sweet, Stephen, let's do it.

Why would SOPA care about people talking about software?   ;D

What...I can't talk about how ribbons suck and traditional toolbars were awesome?

OK, I'm excited...
I have a new website, I have a nice mic setup here at my computer, I have a Skype account, I have live streaming configured, tested, and good to go.  So how about a live DC talk show?  What would we talk about?  How would it be scheduled?  Who needs to be involved?

I just have a couple of requirements for now:
--cursing IS allowed, this is not for kids
--Opinions are welcome, passionate statements are welcome...you can be offensive with your positions, but no personal attacks or unreasonable anger
--Be willing to LISTEN to different and offensive opinions without harming yourself psychologically
--be funny if you can be, everyone loves a good laugh

As you can see, I want this to be about honesty, not about how smart we are.  What's REALLY on our minds?

I remember we tried a podcast years ago, but this should be better since it's live and interactive...and I'll be playing devil's advocate most of the time.  Nothing personal, but my goal will be to try to provoke you (in a nice, funny way hopefully...I will have to learn this "skill", so I'll probably go too far sometimes).

Thanks Edvard!  I appreciate the research.

Yes, I've been eying the RME stuff lately.  Maybe I'll just break down and get it, it'll cost me over $1000.

I like Echo.  I've used their brilliant laptop card, the Indigo IO, for years now.  It's a beautiful product, simple, small, it just works.  But they haven't really updated much at all recently.  However, they definitely are one of those if it aint broke don't fix it type of companies.

That Maya one is new to me, looks interesting.  It's also relatively old (~2-3 years) but at least it's PCI-e.  Drivers support Win7 64, that's good.  Still, I'm tempted to just go RME at this point.  I've used the cheap stuff for years, maybe it's time to get serious?  I'll have to think about it.  Can't beat German quality.

Just to clarify, are you looking for a multi-track solution for home recording, or just looking for something better than on-board sound?
This topic has gone far enough off that it might warrant a new thread.

Just sayin'  :-[
(ah...it's my topic, so i don't mind)
Well, I play my VST piano module live through the audio card's ASIO interface, so low latency is a priority.  When I tried Maudio products years ago that were USB connected, I couldn't get the latency down to acceptable levels.  Then I got this PCI 2496 card, and it worked just fine.  But that was also my really old 2002 computer, not the new one I have now (well, it's almost 3 years old now!).  So latency is a big deal to me in live playing.

Next comes the inputs/outputs.  I don't have too much of a need for many outputs, but the more inputs the better.  Most of the cheap stuff seem to have 2 inputs and outputs vary.  It must be easier to put outputs on a device than inputs, I don't know.  Or maybe most people like more outputs, and I'm the odd one.  Anyway, that's another thing I consider, but it's not as big of a deal as latency.  I do record using this card once in a while, but it's usually just me playing or maybe one other person.  I'm not planning on using it as a studio a lot, I have friends with much better equipment for serious recordings.

Then, the form factor.  Initially, I liked the idea of everything being contained on the internal card, so it all just stays with the computer.  But some of these more expensive cards come with breakout boxes.  I don't mind that, they just tend to be expensive.  That's different from a USB box because the actual card is still installed on the PCI-express slot.  A usb card resembles a breakout box, but the heart of the connection is the USB, and I don't think that's as reliable as those cold connector interfaces on the motherboard.  But I have no definitive proof of that.  however, I can across some forum threads and that amazon review today that put doubts in my head.

Now...I gotta go back to the music store.  The clerk accidentally refunded me for three returned cables, but I only returned one.  Sounds like he got chewed out a bit by the bosses.  I have to go back and sign something.  Rarely do those things turn out in my favor, though!!

ok, paranoia is back...ON!  No USB for me if I can avoid it, see the review from amazon:
I purchased the MOTU UltraLite-MK3 Hybrid due to the added USB2 port and my need for more inputs and outputs. It appears to work perfectly fine in OS X (using FireWire), but booting into Windows, I failed to get it to work via USB on one system with Windows 7 64-bit and a Mac Pro running Windows XP 32-bit through Boot Camp. I've updated and re-installed drivers numerous times. Unfortunately I don't believe I'm alone with this issue since there are complaints about the unit's USB port on the MOTU user forums. Some people are recommending purchasing a FireWire card, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of getting the Hybrid? It's already past 30 days so I cannot return the unit (I unfortunately only discovered the broken USB functionality recently) and MOTU technical support is impossible to get to. The Phone Technical Support line is always busy and if you call the Customer Support line (which is separate), they tell you essentially to wait your turn (meaning busy signals for hours and no contact). If you want to file an online ticket, good luck on having someone look at it. MOTU does not supply PDFs of their manuals so if you lose the one you have, you are lost. I wish I hadn't bought this expensive piece of garbage.

