Wow! That's an understatement, BTW. That's an amazing, and depressing, story, y0himba. Thanks for sharing it, and I hope that they don't manage to screw up porting your numbers across to AT&T. With luck, this will just be a bad memory by Oct.15th and a great story for family get togethers in years to come...

Sounds like it might be a coding snack challenge for skrommel...

Or if you want to try this yourself, have you looked at AceMacro?

How?  The asked question was only to post a question, not try and answer it.

Ah... OK, good point. I managed to miss that one in my first reading of your post  :-[

I'm actually quite shocked at how some members turn an innocent questions into a question about god.

No offense, Chris, but I think you're a bit naive - the nature of the question makes the topic having taken a religious turn inevitable.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Synergy: Sharing your keyboard and mouse
« Last post by Darwin on October 09, 2008, 08:27 PM »
Couldn't get MaxiVista to work (I was trying to install it under Vista and I could not get the VGA driver to install - tried run as admin, etc.). However, used the Xhirl Synergy Wizard to set up Synergy and... WOW! It's slightly smoother than Input Director and features like sharing my mouse and keyboard with non-Windows based machines AND sharing clipboard contents makes it a winner in my books. I didn`t check the footprint of Input Director, but Synergy`s footprint is ridiculously low (5MB under Vista, 6 under XP Pro).

Yeah - that's where the wizard would have come in for me  :o I'm just downloading a trial of MaxiVista - if it does all that it says it will, it sounds just what I'm looking for (but will stick with Input Director or Synergy otherwise).

Yeah, couldn't agree more, Kartal. I just spent 20 minutes trying to get Synergy to work (forgot about the Xhirl Synergy Wizard) and gave up and installed Input Director instead. I had everything configured and running within in seconds (seriously!). I AM intrigued by Synergy's ability to share keyboard and mouse across platform as I also have Linux and OSX machines on my network (and desk) and by Multiplicity's ability to copy and move files and folders... If all of this came together in one app I'd be very happy indeed!

Of course... the heroes of my youth (and, as it happens, Steven Jobs' heroes as well) have resorted to similar pettiness: Apple Corps. vs. Apple Computer. From the perspective of time, this seems really silly. Perhaps lil' Stevie "Wonder" Jobs learned a thing or two from the experience?

Apple are petty enough to sue... witness the legal action they are taking against a small computer school in Victoria, BC: http://www.theglobea...tory/Technology/home

Of course, if the school were forced to adopt a different logo it might not be the worst thing that ever happened to them... but what do I know?

couldnt they have told a white lie

To be fair to WS, he did write about it himself in one of his blogs (goodness only knows why).
Perhaps he thinks of his readers as friends, some certainly seem to think that way about him.

-cranioscopical (October 09, 2008, 11:14 AM)

Yes... I thought it a bit gratuitous as well, particularly considering his return was being touted (in the preceding paragraph) as signalling his re-committment to helping his loyal readers! Funny, too, Brian Livingston's take on the four stops Langa made during his motorcycle trip:

Fred's devotion to his readers is legendary. Even when he went on his dream summer hiatus in 2007, riding his motorcycle in a big loop around the U.S. and Canada, he spent time helping others. He chose four Windows Secrets readers around the continent to receive a full day of his personal help, free of charge. (His eight-part series documenting these Langa Housecalls is on our site.)

and Fred Langa's explanation:

My suddenly-changing marriage situation affected my finances: With the prospects of a divorce looming, my seemingly-secure retirement suddenly felt decidedly shaky. To help reduce the out-of-pocket expenses of the trip, I worked out a deal with the guy who'd bought my business: I'd make four business stops along the way (Colorado, Seattle, Toronto, and New Hampshire) to perform some work for him.

Don't get me wrong, I feel terrible for him (and had no idea this was going on until I read the newsletter this morning), but I'm not sure that WS should be airing his dirty laundry (even if he has done so himself, elsewhere) and giving conflicting versions of events, to boot! Had WS not linked to the blog entry, I never would have known.

