Living Room / Re: Looking at an android tablet

1. Has anyone heard anything about the Chuwi?

http://www.amazon.co...p/product/B019RDTS58

Everything I've seen has been complimentary.. which makes me suspicious.

Where did you hear about it? I've never heard of Chuwi and I see no customer reviews at that link.

But while we're talking about questionable tablets, you can find a few tablets that run both Windows 10 and Android on Everbuying.net. Here's an example:

$79 - Onda V820W Windows 10 + Android 4.4 Tablet PC Intel Z3735F Quad Core 1.3GHz 8 inch WXGA IPS Screen 2GB RAM 32GB ROM Bluetooth 4.0

Chuwi appears to be just the seller name -- tablet is Onda, as in deo's link.

YNAB 5 Is Not For Me

his favourite alternative there was Moneydance, even says he's moving over to it.
Their website was very generic (uninformative), so I tried asking about security:
I was unable to find any info about privacy and/or the EULA - I'd like to know a bit about all that before trialing.
Especially relevant for online sync: how securely is that done?
(Considering the potential sensitivity of the data, I think this aspect should be given space in the website proper.)
-Question
Unlike Quicken or Mint, Moneydance does not store any of your financial data on our servers. If you are not using the mobile sync feature all of your financial data is stored locally on your computer. If you are using the mobile sync feature the data is synchronized using Dropbox. In order to use this you need to set up an account with Dropbox. You are then agreeing to the Privacy / EULA of Dropbox.

While Dropbox encrypts your data in transit and at rest they happen to hold the keys to decrypt it. For this reason Moneydance encrypts any data that writes to your dropbox account for mobile syncing. This encryption is end-to-end symmetric AES256. Only your mobile device and your local Moneydance installation have the keys.

512GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive Metal Swivel High Speed Memory Stick Thumb Pen Gifts
$13.66 & free shipping
[..]
I'm thinking of buying, and seeking opinions. The laptop I was given is about 10 years old, and only has USB 2.0 anyway, so it would be pointless to pay more for USB 3.0 or greater. I do wish to be warned if the offers may be bogus somehow, because a few years back there were bogus thumb drives being offered on ebay, but times change and the technology seems legit in this case.

it's hard to believe they're real at that price, but I dont know :-/
The negative reviews the seller gets are all related to SD cards that dont have the advertised space:
http://feedback.ebay...rkparms=negative_180
which would make me wary.

I suspect many people buy, see 512GB listed as size on PC and give positive feedback -- but AFAIK that can be 'fixed', and it's only when they run out of space @ 32GB or whatever, that they realise they've been conned.

The waiting frustrated me too much ;D, I'd advice to use the MCT, get it from here

I went for this today:
I got the same update-dialogue again -- then got a UAC prompt, then it all disappeared again.

Clicking on the 10 icon in the tray, I see the update-dialogue with no indication that anything is being downloaded. GWX using almost no resources.

I tried killing GWX and repeating the process, no change (cant see anything relevant in the task manager -- GWX remains gone).

Will try a reboot and see if anything 'evolves' ...

What software is available of this nature offered through donation coder. Thku for ur input

I dont think there's anything quite like that here (not sure what Stephen had in mind [howdy Stephen!]).

If you tell us what exactly you want to do -- and why you want to do it -- there are some experts here who would surely be able to advise.

The last time I bought a flash or 'thumb' drive, I remember paying one dollar per gig. I just found out I can get a 512gb for $14 with free shipping on ebay.

how about a link to same?

It may be trickling in using BITS, so look for a hidden folder named $Windows.~BT on the root of the C: drive. In there you should have a - (getting) rather large -  install.esd file in the (IIRC) sources folder.

I unhid system files -- there's no folder by that name.

^ Okay, decided to go for it. The Windows upgrade window/dialogue said the machine is okay.

I clicked on Start download now, upgrade later
I got a flash of this window (or something very similar) - but it immediately disappeared:

ScwK3.jpg

I not sure what happened.
  • Task Manager shows GWX running, using no CPU, and less than one MB ram
  • I'm pretty sure there's nothing being downloaded
  • Internet connection is working fine

So, I tried it again (I get the initial dialogue again), and got exactly the same result.

Any tips?
(I didnt get very far with online search)

One of the first movies that got me into Sci-Fi in a big way wasn't Star Wars - but the Last Starfighter.

thanks for that tip wraith

Any tips for upgrading to Windows 10 now?
=> upgrading from 8.1, I'm going try keeping programmes unless advised otherwise.
Yes: Check with the manufacturer of the computer if an upgrade to Windows 10 is supported.
In hindsight I found out why my upgrade adventures failed for my Lenovo Y580 laptop: Lenovo states that it is not possible to upgrade that specific model (and a few others) to Windows 10.

thanks Ath,
that knocks the idea on the head -- it's a Lenovo (n581) that is included in that list as not recommended. It doesnt clearly state why (that I could see), so I probably wont bother following up on it.

the only reason I ask is: The uploader has not made this video available in your country.
Sorry about that.

I think maybe those links 'donationcoders' no longer work? (I tried the skrommel link in Firefox and got a 403 Forbidden.)

But still doesnt look good if they blocked for no reason...

Following the link in this post (I had to add the link manually - please compare with source)
MouseMark - Press Ctrl+M to locate the mouse.

Using:
  • uBlock Origin version 1.5.1
  • PaleMoon 25.8.1 (x64)
I get the following warning:

uBlock Origin has prevented the following page from loading:

https://www.donation...om/Software/Skrommel

Because of the following filter

||donationcoders.com^
Found in: Malware domains

[Close this window]

Disable strict blocking for [www.dcmembers.com]

I'm not sure what's going on here, and unfortunately have no time to follow up on this (tomorrow neither).
Hopefully someone can follow up on it if necessary!

Oh, wait... Does this mean I can no longer buy a licence key for this one? It looks like I missed the YNAB 4 boat then  :(

Edit: or is this one still a legit way of buying it?

Agreed: ouch!!

(Still not sure are you looking for some method of modifying other peoples work, or some way for them to get a better end result.)

I have no training in this field but can say: the minimum that needs to be changed is --

  • obviously the background colours used :-/
  • make space between columns a little wider
  • text needs to be 'justified'
  • more paragraphs in text with slightly wider spacing between lines after paragraph

In my opinion, it would be very passable (for what it is) if those changes were made.