The reason M-Audio hasn't updated is that the 2496 has been good enough or better than much of what has been out there since they came out.
Everybody else has finally caught up, as you can find 24-bit/96kHz cards just about anywhere for a good price, although M-Audio are still THE solution for decent-quality affordable home recording.
Personally, I have been drooling for a 2496 for YEARS (now the 192... sigh), sorry to hear yours is going south.

If you just want to listen to music, Creative has been leading that pack for many years, and they've evolved WAY beyond being just a gamer's soundcard, what with their THX-enabled home-theater grade X-Fi series, among others.
I haven't personally checked out their USB offerings, but I do know that USB audio has advanced quite a bit since the early days, and you can get the X-Fi Go! for about 30-40 dollars from Amazon, or spend up to 50 or so and get the X-Fi surround that's about the same size as a small external HD.
Check the product comparison chart here:
http://www.amazon.co...SB1095/dp/B0044DEDCA

I've been told to avoid Behringer.

I have no idea what anybody else is doing, but I'm sure Sony and Phillips have something...

Interesting, thanks for the update.  Yeah, the 2496 is doing fine, I really don't have any problems.  The instability I described above may be caused by something else like the motherboard.  So I'm still happy with the card.  But my complaint was the plugin interface, I'd prefer something more modern like PCI express so I have more options of where to place it on my motherboard.

But, i was just at the music store...I'm probably going to get a breakout type box like USB or Firewire for my next one.  I'm always too paranoid with USB stuff.  I had a bad experience with M-Audio USB boxes about 10 years ago with the drivers and latency, but all that has become a non-issue from everything I hear now.  I saw a MOTU usb box that I thought was really neat and reasonably priced.

I dont know your experience with this stuff so apologize if I'm not technical enough, or too techinical!

It's a USB DAC (Digital to Analog Converter).  You plug it into your USB port and it converts audio into analog signals the line input on your stereo/receiver can reproduce through speakers (or, if you use the headphone output, directly through headphones).  It requires no drivers (it's just a USB device) and you get another volume slider exclusively for it (in Win 7 at least).  It takes the place of a soundcard (a soundcard on a desktop PC usually is a PCI DAC).

This device is great for boosting the audio quality output of a laptop (what I use it for).  It bypasses the crappy soundcard on the motherboard and allows you to use any powered speaker or amplifier system.

It does not allow as much configurability as built in soundcards do (or did... it's been awhile since I've had one).  But it works on any computer and the sound quality is fine.  Here is the in-depth review I read a few years ago when deciding to get it: http://www.head-fi.org/t/456945/first-impressions-nuforce-udac-usb-dac-amp-with-line-out-and-s-pdif-out

And here is the product link to the new version:
http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconudac2/

And, just to give you more options and confuse the issue, here is a wireless audio cable that uses the same principle as the uDAC above.  Both are excellent in my opinion (you use these separately, they dont stack):
http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-W1
Thank you!  That explanation was perfect.  So it does replace the sound card essentially.  I like that, I may experiment with it at work since I'm there all day long.
I'm also in the market for a new pro level sound card.  I'm using an M-Audio 2496, which is pretty good, but years old.  It's a little unstable with my Windows 7 64 bit, but nothing serious.  It uses the PCI slot because it's so old.  I'm looking for something with a more modern slot connect, like pci-express or something else.  I don't like USB connectors for pro sound cards because I've had really bad luck with USB and audio years ago, and it was unstable for me.  Sounds like it's mostly a non-issue now, but I'd rather have one of those motherboard connections, they just feel better.  However, I was surprised to see that M-Audio hadn't really updated this product in many years now, they are still selling the same stuff.  And other companies don't have many options for sound card alternatives.  And the ones that do are super expensive...the prices range from the Maudio cheap stuff ($100-200) to the very expensive ($1000+).  There's nothing in the $200-1000 range.  Very odd.

But maybe USB is the way to go, maybe someone has a USB 3.0 device.

More expensive, but just mentioning it because I have one and it's worked extremely well for me:  NuForce's Nudaq.
http://www.amazon.com/NuForce-uDAC-2-Silver-Headphone-24bit/dp/B003Y5LY1C/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1323654072&sr=1-1-spell

No pressure, if you're not into audio you're probably not interested.  Just throwing it out there!