Living Room / Fred Langa's back!
« Last post by Darwin on October 09, 2008, 07:20 AM »
Just got my Windows Secrets newsletter for October 9th, and the lead story is that Fred Langa is out of retirement and back to writing for the newsletter

Fred Langa has come out of retirement Fred edited the LangaList Newsletter for nine years and then wrote for Windows Secrets from November 2006 to May 2008 before he retired. Now he's returned! Fred's new LangaList Plus column will appear weekly, only in our paid content.

It's a bit sad, actually, as he's coming out of retirement because he is getting divorced after 35 years of marriage and needs to money  :o I guess that solo four month trip across Canada and the US should have been a bit of a warning!

EDIT: added some detail

Are logic and religion no longer science?

Religion is not science

- no, religion is usually not science. Here I used the word religion instead of theology, because that was the word used by the moderator, but this way I made it all unclear. Sorry! The science theology is most certainly open to any degree of exploration (and interpretation), I should think. The problem is that the scientist have to actually practice the theology, if s/he will test if it is valid. You cannot have a computer tell you the result, but will have to test & see for yourself WITH yourself! And that is usually not too easy without already believing, because theology includes all of your very life.

Fair enough and well stated

Surely any application that was in existence before the patent was granted is safe from prosecution - how can you sue retrospectively?

Sadly, I am pretty sure that you CAN sue retrospectively, at least in NA court. I hope you're right, though.

You're on fire, George! That was a fast response! You're right, though, I'm sure Apple's lawyers wouldn't even break a sweat drafting their arguments in a case like this. I have to say, though, that I can't really see what or how they are losing by having the dock replicated on other platforms. Next they'll be going after the Expose clones and the widget clones (not that they invented them but I'll bet they've got a patent application in). Of course, I'm getting ahead of myself again - they haven't done anything, yet and I hope they don't.

I hope Apple doesn't go after the other dock apps but given Apple's attitude and sue-happy legal history, I'm almost sure they will :(

Software patents are evil.

I hope you're wrong about Apple... if you are not, I think that going after small developers is petty.

They already did this with Y'z Dock way back when.

Oh crap!

<note as moderator> Please let's be careful not to let this go into the field of religion </note as moderator>

Are logic and religion no longer science? Yes, dangerous science, but science anyway.

I have spent the last fifteen years of my life asking all sorts of impossible questions, and believe I have had some of them rightfully answered - not by fools like Richard Dawkin, but by that heavenly voice that turned out not to be a thunder in the storm but a whisper in the breeze - but at the end of day (life), the question is not from me, but to me: What did you do?

Religion is not science and does not lend itself to scientific exploration. This is not in any way meant to invalidate religion or to denigrate the followers of any religion, it's a simple statement based on definitions... That's not why I'm posting, though. If I may, I think João was merely trying to forestall the kind of rancorous debate that could easily flow from posing these kinds of questions. I think that's the emphasis, not restricting peoples' right to express their views.

I may of course be VERY wrong  :o

But where is Veign's "One question" thread ohmy? We got good answers from fenixproductions  thumbs up over there.

It's actually in the newsletter -- it's the first item in section 2.

How to get a girlfriend in next life?

Telling ya, mahesh, a much more important question to have answered is: "How to get a girlfriend in THIS life?" I never thought I'd figure that one out, either, but when I stopped trying to answer it, the answer came to me!

What is the sound of one hand clapping?

'Oooohhh, I love it!' when it makes contact with my girlfriend's (bare) bottom.   :-*

(Sorry for cheating by asking a self-answering question.  A dirty one too.  Hey, if God can self-create, well...and there's no one dirtier than God.  He's the one who made us with dirty parts and dirty minds.)

Er... the expression "the sound of one hand clapping" does a have "dirty" connotation, but it usually refers to "Self-abuse" (to put it politely).

Veign's "One question" thread wasn't posted until after the newsletter was ready - I just didn't get around to posting it until later in the day.
