menu:

settings > preferences > file operations (left column) > deleting (tab)

you'll find most options there.

using shift key will delete without using recycle bin - using shift often prevent futher prompts appearing depending on the action.

i've not see that "fillename is too long..." error.

thanks for looking into the file sharing side of things, iphigenie.

i'd tried setting up a few rules inside 'pc tools firewall plus' using the tcp and udp ports specified by microsoft but it made not one jot of difference. i shall try your recommendations later what i get chance as they sound very likely to work.

i've tried jetico - no good. and i think i may have tried looknstop - can't really remember. we've covered a lot of this ground before elsewhere on the forum and i think i'm right in thinking that these two programs were tried back then.

at the moment zone alarm is back on - everything works and it's pretty simple to get working if only it wouldn't crash.

but i'm still going to give pc tools firewall plus another shot - just to see if the file sharing will work.

zone alarm for all it's faults still seems about the easiest to use - for what i need anyway - outbound blocking on stuff just so i have an idea of what's going on with my machine.

@Curt, i've tried a few things to try and find how outpost can still be there even though i successfully uninstalled it - outpost.exe isn't running so i assume the debris is elsewhere.

i'm certainly going around in circles but so far the least amount of trouble has come from these:

zone alarm (free edition) - i'd still be using this if it didn't like crashing after about 24 hours use, that's probably something to do with my machine.

agnitum (free version 1) - can't remember why i stopped using this - i think i'll put it back on.

pc tool firewall plus - this seems the friendliest i've tried so far - just can't get shared files/folders to work.

edit:
i've been reminded why i can't use agnitum - it's because it now refuses to install again because it thinks it's already running. fantastic.

interesting post by Zaine on his blog: http://www.thegsblog.com/?p=156

i'm not sure about linux taking over but i can see xp not retiring as soon as microsoft had hoped. perhaps we'll have two opposing camps - the xp gang and vista gang.

everyone buying a new machine will have vista, of course, but i can see that companies will have to keep supporting xp even if microsoft try to force it out. well, that's what i hope anyway.

that's sounds interesting. thanks, MerleOne, i'll try Sygate.

edit: computer says "no" to sygate also.

it seemed pretty sporadic how it would ask me whether something should connect to the net.

it was too good to be true. pc tools firewall plus is kind of getting in the way of me sharing files between machines - regardless of putting the same kind of rules in to it that worked fine with zone alarm.

this is madness.

on the restoring functionality issue - i wonder if you lose any program/files/settings after the functionality is returned...

if you lose nothing then i think vista may be the greatest operating system microsoft have made - in that no one will have to pay for it.

i remember using quarterdeck dashboard and cleansweep - on windows 3.1 - i think. of course, not using them anymore. they seemed like essential things at the time - so obvious they should have been part of the operating system. ghost was another thing that seemed so obvious microsoft should have included it with windows - i remember using it before norton took it over.

i remember using photoshop 4 for quite a while after version 5 and even 6 came out - pretty dumb but i liked how quickly it loaded in. it's still a pretty good editor i suppose even by todays standards.

i tried to get win95 working on a laptop not long ago as i thought it might be okay for internet use - didn't go very well so used win2k instead. but that would have been the oldest thing i could possibly have been using.

ghostwall was a little to minimal for my liking.

at the moment i've got 'PC Tools Firewall Plus' installed. so far, i like it.

it asks me if a program can connect, yes/no and remember. seems to work perfectly well.

you do have to register with a name and a genuine email so that you can receive the key that allows it to run after 30 days trial. other than that it's all free.

i've not tried doing anything advanced with it. well, when i say advanced i simply mean using shared folders on my computers - so i don't know if i'll have to manually change a few settings for that to work.

