General Software Discussion / SearchMyFiles - Nir Sofer releases file finder
« Last post by rjbull on February 26, 2009, 03:56 AM »
Nir Sofer, one of the most remarkable free utility programmers on the Net, has released a new program, SearchMyFiles v1.00:
Description
SearchMyFiles is an alternative to the standard "Search For Files And Folders" module of Windows. It allows you to easily search files in your system by wildcard, by last modified/created/last accessed time, by file attributes, by file content (text or binary search), and by the file size. SearchMyFiles allows you to make a very accurate search that cannot be done with Windows search. For Example: You can search all files created in the last 10 minutes with size between 500 and 700 bytes.
After you made a search, you can select one or more files, and save the list into text/html/csv/xml file, or copy the list to the clipboard.

SearchMyFiles is portable, and you can use it from a USB flash drive without leaving traces in the Registry of the scanned computer.

Text Monkey looks great [...] but it would wipe out my software budget for the year

I can't remember the full feature set of the Lite version, but suggest you check it out, as it's free.  Also, the Pro version has been featured as a discount offer on Bits du Jour.  They sometimes repeat offers, so it would bear watching.

[Edit]
You might try freeware TextMorph.  Warning - I have not tried this one myself!
Capitalize 1st Letter of Sentences
This tool will capitalize the 1st letter of each sentence it finds.  Sentences are found by periods, exclamation points, and question marks.

You might want to look at its command-line options and make a short cut to a batch file, activated by a hotkey, to make operation as smooth as possible.

I was testing it for a week and forgot about it very quickly. As far as it might be great for notes, it is not usable for folders.

Well, that sounds pretty damning!  Thanks, I'll steer clear of it...

General Software Discussion / Mouse gestures program looking for beta testers
« Last post by rjbull on February 24, 2009, 08:04 AM »
JoeJoe, author of freewares such as the excellent ArsClip, Rename Master, OkayKeeBees etc., has made available beta versions of new program MouseWrangler:

JoeJoe's freeware utilities

 MouseWrangler, a new program

I've created a new program called MouseWrangler - for mouse gestures. While holding the right mouse button, mouse motions are detected and a series of motions will trigger an action. Currently, a keystroke or a series of keystrokes will be simulated for each gesture.

See the Public Betas page for more information and to download. This program is still in the Beta stage, but it's currently stable and functioning well.

A program that reads existing text in Windows clipboard, converts the case of the text to one several different options (UPPERCASE, lowercase, Sentence case, Initial Capitals, tOGGLE cASE) then pastes the text back to Windows clipboard.

Any ideas? I have to change the case of a few hundred little bits of text, so I need to make the process as simple as possible.

Clippy.  You can set it up with one particular action as the default, and assign a hotkey to that action.  Then in your app, mark text, press Ctrl-C, press Clippy hotkey, press Ctrl-V, and your old text is instantly replaced by your new text.  It's the most streamlined app of this type I've seen.  I think Boxer Software's TextMonkey Lite can do it too (I have the Pro version, which certainly can), but you have to Alt-Tab back and forth.  And, as observed above, mouser's CHS can do it, but again needs several keystrokes in its present form.

Has anyone looked at Stick for Windows?

Stick is a Windows application (Windows XP/Vista only) which provides utilities such as folder explorers, web browsers and notepads in tabs that attach to the sides of your screen (called ScreenTabs). ScreenTabs are highly customizable tab-shaped windows that let you access commonly used utilities quickly and easily. I use Stick daily and it has changed the way I work. Download it and see if it helps you the way it has helped me (it's free, by the way)    [...]
Note Tab
Note TabEnter richly formatted or plain text notes into note tabs. Each note tab is associated with a text file of your choice anywhere on disk. It offers basic word processing functions but more readily available than your average word processor.

I think ClipMagic can do what you want:

What is ClipMagic ?

ClipMagic is a powerful Clipboard Extender and Information Manager for storing Images and Text, either automatically or manually in a categorised format, with details of the URL if the text is from an Internet site.

I tried it for a while, but found I didn't really use the auto-category feature.  I went back to ArsClip and CHS for general use.

I still have to have the self-discipline, and time, to actually add a description...  :(

The latest XYplorer (BETA) gives you a way to select a description from a user-created (unlimited) set of ready-to-use descriptions. Spares you the typing... ;)

But the user would have to set up the boilerplate text.  Is there any semi-automated way to import it from e.g. FILE_ID.DIZ, PAD files, or whatever?

When I want to send the text of an error message to a helpdesk of the software supplier  I need to send a screenshot captor image or retype the message manually...

Have you tried pressing Ctrl-C with the focus on the error message?  I think that should send a text-only version of the message to the clipboard.  If you want an image as well, you could try CopyMessageBox by Thyante Software.

I am also a serial downloader and often I find myself trying to figure what is a particular file doing in my download folder.

I know that feeling!   :D

So I finally settled on using the Descript.ion system which is supported by Directory Opus - because it moves with the file - It's actually part of the file.

