I don't get it -- how does this relate to Vmware Workstation, their non-open source desktop program?

General Software Discussion / Re: Benchmarked: Ubuntu vs Vista vs Win7
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2009, 06:23 PM »
Every benchmark ever created is attacked for being "not representative", so i don't think its fair to knock such things -- the site presented a mostly interesting set of comparisons.

The only benchmark i honestly view as absolutely irrelevant is installation time.. Unless you plan on reinstalling your OS once a week, i don't see why it really matters how long it takes you to install the OS.

Living Room / Re: Request for suggestions: Group Bookmarking Tool
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2009, 04:04 PM »
As many have heard, Magnolia suffered major data loss recently and all of the work i've been doing bookmarking and tagging reviews of donationcoder stuff seem to have been lost.

I generally avoid online services and use local applications for almost everything I do.. This is one of those few times when i didn't.  Bad mistake.

I'm not saying don't use online services for your data.. I'm saying don't trust them to preserve and safeguard your data.

this is wrong thread for this, but:
SC uses right click in image for panning image.
However there is a quick resize toolbar button:

All of the mug gift certificates have been mailed out -- check your emails from around jan 29/30 and let me know if you can't find.  Rather than send the mugs/shirts directly everyone got a gift certificate from cafepress and instructions on where to go to order your dc mugs.  Everything is paid for you just have to put in your address.

Developer's Corner / Web Page Layout Debate: Tables vs. CSS
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2009, 05:06 AM »
The AppScout website is a nice daily blog that doesn't get mentioned enough on DC.  Today there was a nice entry about some recent competing thoughts on using css vs using tables for laying out web pages.  I've had enough experiences cursing out css to consider myself in the camp that is not convinced that css is the holy grail..

This is all a lead-in to the pissing match in-progress between two groups of web developers. It pits tables against CSS (cascading style sheets). The prevailing wisdom has been tables are bad for you--bad for the environment. Using table is like smoking cigarettes... in a nursery school. CSS is touted as a much more elegant and controllable method (even though it isn't) of design. In 2009 only a schlemiel would use tables...
And then he proceeds to compile a laundry list of the largest most unbreakable sites around--and they're all using tables! Ron Garret adds a little fuel to the fire with point-by-point examples worthy of a closing argument on Law & Order (though on an otherwise awful looking page) showing CSS break where tables thrive.

The blog entry is pretty brief and points to the following essays arguing for using tables or css:

Just wanted to point out that Blackleo asked ahead of time if it was ok to post about his services and I told him that as long as it was in this section it was ok.

« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2009, 06:04 PM »
If you have some old hardware (scanners, etc.) you need to make sure there are good drivers for them if they are important to you.  many old scanners and other specialty hardware have not been updated with x64 drivers.

Coding Snacks / Re: Open files and rename or save as with new file name
« Last post by mouser on February 03, 2009, 03:24 PM »
I think this idea of a smart PDF file renamer is extremely useful, i've toyed around with writing it myself for a number of years but just never bit the bullet and i'd just as soon leave it for someone who is already familiar with working with pdf files.  I do think it's a great idea though.  Let us know if you find anything good.

rjbull's idea is not half-bad.. to combine a commandline text extractor with a renamer tool..

Let's start discussing some ideas.. if we are going to do a DC fundraiser in march it would probably be best not to overlap the GTO thing with that, so either go for something more manageable in feb, or plan for something bigger in april maybe?

Thank you for the update Joto.. It sounds really scary and we are all very very glad to hear that you are recovering.  The Joto tree postcard is funny :)

I think it's time for you to stop eating whatever crazy food you are eating that is causing this problem!

Part of the deal in receiving a NANY 2009 reward mug/shirt/etc is you have to post a picture of it, preferably in its native habitat (ie you holding it in front of your computer, etc.).

So let's see some photos!

Just a quick note that the elusive Wordzilla (aka Anderson) and I updated the forum search code he wrote (known as ZillaRank) to fix a minor bug that caused searching with multiple quoted phrases to fail.  Let me know if you spot any problems with it.

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: Teddy - A simple drum machine!
« Last post by mouser on February 01, 2009, 06:02 PM »
report after trying new version:
  • Installer didn't add a start menu item
  • Couldnt get it to change soundbanks until i turned off numlock key and then hit ctrl+numpad keys.
  • Why not let just regular number key pressed change the soundbanks and spacebar to cycle?  - why make user hit ctrl+numpad?
  • In the about box it would be nice if it had a link to click to open up this thread here, and maybe when you add start menu items, add a link to visit website that goes to this thread.
  • Double clicking banner goes into toddler mode well -- maybe it would be nice to have text on the banner saying "Double click here to toggle toddler mode"  -- you could show it for the first 60seconds only maybe.
  • On a multi-monitor setup if i made the mistake of running Teddy on one of my monitors, going into toddler mode damn near made me do a hard reboot because it was hidden behind a black screen and took over all control.  I'd suggest a few safeguards against that:  1) try to get it to do toddler mode better on multiple screen setups.  2) make a hotkey that can exit Teddy -- ctrl+alt+del like CrazyLittleFingers does would be a very good idea.

looking great though!!
