cpp pairs.

Multi Photo Quotes / A media pack i'd like to see.. Computer Hisotory Screensaver
« Last post by mouser on January 09, 2009, 09:59 AM »
I'd love to see someone put together a media pack for the screensaver (or a standalone screensaver) with quotes from the history of computers, along with a ton of public domain pictures of early computers.

Note sure where to find either the quotes or photographs, but if someone feels like working on this i'd be happy to help show you how to use the packaging tools to make the screensaver.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: PuTTY (preliminary discussion)
« Last post by mouser on January 09, 2009, 08:51 AM »
of course the *ideal* solution would be if the plugin could keep a list of ALL registry paths of all the dif putty versions, and all file paths, and then display the combined list of all sessions found.. but that seems like maybe more effort than its worth.