I don't think it's part of the file - DESCRIPT.ION is a separate file in itself, but intelligent file managers understand it and can copy the relevant line.  Total Commander does this too.  I just wish DonL had made XYPlorer's system to match  ;)

I still have to have the self-discipline, and time, to actually add a description...  :(

Vu-Bar maybe?

Yes, that looks good  :)  I see he also has a version that can be flipped between horizontal and vertical, for spreadsheets.  His links page has a link to Donation Coder - so he must be good   8)

Thanks!  :)

General Software Discussion / Wanted: line highlighter
« Last post by rjbull on February 13, 2009, 06:07 AM »
I have to use Web apps that present results in a table, which tends to be eye-boggling if you have to read across to match opposite ends of the line without accidentally slipping onto the next line.  I'm looking for something that highlights a line on screen in the same sort of way that lots of text editors do, highlighting the line the cursor is on, as per the image.    I could start looking at on-screen rulers, but please, does anyone know of a program more like what I'm looking for?

This is a bit like line highlighters from the days of DOS mono LCD laptops  ;)

Thanks...

In the old days of DOS BBSs, most files came as archives containing a FILE_ID.DIZ.  You ran programs that would extract FILE_ID.DIZ and/or DESCRIPT.ION files, and compile them into an allfiles list.  Very useful idea; what a pity "progress" has destroyed it...

pdftk
I have it with a GUI but it is a command line tool (cant remember does it come with GUI)

PDFTK can do all sorts of things with pre-existing PDFs, but I don't think it has PDF creation capability.  It's a command-line tool.  The GUI is a third-party addon, which, last time I looked, didn't cover all of PDFTK's features, just the most common ones.

General Software Discussion / Re: diff for RTF files, please?
« Last post by rjbull on February 11, 2009, 05:50 AM »
The author of ExamDiff Pro answered in the forum, suggesting using the catdoc plug-in.  This is what worked for me:

Name:           Rich Text Format [installed]
Extensions:     rtf
Application:    cmd /c C:\junk\EXAMDI~1\Plug-Ins\catdoc\catdoc.exe
Arguments:      $INPUTFILEPATH_SHORT

Original author of catdoc is Vitus Wagner but his page only has Unix and DOS versions: Free Software Directory page is here.  I suspect I had to use SFNs because catdoc doesn't support LFNs.

@fenixproductions:  I vaguely knew about WinMerge, but found this:

WinMerge is decent, but go with pretty much any of the others instead of it.

I was afraid someone would say Beyond Compare...  seeing I'm already a registered user of ExamDiff Pro   :'(   Have to wait for another DC discount   ;)

I've asked in the ExamDiff forum as well.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / diff for RTF files, please?
« Last post by rjbull on February 10, 2009, 08:09 AM »
Is there a program, preferably free, that "diffs" RTF files, please?  Both ExamDiff Pro and Total Commander's built-in diff utility show the formatting instructions as well as text.  I'd like something that ignores the formatting stuff and just shows the differences in the text proper.   Component Software's CSDiff does it in a way, but I don't like the way it displays results, and it seems to put them in a Word doc which has to be read by Word.

Thanks...

you can (supposing you program) write such a conversion utility yourself.

Alas, a false supposition   :-[

I have several temp files and if I run the command several time, will it not just override the file? I need to be able to append to the file.

In haste: you need an infusion of batch file magic - here you'd have to redirect the result to a file, but appending instead of overwriting, e.g.

lmod /L5 [$!] < temp.txt >> all.txt

instead of

lmod /L5 [$!] < temp.txt > all.txt

i.e. using double redirection symbol ">>" appends rather than overwrites.

Total Uninstall keeps a list of programs that it's both installed and uninstalled.  Not free, but a good product.

[Edit]
Not certain - I think Treepad Lite does set a Registry key, but they were intending to make a truly portable version one day.  MemPad really is portable, but its search features aren't quite as strong as Treepad Lite's if you have more than a few hits.  Having said that, both of them were probably conceived as relatively light-duty applications.  However, alt.comp.freeware's Pricelessware list of popular free software can be had as a Treepad HJT file, or at least it could used to be.

XY uses a database in an ultra-simple proprietary open source text format (it's described in the help file)

Apologies for not reading the Help file   :-[

I'd have preferred XY to use DESCRIPT.ION files for the comments, though I realise you're offering more features than a bare DESCRIPT.ION does, especially tags.  Is there any hope of bringing them together, at least by some kind of import/export conversion utility, external if necessary?

Augh, Crystal Reports!   :(

Suppose you have a file temp.txt like this:

apple
banana
cherry
damson
Line 5; date is last item 2009-02-08
feijoa
greengage

Then to extract the last item on line 5 with LMOD, do this:

lmod /L5 [$!] < temp.txt

which gives as output:

C:\zdir>lmod /L5 [$!] < temp.txt
2009-02-08

C:\zdir>

ability to send notes to others that run the same post-it app, by sending over LAN, email, MSN...and newest doesn't integrate into MS Office like the old one does. No more ability to stick the little notes to Word & Excel files.  :(

I think Stickies can do a good deal of that, and it's free.  You can set it so it pops up a note when certain windows open, for example.  So can the sticky notes feature built into PowerPro but I find it hard to use.
