FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: New FARR plugin : FFTab allow to switch firefox tab
« Last post by mouser on February 08, 2009, 08:14 AM »
What might be nice is if your mozrepl interface from farr would support pcommand calls so it could be used as a kind of plugin-api for other plugin writers to be able to interact with firefox; perhaps with an additional command to launch ff if it's not running yet.

With such a thing it would be easy for people to write other mini plugins that can script firefox actions of any sort.

ps.
I really would like to get the FSubScript release included with FARR soon so that everyone who downloads farr has FSubScript stuff installed by default, and then kept updated through updater.  It would make it easier and more appealing for people to create these lightweight fsubscript plugins.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Terribly slow and buggy
« Last post by mouser on February 08, 2009, 08:11 AM »
Well these are great reports.. now that i know the cause of the slowdown i *may* be able to fix the issue.  Great detective work.

Regarding fixing the problem, there are 2 main possible root causes:
1) it's possible that the icon retrieval for missing shortcuts, done by windows itself is slow and can't be helped;
in this case i might still be able to have LBC determine that the file doesn't exist and show a placeholder icon instead of asking windows to figure one out.
2) it's possible that merely querying the shortcut .lnk file to figure out if its available causes the slowdown, in which case it might be hard to employ solution #1; seems less likely though.  In such a case the only fix would be a rather painful elaborate one of caching results in a node, OR providing an option in the folder node configuration that would instruct LBC to not even try to show icons for the files inside the folder.

Hopefully it's issue #1 that is the cause and that would be an easy fix.

Can i ask mayabelle and smilejack1 if you are willing to email me ([email protected]) so i can touch base and send you test versions to help me see if i can fix the problem?

DesktopCoral / Re: i cannot put short cuts in dock, why?
« Last post by mouser on February 08, 2009, 08:04 AM »
Although Windows seems a bit inconsistent about this -- in general it tends to shove desktop shortcuts out of the way of the docked corals unfortunately, so the program is more useful for reserving space for other programs rather than shortcuts.

On the other hands I will point out that if you want to have a space for "shortcuts" docked to one side of your screen, what you might want instead of Desktop Coral is a docked launch bar thing, like Windows Built in Quick Launch, or True Launch Bar, or my very own Launchbar Commander.

ahhh that is a clever thought 40hz..   it really didnt occur to me that the problem would be some kind of antipiracy thing, but i suppose its possible.

as 40hz says, try disabling the onboard sound chip from bios, see if that cures the problem.

Developer's Corner / Any PHP coder bored for a day can help me make a dc forum mod
« Last post by mouser on February 07, 2009, 12:43 PM »
There are 1 or 2 mods for the forum i'd like to implement that i wouldn't mind having a little help with.
You don't have to know anything about the forum code, i can just describe a few functions i need and if you do those i'll do the rest.
Anyone interested?  Not major work, less than a day, just a few hours really and kinda fun stuff.

Credit needs to be given to this Bookmark mod by AƤron and this other bookmark mod by Leipe Po.

What i did was take those mods and extend the concept to a more general form of thread "marking"/tagging system and added some more features.

Note that i went ahead and added a Rating system.
Currently ratings are 100% private -- i.e. when you rate a thread it doesn't affect anyone else and isn't shown to anyone else; we may change that later.
For now, just think of it as a separate bookmark folder.
When you "Bookmark" a thread, it doesn't get added to your list of rated topics, and vice versa.

Note that the Ignored Topics list will keep a thread from showing up in your list of Recent or Unread topics, but the topic will still show up if you browse a specific forum section.

Site/Forum Features / Ignore Thread and Improved Bookmark Mod Implemented
« Last post by mouser on February 06, 2009, 04:33 PM »
I've finished implementing a (long requested) Ignore Thread mod and improving the current Bookmarking thread mod; will be uploaded soon.

I've done it in a way to make it easy to add other User-topic annotations, so such things may come next, like a Rating system.

if you want to leave that disabled, add +\ to the end of any search to explicitly find matching folders instead of files.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2007 / Re: New Getting Organized Experiment?
« Last post by mouser on February 05, 2009, 03:47 PM »
One of the things i agree with Paul about is that one should be wary of any big elaborate "System" constructed by one person with a book to sell or an infomercial promoting it.

Like diet fads and excercise devices, there is a huge incentive in such cases to try to make everything sound like its a brand new revolutionary system that must be taught to you by a single cult personality in order for you to gain the benefits.

On the other hand, I'm an old fashioned fan of books, and a belief that a single author with a book can communicate deeper more thought out ideas in a book than is possible in a blog post summarizing an idea you were discussing over dinner.  Both have their place.

As for productivity methods.. I guess i would put myself in the camp of people that believe that:
  • Its worth trying to be more productive
  • There are some fundamental universal ideas in productivity that if you understand you can work better and more efficiently, and that these are worth learning.
  • There is no one best method.  Different people work in different ways and that much of the game is finding the small tricks and techniques that help you work better in the style that you do your best work in already.

General Software Discussion / Re: Benchmarked: Ubuntu vs Vista vs Win7
« Last post by mouser on February 04, 2009, 06:33 PM »
There are a tonne of cross platform apps out there that they could have run. Sure then people would go and poke holes in those particular setups but it would still be a huge leap closer to "real-world tests".

fair enough -- they could have tested real work applications, that would be helpful.  that's not really a knock on the benchmarks they ran, but rather a need for additional benchmarks.
