I was surprised to receive a notification a day or two ago saying AMD had a driver update for me. I thought, "Wow! They updated their old, discontinued driver to support the Anniversary Update! Nice!"

I let it run its thing and then it told me it was running the latest version after all.

But it's not the next one (that one belongs to JennyB). I have tried to "Modify message", but still I don't understand why Jenny's picture is displayed twice!?

It is displayed twice because it displays it in the quote of her post, and you also have it attached to your post. Just modify your message and uncheck the attachment box to get rid of the second one.

Why is this noteworthy?

Just seem there would be a simple CTRL+L or some such to reach the login screen.

She can also press the Win+L hotkey to go to the lock/login screen. Different users can be selected from the bottom-left corner.

Are there any of these tiny computers that will run a significantly long time (say 24+ hours continuously) on a pair of AA batteries?

I think you'd need to buy/make your own power adapter to power it with AA batteries.

It might be better to buy/use one of those cell phone recharger battery things to power the device via USB. Considering those things can recharge a phone a few times on a single charge, I think it should power an SBC for a fairly significant time.

I've also noticed that maybe it has to do with the length of time the computer is sleeping. If I put it to sleep and wake it up immediately, it seems to work just fine in my tests. Sometimes when I put it to sleep and wake it up within about 8-9 hours it works just fine. But if I let it go closer to 12 hours before waking it up again, it seems to fail much more often.

That said, I have never properly logged any of the times or paid close enough attention to say for certain that this pattern is true. It's just what it "feels" or "seems" like to me when I experience it, because sometimes it works fine and other times it fails.

I've just started either leaving it on all night long or shutting it down completely at night, so I don't lose any work in the morning when I attempt to wake it from sleep.

I got the dreaded update 14393.222 which I've heard has had lots of reports of breaking things for many people. It all seemed to upgrade without any problems for me. And I've never had a problem with an update breaking/blocking DisplayFusion.

But yes, I was also miffed about not being able to select more than 12 hours as my "active" hours.

Does anyone have any experience with SpiderOak's Encryptr?

SpiderOak have a good reputation for their "Zero Knowledge" cloud solutions. Encryptr might be a pretty cool/useful thing to use. And it's free, too.

This looks really cool and I might give this a go myself. Did you already find a suitable monitor?

I'm not intending to do that project myself. It's just a cool and practical one I found online. :)

Your idea(s) sound pretty cool, too.

depending on the format of the data, you could do it using dropbox.

Or Google Drive. :)

Or whatever Google uses for their Google Play Services cloud sync.

She can also press the Win+L hotkey to go to the lock/login screen. Different users can be selected from the bottom-left corner.

Or for the local account she can use a simple password, and display the actual password in the password hint. This is obviously insecure if anyone else has access to her computer that she doesn't trust, but it is worth mentioning as a "workaround" to this issue.

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Blasteroids
« Last post by Deozaan on September 29, 2016, 05:46 PM »
So, after nearly 2 years since the last update, I just released a new version of Blasteroids.

The focus was on replacing the UI with something a bit better, as well as adding 4 new "cheat codes" to give the gameplay some variety.

Oh, and remember this logo I mocked up nearly 3 years ago?

If any artists want to be of service, I could use a logo/title image. The game is going to be called Blasteroids, and I thought it would be neat if the "o" was a spiral galaxy. Kind of like this:

I finally made it officially:

Itch.io Banner.png

Full changelog:

  • New “Cheat Codes” to vary play:
    • Bouncy Borders (bounce off edges of screen instead of wrapping to other side)
    • Never Miss (bullets don’t disappear until they hit an asteroid)
    • Rapid Fire
    • Tractor Beam (pull asteroids toward you when there are 10 or less on screen)
  • Added video settings (fullscreen or windowed at various resolutions)
  • New UI!
  • Asteroids now spawn in random positions instead of in predefined positions.
  • Game now accepts gamepad input for aiming/shooting.
  • Improved worldwrap to work correctly at lower framerates.
  • Preload some objects at beginning of game to improve spawn rate.
  • Cache some references instead of looking them up repeatedly.
  • Don’t count as two deaths if quitting while already dead.
  • Fixed World Wrap not updating after screen resize.
  • Tweetbot sends Tweets when achievements are unlocked.
  • Minor tweaks to various Tweets.
  • Other fixes and improvements.

I don't get what good the archive of the site is if the site is down and you can't contact them.  But I suppose I'm probably missing something...

I'm with you!

I didn't get the point of the PDF as an archival of the site, but I figured if we're making archives, why not use a major archiving service like archive.is?

This is not a rare occurrence with aging cartridges. Once they pass their recommended shelf life (~2-3 years), they become time bombs. And printing defects (spots, streaks, etc.) do not always occur prior to catastrophic failure...they can just go poof ... Like mine did.

That is good to know. Thanks.

Even still, a $60 toner cartridge every 2-3 years is much better than $30 ink cartridges every few months.
2092
The right way to handle the costs of this stuff is to factor everything in then assess the cost per page for your printed output over the life of the printer. If it's now the case, particularly at the consumer end, that the majority of the cost is in the ink cartridges then that just makes the calculation easier, surely?

I did that. Which is why I own a laser printer and not an ink printer.

I haven't replaced my toner cartridge for literally years, and it still prints away when I need it to. :-*
An ink cartridge would have dried up after a few months, whether I used it or not.

Wouldn't it be easier to do something like this?

I am an introvert, and it annoys me to no end when anyone says "you don't talk much."

If someone says that, or they tell me that I'm quiet, I see it as an attempt to get me to speak up, so I just smile and nod.

Living Room / Raspberry Pi (and other SBC) projects
« Last post by Deozaan on September 27, 2016, 03:39 PM »
The tech geek in my really likes the idea of SBCs like the Raspberry Pi and Odroid, but as cool as the tech is, I have been unable to come up with a real-world use for my Odroid-C1 I bought last year.

Lets use this thread to post about interesting projects that use these little computers, whether they are projects you are personally doing or just cool projects you found online. I'll start with this Smart Mirror:

The gist of it is to buy a 2-way mirror (Acrylic See-Through Mirror), build a frame and put a monitor/TV and SBC in it. Now you can see the time, weather, and latest headlines in your mirror.

I've never heard of Shareware on Sale until you mentioned it in this thread. I didn't berate you, I merely pointed out that your question was already answered. It seemed like an obvious answer to me, but I haven't tried installing anything from SoS before, so I may not be familiar with how it works.

I believe what Curt meant was that during the installation process you have a chance to click "No" or uncheck a box to install the crapware. That's typically how it works when crapware is bundled with installers. But again, I've never installed anything from Shareware on Sale, so I am not familiar with how their installation process works.

Either way, Curt says it is possible to install it without the crapware. So just be careful as you install and read thoroughly before you click "Next" or "OK" on the installer.

Living Room / Re: Yahoo! accounts hacked... two years ago!

Ugh...

I just went to change my Yahoo account password and used a password generator to generate a very long password. I entered it into the "new password" and "confirm password" fields and thought it looked a lot shorter than the one I generated.

It turns out that they truncate it to 32 characters without telling you.

Why are companies so inept at allowing people to use secure passwords?