(I use the nudaq from my computer into a receiver.  I assume the one mentioned above would do the same.  I would not expect these to power speakers directly (self-powered speakers should be fine.)
I may give that a shot.  I've never experimented with the next level of audiophile-ness, which is using a preamp like that.  Preamps are one of those things that most people look at the price tag and immediately think it's BS pretentiousness.  But there must be something to it, so I need to try it out.
kfitting, I don't quite understand how this device works.  Can you help me?
If I plug that thing into the computer USB port, does it become a new soundcard?  Or does the regular soundcard feed THRU that thing and into the headphones?  What if the soundcard is just shitty cheap soundcard that comes with the computer, does this thing help?  Or does it have to be paired with a good soundcard?

Today, I read the EXACT SAME STORIES in the news and watch them on Youtube:

Did you see this? That's precisely what Winston's job was, except now it's in near-real time.

OTOH, I don't believe this is actually new. I think it's been happening all along, but now (a) it's more in-your-face, more shamelessly done, and (b) we read more about it, which is partly due to the Internet, and partly due to (a).

Oh, and (c): we may read more about it, but the institutional press has become so corporatized that it no longer takes a stand on these issues or cares about them. What was a political scandal in the 70s won't raise a brow.

Daniel Ellsberg, the Pentagon Papers whistleblower, recently said that all the illegal actions Nixon and his henchmen took against him in 1971 are now legal. Just that, legal. And he was told by several editors that today neither NYT nor WP nor any other big newspaper would print documents like these. That's a big difference, too.

i agree.  It seems like it takes more courage today just to have an OPINION, than it was before.  And with the main media outlets being big businesses themselves, it leaves the ideas that circulate among the majority of the population with no public outlet (other than personal blogs, discussion forums, etc...other "raw" outlets).  So all the "news" we get is all stuff that we really don't have any involvement with.  Like if I go to the top stories on google right now, its all global military news, some sports, some tragedy here...and it all gets harped on constantly on TV, cable, etc.  But none of this stuff has anything to do with our primary concerns right now: what is in store for my personal future?  Job opportunities, education opportunities, local shopping, retirement plans, opportunities for kids, etc.  This is what I see most people concerned with on a daily basis.  A drone lost in Iran means nothing to us, really.  We are seriously not worried about it on a personal level.  Our military has plenty of money and people in place to handle that (not saying they do a good job, but it's completely out of our hands AND we have tons of other REAL things to take care of right NOW).

I mean, even when they talk about jobs, the language is always stock-markety...like, "Nasdaq gains today based on news that 30,000 jobs were created in December."  I mean, who gives a shit??!  Where are those jobs?  How can I get one?  How can I guide my child to get one?  What are the jobs?  Is there a major I should study to get that job, is there a certificate I can get?

What's the point of such vague, useless information?  It has no personal value, it doesn't have enough relevant details to even make it educational...so what's the point?  Just waste our time...maybe gets me to stop thinking about my job so I don't bother people.  I don't know.  It's all pretty worthless to me.

For those interested in the distribution graphs, it may be worth having a look at the Wikipedia article on Pareto.
One section reads as follows:
"One of Pareto's equations achieved special prominence, and controversy. He was fascinated by problems of power and wealth. How do people get it? How is it distributed around society? How do those who have it use it? The gulf between rich and poor has always been part of the human condition, but Pareto resolved to measure it. He gathered reams of data on wealth and income through different centuries, through different countries: the tax records of Basel, Switzerland, from 1454 and from Augsburg, Germany in 1471, 1498 and 1512; contemporary rental income from Paris; personal income from Britain, Prussia, Saxony, Ireland, Italy, Peru. What he found – or thought he found – was striking. When he plotted the data on graph paper, with income on one axis, and number of people with that income on the other, he saw the same picture nearly everywhere in every era"
fascinating.

Here's some more based on the graph below:

From what I can tell, the total net worth of the USA is $55 trillion.  The total net worth of these top 400 people is about $1600 billion.  So they have about 1% of the entire pie.  That's not so bad, I suppose, but they only represent 0.0001% if the US population.
Graphic.png

The difference between the population in general and the rich population is obviously huge, on the scale of orders of magnitude.  But that's to be expected.  It's not socialism or communism, after all.  That's not necessarily bad.  It could just mean there's plenty to go around.  What I would eventually like to explore is if there is indeed plenty to go around...why is it so hard to get to?  And what is the significance of that?  But I don't know how true any of that is right now.