Living Room / Re: widescreen monitor question
« Last post by nudone on March 03, 2007, 02:09 AM »
the quick way would be to set the res at the highest it will possibly go to - this is assuming the options are only showing compatible resolutions that your monitor supports (i think this is the default way of doing it).

but, regardless of what you see in the options, whatever the numbers are for the native 'physical' resolution of your monitor - then that is what you need to set it at.

using the 'real' resolution of the pixels built into the monitor is the only way you'll acheive the sharpest text (or images). Yes, only this way. any other res isn't going to give you that crystal clear sharpness.

another thing is, have you got 'clear type' enabled? if so, turn it off when using the 'native' resolution if you want to see 'sharp' text.

i'm surprised that your graphics card only goes to 1280, are you sure this isn't the actual highest res that the monitor supports.

but the problem you mention of text being stretched horizontally should not occur if everything is set to the 'native' resolution - it wouldn't be a very good widescreen monitor if the physical pixels it has were stretched in such a way as to distort text.

have you perhaps been viewing things on your previous monitor in the 'wrong' resolution - so that the text was actually compressed slighty along the horizontal axis? perhaps you've simply got used to it and now seeing something that is 'correct' looks odd - i guess you'd have noticed such a thing already by looking at other peoples monitors anyway.

edit:

i see that your monitor's highest res is 1440 x 900. if your graphics doesn't support that then, yep, you definitely need a new one.

looks like a great little util.

i've had a quick go with it and i'll keep using it as my main infile search prog - but i don't do much of that sort of thing so i probably won't be a very helpful tester.

really nice idea though. i'm sure it will be popular.

i guess you are right.

just having one layer (on top of the background layer) would be a nice - oh well, nevermind.

over on cnet news.com

Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe's more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising.

i hope it will support layers and a few other advanced features.

perhaps it means to simply register, i.e. provide details of yourself but it doesn't require any other payment???

i tried it, Documeron, i didn't notice anything naughty happen with my system - but then i suppose i wouldn't.

anyway, it's a nice idea, but the way it's implemented is slightly annoying. having to scroll sideways through a collection of tabs to find the file category you want isn't a great idea.

there was something else that annoyed but i can't remember what it was now.

there's another program that does the same job, i remember Zaine recommending it but i can't remember what that is either.

Does anyone know of a good organizer for flash files ie .swf so that you can view it and organize and add comments to it so they can be found when you want it.

ACDSee can create thumbnails from .swf and preview them - and add comments.

nvm, not freeware.

are you sure, on their page http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ it says "Best of all it’s FREE. No catches, limitations or time-limits."

i've not installed it yet - will try later.

thanks, iphigenie, ghostwall also looks like it might be enough for the job, but i'll have to try that later also.

I think a killer feature would be one that has a "scanning" module which would crawl a bunch of directories you choose, find all the myriad documents in formats it can read (the more the merrier, if possible even word processor or other organiser files), then give you a list where you can tick all the ones you want to import, then import them...

very good idea.

i've removed Blink as it came up with a couple of false positives that i really can't be bothered with (it didn't like me playing mov files with KMPlayer).

just tried coreforce and i've removed that also - whichever rule i set it just wouldn't stop asking me if Maxthon was okay to go online. Way too much trouble trying to figure out why it's doing this.

so, i'm about to put agnitum outpost v1 back on and i think i'll stick with that until it does something really bad.

edit:
haha, no i won't. it refuses to install now as it thinks it's already running - even after rebooting. so goodbye agnitum outpost too.

thanks, but i've tried Kerio before on a few machines and i just couldn't get along with it. it annoyed me as it just didn't seem to know what was going on regarding stuff connecting to the net - changing the options didn't really help either.

at the moment i've got Blink installed. i like it so far, plenty of options there if you want them, specific port access, etc, etc.

i really don't know much about the other stuff it does, intrusion prevention, etc.

the wizards might be handy?

you do have to submit quite a few details to obtain a free serial - is this a big deal. you can always make stuff up, the email address is the crucial bit of info they need.

anyway, it's only been on a few hours so it's too early to tell but so far