Gini coefficient trend in the US supports your observation.

I also wonder what is going on with the income distribution on a global scale. Any data about that?
Yeah, that's a good question.  I've just started this "research", so I'm new to all of this.  But if anyone knows, please chime in.

I know we've had a couple of these threads already, and they aren't the most feel-good topics in the world, but I feel compelled to start another one.  I think about this all the time, I can't help it.  I would like this thread to remain civil and just stick to dry analysis and not let our opinions and feelings get too much in the way (even thought they will).  I'm also taking advantage of my new notetaker, RightNote, as far as doing research.  So here goes:

From 1950-1990, the wealth of the top 1% was the lowest of the century.  Now it is back to the highest it's ever been, and it is growing.  So if things feel different than it did when we were growing up, this is why.  Things really are different.  I was a child in the 80s and it felt like we were richer than we are now.  Not as much stress, easier to afford things, easier to get quality things.  It was easier to go to good universities.  It was easier to be charitable.  But now, such few people have sucked up an enormous amount of wealth, that those left behind have fewer opportunities and as a result we have to scrimp and scrap for anything that has monetary value.

What's a little scarier is that the trough you see below was preceded by World War II.  Our peak right now is back to the level it was at right before WWII.

Seeing as superboyAC liked it (our tastes are very similar) I downloaded RightNote and gave it a pretty thorough workout today. I like it enough I think I'll buy it and start moving stuff over.

I just wish they'd do a browser (FF or Opera) plugin for it that worked like Canaware NetNotes used to work before Mozilla broke it for the 5th time.

They can do clips. But it's not the same as tossing an entire webpage into it with a single right click.

Sweet!  The RightNote developer seems to be open to suggestions, we should suggest this to them.

nice tip, tomos!  I will have to start using that.

I'm pretty proud of my work on the status bar (most of it is copied from others).  The 4 little bars, when files and folders are selected, give visual information about:
I0527_ 031.png

1) left-top bar shows how full a 700MB CD would be based on what is selected.  Red means I went over the limit.

2) left-bottom bar shows how full a 4.7GB DVD would be based on what is selected.  Red means I went over the limit.

3)right-top shows the percentage of space that the selected items are taking up on their own drive.  Let's say I'm trying to free up space, that bar gives me an idea if I've selected a lot or a little of the total amount of space being used on the current drive.

4) right-bottom shows how much space my selection will take up as a percentage of free space available on the destination drive.  So, let's say I want to move 500MB over to another drive, and there is 600MB of free space available on the other drive...then this bar will almost be full.  If it turns red, that means I can't move my selection over there.

I just bought RightNote today.  It is currently my preferred information manager.
What about all the information you've saved in other programs?  Just have to guess what is where?
Well, i haven't really committed to one program yet, but I'm going to start with this one.  What I'm doing now is I have an area in the RN notebook where I bring all my other notes into, and then I'll re-file them from there.  I don't need all my notes from other programs urgently, so unless I miss it, I'm going to leave it alone.  I was able to bring in my old evernote notes with some fiddling (Evernote's restriction's, not RightNote).  So I had a bunch of stuff in Evernote that I brought in.  All the other ones: keynote, onenote, mybase, cintanotes...I'm leaving those alone right now.  I haven't had to go back to 99% of them ever anyway.  However, I have a ton of stuff in InfoQube that I'm not going to bring in because InfoQube's notes are very different that a regular notetaking application like RightNote.  IQ is more of a database/spreadsheet thing and the data inside is a lot more complicated.  Like, I have "interactive" data in Infoqube that is pretty sophisticated: my transcript is in there, with unit and GPA calculations that Pierre helped me with, I have Armando's project management database in there (with addressbooks, task items, and grids linking to each other), I have artist/album libraries in there.  There's no way RightNote can handle stuff like that.  I never used IQ as a general note collector really.

So based on that, my current information management is relying on Rightnote for general notes, CHS for collecting anything I copy, and IQ for sophisticated organizing and complex structuring.  And I'm not sure I would want to combine the features of either of them with another...I've learned to let that go.

Hmm...yeah, that is disappointing.  I, too, like to give Gates the benefit of the doubt most of the time because his humanitarian efforts, by quantity and $$ alone, is probably the greatest in the history of the world.

But it's hard to defend anything Monsanto related.  Hopefully, he can use his influence to prevent them from some of their bullying and unethical practices.  But you never know anymore.  I'm cynical enough to sour on even Gates at this point.
